Mister Miracle by Tom King

Be honest, is this any good? Should I read Kirby's Fourth World before this?

You're a permissionfag nothing you do or don't do matters.

Tom King

Good

Such a wasteful thread.

I liked it.
I would recommend reading Jack Kirby's Fourth World and Grant Morrison's New Gods books (JLA Rock of Ages, Mister Miracle Seven Soldiers of Victory arc, Final Crisis) before reading Tom King's book.
Kirby's stuff is necessary to understand the characters, and King's take on Darkseid owes everything to what Morrison did with the character.

The main thing to know about it is that it's written firmly in the POV of Orion being a piece of shit and that Scott got fucked over by his dad and had his life stolen from him by Orion.

If you read any previous New Gods stuff, outside Cosmic Odyssey (the first New Gods work to portray Orion as an unlikable shit), you will have a massive contrast since more writers white knight Orion as a didn't do nothing and take the stance that Scott has to have his life ruined before it began so Orion could have the best in everything growing up so he could be bribed into siding with Highfather into fighting his bio dad

reading previous works will just broaden your understanding of why it's fucking garbage you shouldn't have bothered with

If you are absolutely intent on reading Kings utter shit take on the 4th world I would not recommend reading anything prior because knowing anything at all about the characters, or hell even a basic characterization ruins Kings take.

But if you want some actual good 4th world books I’d definitely recommend Jack Kirby’s stuff, the Orion ongoing by Siminson, and the Mister Miracle run by Dematteis

No, it’s not very good at all. In fact it’s quite bad. It bares zero resemblance to what Kirby wrote so even if you do read this dogshit you have no reason to read kirby’s work. But I’d say read that instead and never read anything king has written.

The way you phrase this seems to me like you didn’t actually read kirby’s work and seem to think Orion ever actually did anything even objectionable or that it was his choice to be handed over as a newborn. It just reeks of the type of cynicism and misery that king himself thrives off of.

I would recommend reading Jack Kirby's Fourth World and Grant Morrison's New Gods books (JLA Rock of Ages, Mister Miracle Seven Soldiers of Victory arc, Final Crisis)

Based. However I’d recommend doing anything else with their time, including jumping off a tall building, before:

reading Tom King's book.

I read along with the storytimes and didn't care for it, but there was a nugget of something that kept me reading. About halfway through I got a copy of the Kirby run, read it, and discovered that the thing I was responding to from the King book was all the stuff he had ripped from Kirby and used like a thin sheet to cover a lame and not very well told story.
If you have to read it, best to go in blind so that maybe you get a kick out of it. Then read some actual good comics and it will change your whole perspective. If such a phenomena had a name, it should be called "The Identity Crisis Effect".

Did he really write this because he had a mental breakdown from Drumpf getting elected?

No, he wrote it because he had a kid and he felt trapped in his marriage

Read Mad Men, Allred is the only guy who knows how to write about sixties heroes

It's decent, but it's more 90s than anything.

No. Yes.

Kirby is the only King in your post who's actually worth reading.
Get the fuck outta here with Tom.

Spoken like a newbie not familiar with New Gods fandom

NG fandom is pretty heavily split between those who love Orion/hate how Me Miracle historically upstaged and outsold Orion-centric NG books and those who hate Orion and point out how he stole Scott's life, how Highfather unpersoned Scott in favor of Orion, and where everyone excepts Scott to shut his mouth and never achieve got a raw deal and had to deal with Orion stealing his life/birthright and not appreciate it.

This was furthered by Jim Starlin who wrote Orion as an unredeemable piece of shit, so toxic and murderous that he is the only person who makes Superman snap and beat the living shit out of whenever he sees Orion. Which was furthered by Grant Morrison, who wrote Orion as a literal rabid dog who just wants to kills and demanded he join the JLA alongside Bards instead of Bards and Scott.Wwaw2t

I can't imagine the New God "fandom" is larger than you and like five other 70 year olds

It's really bad. How do you make a series about an escape artist with the moral of don't escape make the best of what you can

Tom King is a man who took "one must imagine Sisyphus happy" too seriously

Time for some honesty. Kirby's Fourth World is not a good comic. It's a clusterfuck and not Kirby's best art.
However, King's Mister Miracle is also not a good comic, so it's best that you avoid these characters altogether.

I wouldn't if I were you, but knock yourself out. You probably won't get much out of it unless you're a newbie.

Hot garbage.

King's work is typically best enjoyed by people with absolutely no prior history with the character so go ahead.

Sure.

Some experienced readers liked his stuff too, at first. Having read these early comics, I can ascribe it to either desperation or eternal bad taste.

There's also muppets for whom 'the geek shit' is their assumed 'identity'. Conspicuous consooomers, they have to 'rate' everything and fill the air with their insecure copypasta babble.

Time for some honesty. Kirby's Fourth World is not a good comic

You’re right, it’s three spectacular comics.

King books are rarely actually about the character and setting, they're usually just stapled on to the latest version of the same story about war and ptsd he's been telling for a decade

Be honest, is this any good? Should I read Kirby's Fourth World before this?

it's awful and gets almost everything about the characters wrong down to the instigating premise that scott would ever kill himself

I think OP's question is pretty well answered by now. I'm curious tho what's the consensus here on Morrison's take on the 4th world? Cause I don't like it, but I hate Morrison so I'm biased.

I didn’t care for it either I found Final Crisis confusing and hard to follow and his take on real people with the souls of the 4th World Gods was mediocre at best

It's meh.

Mediocre, like all of King's best.

Final Crisis is basically gobbledegook but his Mister Miracle is good and his overall interpretation of Darkseid and Anti-Life is good.

This.

It's four hot garbage comics.

Alright.

Fuck off.

no

Awesome if you can follow it. It's not really for everybody, unfortunately.
