I know he went on that cosmic time trip, and maybe he learned something there that may soften him up a bit, but it's still weird.
I think it's a problem with the writing where we are expected to feel bad for the war crimes committed by characters, but then they happily gloss over it when they need to. Which is a shitty thing that's more frequent in kid cartoons, not adult ones.
