To avoid the "damsel in distress" trope criticisms, duh. And probably because they thought it would make a more interesting character if she was the mentor/active romantic lead with Mario than just being a figure he needs to rescue. The real storytelling sins here are
- In doing this, they forced Luigi into that uninteresting role for over half the movie. The brother dynamic set up in the first act is truncated, and half the "Mario Bros" team gets almost no development until he's in the finale, without even the need to go through any training that Mario did
- Love interest/more competent action female who teaches the everyman hero about a whole new world isn't fresh, it was already satirized with Wyldstyle in another animated movie Pratt himself starred in.
- Damsel in distress creating a passive character is a solved issue, essentially. George Lucas's storytelling skills aren't beyond criticism, and yet he figured it out in 1997, the Princess gets rescued partway through the story, gets a chance to play a part on the team, and the central conflict continues past this point because of some large threat, which the Mario movie already has in the form of the Invincibility Star, but still couldn't figure out how to use their core cast effectively.
Some people think this movie is a basically competent kids film, but it really isn't in terms of story structure or really any other part of writing. It's a pretty sloppily made adventure that got away with it on brand recognition, color and vibrancy, a stacked cast, and a bunch of references fans would get.

As somebody who hasn't otherwise been into Sonic, I have no idea how old he's supposed to be in the movies. He has his own room with comics, and he gets grounded, but he's also, you know, a hero who saves people and travels around the world blowing up buildings. Watching the first movie I thought he was supposed to be like 25 in human years and thought of Tom as his buddy until he gets adopted at the end (spoilers) and suddenly he's a "kid" and Tom is more like his dad. It's even weirder with Knuckles because he sounds like Idris Elba and doesn't do kiddy things like read comics, but he gets grounded too in the Wade series.
