Let's talk about really old things!
Pre 1960's Anon Babble
Like your mom
Fleischer superman looks gorgeous!
muh boomer sacred cows
Nostalgia is covert racism. Being made by white men is not a prerequisite for something being good.
warning: very scary. very spooky.
I liked the old Popeye shorts
Skeleton Dance will be public domain in 2 months.
Christ that background looks like a 3D model. Those artists were downright mad.
The reflections in the floor and the animation of the cat tumbling around is great
Yantra - James Whitney (1957)
Don't watch if you cant stand flashing colours
when you love your work
Look at the way the bird's chick hatches and grows up
Cinderella
I've been reading through Tales of Suspense
A lot of these stories are "Oh, if we hadn't judged that horrific monster by it's looks and approached it with violence, it would've gifted us immortality and advanced science". A bunch of these stories have twist endings, some are repetitive but most are neat. A recent one that comes to mind is a story where a superstitious crook breaks a mirror and tries to live a life free of crime else me might die, then on his first crime afterwards he breaks another mirror and gets caught by the police, earning himself 7 years of bad luck in the form of a seven year prison sentence
I like the artists work a lot, they have really neat designs for monsters and robots. I've seen over 4 different takes on Martians so far. If I were around back then I'd definitely be picking these up.
I'm noticing a rise in stories about commies
"Oh, if we hadn't judged that horrific monster by it's looks and approached it with violence, it would've gifted us immortality and advanced science"
Does anyone know if there was anything happening culturally in those years (1959 to 1968) that would be making those storylines popular?
It's on the tip of my tongue
oh, the space race! of course!
Tintin went to the moon in the 50's!
One of the greatest looking cartoons ever made. It even inspired Tezuka a lot. Without Fleischer anime would not be as big as it is now.
How can you even profit off the public domain Superman shorts when the character himself isn't in public domain?
Comics sure did love their space RACE stories, it was a very hot topic!
The civil rights movement as well!
It's really interesting to see those pages and how multiple factors in the cultural atmosphere influenced the stories.
Star Trek began around this time too, in 1966.
How did they do that background? It's so incredibly smooth and naturalistic that I'm wondering if they rotoscoped it over some footage taken using a dolly.
It's almost funny that a story as blunt with its allegory as Judgement Day was still met with the publisher going "oh gee um golly can you not make astronaut one of them negros though"
Sing-along-song about getting blitzed on hooch
They're alright, those old-timers
youtube.com
they're done by companies too small potatoes to be worth sueing. If Disney or Viacom put out a Superman shorts disc or put them on their streaming service it'd be a different story.
The baby animals are drinking the hooch!
In 1935, Disney's Three Orphan Kittens caught Oscars' eyes, with a combination of skilful characterization, and new concepts in perspective and movement. In this scene, an effect that animators call a "moving vanishing point" creates a unique sense of depth and action.
My impression is that it's calculated drawings and multiplane, but I guess I don't know for sure.
It's a partial Anon Babble since it's live action mixed with stop motion, but I found out there's a 1949 Alice in Wonderland film!
I like to think that all the big companies have a "gentleman's agreement" not to dabble with public domain. Because they know their shit will be next one day.
Sleeping Beauty is still one of the most beautiful (heh) animated films ever made
radio show superman is pretty fun background noise.
Space race
post-EC Comics world (even though the CCA was in place, Marvel was still doing sort-of EC stories, but toned down)
Twilight Zone
Back in the day they used to sell VHS and DVDs of the Superman shorts. If you look closely at them you can tell which ones were by WB and which ones weren't.
Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are so old. What do you think will happen on their 100th anniversary?
I will show them how it feels to be a tree in a man's world
