From what I remember, Mike's earliest incarnation was supposed to be a lovable dumbass. Of course back then he was also supposed to be colored yellow. But, honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing a happy broken-brained Mike who no longer gives a fuck. If it makes David redundant, so much the better.

This was completely predictable. James and the track team always had to be a trap because nothing good ever happens to Mike.

I don't think Taeshi would allow Mike to escape her torment so easily. His death is surely a good long ways down the road.

This anon is probably right, given the chapter's title. Mike will almost certainly find himself ignored in favor of the new star of the track team, David, who Mike cannot beat no matter how hard he tries. Gray cat failing at the thing he's always been best at is yet one more way that Taeshi can inflict suffering. The chapter description also struggling against the pain is Mike's status quo going forward.

They didn't get much of a showing once Lucy left because Mike went generally out of focus until she returned. After that, most advantages were nullified. His god reflexes never came into play during the dodgeball game with Lucy, his stupid good hearing was only used to hurt him, and his speed advantage is negated by David's meme power.

1. Underline the theme of Lucy's abuse early on rather than play it for comedy. Same with the friend group taking Mike for granted. I liked the more serious volume 1 arcs for what they were so those can stay mostly unchanged.

2. Condense Lucy's suffering arc as it really dragged by the end. Lucy does not leave Roseville so probably no suicide attempt either, or at least she bungles it so hard that nothing comes if it. Mike's apology accelerates her mental health spiral because she has a chance to fix things between them but has no idea how to do that without fucking it all up again. She alternates between annoying and surprising Mike and eventually suffers a very public breakdown. The friend group sides with her over Mike, who semi-voluntarily leaves the table. His feelings remain conflicted.

3. Sandy isn't devolved into a vapid whore, but it does become apparent that she's being forced to grow up too fast with a flawed idea of what that means. When her job gets a little too stressful, Sandy takes a break and stays in Roseville for a while. Since Mike no longer has to be her emotional support pillar, it becomes apparent how little they have in common. Eventually the two realize that she's treating him as more of a pet or a project than a proper boyfriend but don't know what to do about it. Sandy sympathizes with Lucy but finds her extremely frustrating to deal with.

Ftfy, Lucy cannot function on her own canonically. She went from Mike to Paulo to Augustus. She needs her emotional teddy bear and Paulo was a shit one & one she cannot stand for long periods of time, Mike was done with her and Augustus is now her lovely emo guard dog. Someone actually has to be be present or Lucy would kill herself, Taeshi even backed this up with having Lucy splat herself in the first place and having Augustus watching out for her.

I really, really want to see Augustus get sick of Lucy's antics. He's taken Mike's place in her life, so it's only fitting she drives him down a similar path.

Don't forget after that and saying out loud how she'd rather try and kill herself again rather than seeing Mike she told him "I never wanted to see you suffer, why would you think I wanted that?"

This kind of shit is why some self-reflection from Lucy would be so very satisfying. It gets tiresome how no one ever holds her to account for longer than five seconds, then immediately gets back to patting her ass. She'll keep deluding herself until someone else shoves the truth into her face.

Best case scenario would be David having meme speed, but also meme autism so he gets kicked off the team cause he can't actually follow instructions.
