I was rewatching this show & it used to be peak in its early seasons. Why the fuck did the writing go so downhill? The characters in the later seasons are so mischaracterized bros. The pink diamond is actually rose quartz contradictory bullshit reveal ruined the entire plot and bastardized characters like Pearl. And WTF happened to Peridot??? She was brilliant with her only flaw being social cues and they made her just generally dumb later on. Holy shit. It's like rewatching the good seasons really highlights the flaws in the later ones. Lapis (my goat) also had SO much potential but she was sidelined before she could even get any fucking screentime. Her entire "arc" happened off screen and she was just a huge missed opportunity.
Steven Universe thread
It was good all the way through, you just expected too much
bastardized characters like Pearl.
It didn't?
Her being born a slave and realizing that she was mentally slave even when she was with Rose was her whole character arc.
Rebecca let Lauren Zuke cook. That’s what happened. She made Lapis a deadpan bitch. The show only improved once she left. The Movie and Future were good.
All of the show was good.
Kys slop apologist
tranny show
the show about a character who slowly changes from a giant space woman to a teenage boy is about trannies
Woah anon nothing gets past you.
Guys, im gonna be real. Steven should have ended up with Peridot. Hell, I'd even settle for Lapis
tranny board desu take it or leave it
I wish they didn't make Lapis such a bitch and had her grow more as a person, she regressed so much and tried pull everyone down to her level. I sometimes felt bad that Peridot had to deal with her unnecessary bullshit.
Also, Jasper felt like an aimless character, and they had absolutely no idea what to do with her, before and after her corruption.
Bismuth was a pretty cool character, I liked the synth guitar motif that played almost everytime she appeared on-screen.
And also; White Diamond was the biggest waste of a potential villain that this show ever had. All the hype she ever had, that she had for years before her existence was fully known or understood, that went down the drain in the same episode she was introduced in. Omegafail on the crewniverse's part.
I honestly miss looking forward to new seasons. The show's biggest issue was the obvious quota of episodic townie hijinks that they were obligated to fill which hurt pacing and used up time that could have been spent developing the plot people actually found interesting. But I don't think they're as bad on a rewatch as I remember them to be, simply because we don't have to wait a regular eight month hiatus for them now (or you know, we can skip them).
Still enjoyed all of the actual gems.
The Movie and Future
Good
Exactly what I was trying to say. White diamond was super disappointing, Jasper was never explored thoroughly and had no direction in the story, and Lapis was wasted so hard its painful. I rewatched her introduction episode and it was done flawlessly. It's so hard going from seasons 1-3 and then suddenly being slapped in the face with neon steven universe lol
bastardized characters like Pearl
That's how you know is bait
Admittedly, it did feel like there was ideas for the future that were planted in season 1 and 2 that never came to fruition due to changes.
There are obvious ones like a confrontation between Bismuth and Lapis, the Crystal Heart, Rose's armory, etc. And there was the recent revelation about Pearl and Greg.
So it makes me wonder if Sugar had a bunch of other ideas she was planting that she never got to and we don't even know about it. Any kind of stuff that most of the audience would be shocked by.
She was one of the least bastardized characters, they don’t know what they talking
They were
creativity flows better when the pressure of many eyes and expectations aren't on you
parts of it were still really good throughout, just different. steven grew and learned and things stopped being magical and mysterious
and some scenes (like WD yanking his gem out) are among the best in the series
cartoon writers especially these days have to use their best material as soon as they can because there's never a guarantee of continuation
And either they didn't have much in mind for lapis beyond her villain of the week intro, nor much for peridot beyond her redemption arc, and/or they wanted to troll/disappoint the fans they saw as shallow for obsessing over them because of their looks, and maybe to spite zuke who sounded like she had it out for sugar
I really feel like Lapis and Peridot had specific trajectories in mind, but someone insisted on them being cute and funny, and as you already pointed out, they become more of a joke rather than integral parts of the story.
People can't handle how mature future was and how Spinel won Ms. Anon Babble
How? She was introduced as a renengade Pearl and the first and only Pearl who was able to find the willpower to disobey orders from the gem she was assigned to. Then it was revealed that she actually never had this ability and she was still just following her Diamond's orders the entire time. Bastardized.
it's not often that shows peak midway through the first season
The movie was a good time
Steven definitely had better chemistry with Peridot, than Lapis with Peridot, which is fucked up when a crew member was attempting to force Lapidot into the show.
Lapis and Peridot came across more as roommates than romantically interested in one another, having blip moments of affection, with the rest being filled with tension and awkwardness that make you wince.
I do wonder what would've happened if Connie was never introduced and Steven happened to get with one of the gems instead.
My whole running joke about Lapis have unrequited love for Steven stems from how Lapis seemed very kind and almost subservient to Steven at times. Like she viewed him as her new Diamond. But this wasn't really explored. So I just make fun of it.
That someone was Lauren fucking Zuke.
Townie episodes made perfect sense in a universe where the show continued doing ~50 episodes a season, airing twice a week. A little slice of ginger to cleanse the palate between 2-4 week runs of action, drama, or lore-heavy episodes as the show steadily raised the stakes.
But in a universe where they were doing bombs and having 4-6 month hiatuses between small batches of episodes and you'd get like half townie episodes and then another 4-6 month wait, it was fucking retarded.
How? She was introduced as a renengade Pearl and the first and only Pearl who was able to find the willpower to disobey orders from the gem she was assigned to.
You didn't watch the show. It had been evident since season one.
It was implied she had a hard-on for Rose, not that she was her literal slave.
*it had been evident since season one this wasn't the case, I mean
Better than So The Drama
The songs were alright, but the movie's ending was subpar, and Steven and Greg fusing was really creepy and creates a lot of unfortunate implications.
Future felt like an unnecessary epilogue that could've been told just as well, if not better through a comic series.
She was not a slave to Rose, she was a slave to her gem role. The renegade thing was simply Rose giving her a different task. At her core she was still the same and deeply struggling with it.
Weirdly the show had plenty of comics but it was mostly just slice of life stuff
Yeah, the first marathon leading up to the big season finale was fun, but making it the way that the entire show was released just hurt things. Hurt fan discussion, and hurt the reception to what would have just been average filler episodes.
I remember all the constant hiatuses that occurred. It was honestly frustrating as hell to watch it as it aired sometimes. The show would constantly go several months without a new episode.
Only gripe I had with the ending of the movie was Spinel leaving Earth
Peak emotional lapidot was when they weren't even interacting
Lapis the teardrop gem is best used sad and wet
They weren't going to be used as integral parts of the story even if Zuke wasn't memeing them up. Sugar didn't care about them
Real shit anon
I feel like that shit only intensified the unfulfilled hype that occurred.
She should've become a crystal gem, and she definitely would've been, had Pink not left her behind in the garden.
The Movie was pretty good, but Future sucked.
Can anyone explain why the animation was so shit later on? The season 1 animation felt so vibrant initially.
Also I think it was just crewniverse cannot do serialization lmao. s1 was amazing because it was a slice of life monster of the week show with occasional continuity, the best kind.
s2 was fine because the period plot was good, but even then the cracks were showing. like how the cluster wasnt treated with any sort of agency, or ametheyst just throwing away peridot's limb enhancers, or steven automatically taking garnet's side when she smashes the control room over peridot being mean and threatening her.
also perfect steven would've been an amazing concept.
Why did they always give her the most memeable facial expressions?
lapis flapis
has the perfect fucking sword his mom left behind
gives it to his girlfriend, never uses it
even when he gets caught in a bunch of situations where it would benefit and connie isn't present
even when bismuth states it can poof any gem without damaging their gem
What did he mean by this? is he retarded?
and Steven and Greg fusing was really creepy
I watched the movie with my 10 year old niece and even she said that lol. I just explained it as Steven and Greg combining their desire to help Pearl, while avoiding agreeing with her because then I would have to explain why
Maybe if they made more of a humorous, cartoonish looking hippie/rockstar guy instead of a very detailed middle aged man you could see performing at a seedy bar
Yes, and no, he's a pacifist to the extreme. He'd cry if he accidentally killed a fly by stepping on it, then proceed to revive it using the same abilities he used on Lars.
If he wasn't the kind of person he was, he would've learned how to sword fight a long time ago instead of just relying on his ball, shield, and other magical abilities.
Steven Trooniverse was dogshit from day one.
I wonder how this show stayed afloat despite not trying at all to appeal to 6-11 year old boys in the later seasons.
I don't think boys can't like drama or romance or deep themes but boys love action and s1 had a lot of it.
Would it be cliche to say that the audience grew up alongside it?
The Connie/Steven relationship is the karmic healing of the Pearl/RQ relationship. Rose/Steven has a knight again, but this time it's going to be an equal, an other half. Like a fusion of pearlrose and gregrose.
Steven will let her do things for him, while he does things for her.
Steven's strong desire for total and extreme pacifism is probably also a genetic/karmic consequence of Rose's massive guilt. She never wanted to hurt anybody ever again.
And yadda yadda fusion. In a series that emphasizes how people can complete each other, it's only fitting that the MC has someone with a purpose that fits with him like a puzzle piece.
And can you really see stocky Steven using a sword to it's full potential? He's a DEF guy, technical swordplay is best used with someone more built for agility.
Sure he got super speed in the epilogue but that's literal post-series hax
Cartoons stopped being made for that demographic a long time ago.
lapiz
peridot
internal shitshow between sugar and her production team involving un severely unstable person getting fired
mischaracterized
sugar did not win the wrestling contest with CN, who more or less forced her out of her intended show into a retarded compromise
bastardized characters like pearl
sugar also did not win the wrestling match with neither the fans nor the produciton team who both wanted different things for the characters
personal relationships between many characters were actually intended to crash and burn hard, and some ships that would horrify other characters were meant to happen ie gregxpearl. Sugar wanted something more in line with her old comics but ran into the same problem dana terrace did, even worse because unlike dana even the fandom was against sugar.
tl;dr sugar was not a good showrunner and it affected the end product visibly.
Boys keep going into STEM instead of the arts
ships that would horrify other characters were meant to happen ie gregxpearl
You might be retarded
I really miss a lot of the early season 2 theorycraft after Yellow Diamond got namedropped, or even going into the teasers when we saw Jasper for the first time.
I think that's one of the best periods of any show, the early season 1/2 theorycraft. It was the best part of the old Adventure Time threads, it was the best part of the old Gravity Falls threads. It's always the best part of all a show's early-season talkbacks.
absolutely nobody would have tolerated that ship during the show's airing.
Because it had never been intended to happen. Its pure schizophrenia.
I don't think boys can't like drama or romance or deep themes
Really? I think they can, they just don't like when shit gets too cringe and gay, ie the crossdressing Steven episode
I think SU has a lot of general human/family themes that can reach anybody, but it should have been aimed more towards teenagers, and they sabotaged their efforts to make universally accessible stories and themes by going too far with the cringe gay online pride parade shit at times
You haven't watched the movie, future or seen the latest SU pieces by drawn by sugar I pressume.
you're complaining about a boy wearing a dress in a show where half the female cast are lesbians
I'm sorry but lesbians remain much, much less offputting than boys in dresses, especially to boys
i suppose that's a good way of looking at it. people rag on connverse but unlike regular show or adventure time it was just a simple childhood friends romance that (outside of the beginning of season 5) wasn't drama-filled for the sake of it.
giving boys restrictions on what they can and can't do isn't a very manly lesson.
it's no better than those moms who thought rock and roll or pokemon or harry potter would corrupt their sons.
This. Boys should crossdress; SU gave me the courage to do that in my later years
I wonder how the Uncle Grandpa crossover would've gone if Spinel had existed then. Moreso I'm curious what their interaction would be like.
While all the adults and aliens were either threatening or dropping weight after weight on Steven's shoulders, Connie was his reprieve to embrace being a kid and a puppy love dweeb.
Until their first teen hormoned spat, but that's humanity for ya
I'm sorry but if no restrictions lead to some boys filling my kids with nut, and consequently, my town's prisons in the future, then I think drawing a line or two shouldn't be out of the question, just look at the anon three posts above me, he already fell for the fag psyop, he'll be on the news for all the wrong reasons as a result in no time
You have to be smoking or either got sugars cunt in your mouth to think that this show was perfect. S4 will and forever will be shit and one of the reasons for SU having so much lost potential, you faggot
what are you even saying
how is wearing a dress gonna lead to any of that
no
I do not approve of restrictions anon, I know lgbt inclinations are felt early regardless of what a kid is told, and if they want to seek overt gender mixing media, they should be allowed.
But I also know many if not most boys are proud to be boys, and want to fit in with other boys, and that kinda shit alienates them. Even if they want to reject fitting in, the age group SU is meant for is probably too early for that kind of independent defiance.
Which is a shame because again, there's a lot about SU that speaks to the general human and emotional condition, family relationships and the reasons adults seem sad and angry, and cultivates empathy between the genders. Which is what Sugar was probably aiming for when she said the show was about "intersectional feminism".
So you do agree. I understand boys fear alienation but there's literally no way things will get better unless we change. Girls can like whatever the hell they want and wear whatever they want but boys still get called fags for wearing pink.
But true. SU's best moments were in the quieter scenes where characters just talked

So you do agree. I understand boys fear alienation but there's literally no way things will get better unless we change. Girls can like whatever the hell they want and wear whatever they want but boys still get called fags for wearing pink.
We need to show boys being feminine isn't a bad thing. They should be allowed to wear make up and like pink and play with dolls.
You just sound like your masculinity is threatened
Girls can like whatever the hell they want
They really can't.
and wear whatever they want
lol
I think "is Rose a good character" is the hardest media comprehension check in Anon Babble history
The correct answer is "yes: her character development is just told in reverse order"
I think Iroh did it better kind of
That's probably true, but he's also a fairly different character. Iroh is a character who learned the right lessons and became a wizened mentor, while Rose never got over all her problems and died unsatisfied
Wow Dipper is going to be sending him to cuckshed
Rose is a good character, she is just a bad person.
You make it sound like she's evil.
She isn't, just selfish to the extreme. Although that's probably by design. That's sort of what pink diamond is supposed to be, I assume.
"Boys things" are usually neutral, universally useful and comfortable while "girl's things" are usually specialized niches, customizations, decorations, derivative.. it goes back to the myths we made like Eve being made from Adam's ribs.. girls doing "boyish" things is usually just relieving themselves of frills, while boys doing "girlish" things is usually putting on frills...
I'm all for freedom of frillification and for boys to stop wanting to beat or kill each other for being different, but if you want to reach them it's counterproductive to lump them in with what they're still struggling to understand/accept. At least have the crossdressing be a side character instead of the MC
Yeah. Steven listened to and navigated a lot of emotional landscapes, exploring parts of the soul and things usually only the feminine are permitted to explore freely, and found solutions that takes a strength of character that anybody can aspire to
I'd say bad in her case means bad as in having counterproductive qualities to their goals and their communities. She's not evil because she didn't wish for or consciously work towards bad things and suffering of others, but she never developed the skill to fully think of the consequences of her actions or how they will affect others until it was too late.
The first time she realized how her actions affect others - when she saw life on earth - it consumed her, and contradictorily became a selfish desire, because she placed earth and her war's needs above gemkinds.
It's kind of like that circles of empathy chart that gets circulated in left vs. right political shitflinging - she started out only having empathy for herself, then her planet and it's creatures, then - with garnet - gems, especially those that don't fit in; and then after the corruption took gems of both sides she probably felt bad for all life she roped in - and then she died, to make a kid whose empathy would expand to the whole Universe
In other words, bad in her case means faulty and underdeveloped.. And I forgot, Pink Pearl would be the first time she realized how her actions affect others - which is why the fate of Earth, a whole bunch of new friends under her new responsibility, consumed her
you only get called a fag if you're a dyel. lifters can wear anything they want and look good.
steven universe was never “peak” it was always tranny faggot crap.
Steven Universe is the Sonic 06 of cartoons
this series had so much potential but it was wasted
