Which one inflicted more long-lasting damage on the entire superhero genre?
Which one inflicted more long-lasting damage on the entire superhero genre?
Neither? Bronze Age was already dark
Damage? Neither. The damage came from comics following these. If you want to blame these comics for coming before those, then you might as well blame the ones that came before these.
IYKYK
Watchmen. TDKR did no damage whatsoever.
I actually started reading some OG Dick Tracy and Spirit and I'm genuinely surprised how much more elaborated and well written it was. Specially compared to golden- silver age capeshit
If TDKR did absolutely no damage, then neither did Watchmen.
Nonsense. That's a complete logical non-sequitur.
Your original post is nonsense.
Don't be too surprised, newspaper strips were the big leagues. Written for the widest audience, including adults. They were a medium with national attention on the most popular strips
Comic books were basically sweatshop labor cranked out with little care on the publisher's sake of the quality. The comic book characters we know now are basically the equivalent of the million monkeys and Shakespeare- we remember the stuff that had some semblance of quality- but it's a relatively small percentage compared to how much material was cranked out in the 30's-40's.
Dark Knight Returns. It was more popular and had many more imitators compared to Watchmen.
The answer is Secret Wars. It's started cross-overs and tie-in events.
BP.
I think people certainly wanted to write Watchmen, but most come off as weak attempts at recapturing DKR without the artistry.
Watchmen and its not even close
The Dark Knight gave us Batgod AKA a Batman capable of defeating Superman. He also made Superman a government stooge.
That had a lasting impact and perceptibility of both characters. Negatively IMO.
One has to wonder what kind of impact Dark Knight would have had if the story hadn't gotten away from him (his words) and he went with his original ending of Batman being gunned down in Crime Alley by the cops.
his original ending of Batman being gunned down in Crime Alley by the cops.
This would've been kino
While the periodic 'old superhero coming out of retirement in a dystopian future' can be extremely unimaginative and derivative they aren't nearly as prevalent as Watchmen copycats proliferating and derailing the whole industry with hack writing
Here's a better question: if these are the #1 and #2 best superhero comics, which ones are #3, 4, and 5?
Watchmen is pretentious subversionslop that was hilariously proven wrong immediately after it came out, yet people still clone it. What damage did TDKR do? Make capes more Popular? They were already on top of the world thanks to radio long before it.
Keith Giffen
It's amazing how every single part of your post is wrong.
Year One, then a power gap Kingdom Come and All-Star Superman or, historically, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee's Fantastic Four(more for concept than outright writing)
t was hilariously proven wrong immediately after it came out,
heh you know the cold war ackshually didn't end up in war, Watchmen is bullshit!
DKR is a great story on it's own but we owe the 'old hero comes back in shithole future' stream of slop to it, look how just today some old Daredevil in the future story came out that will have zero impact when it's over. The only successful derivative was Last Ronin.
Old Man Logan. Also "Last Days" type stories like All-Star Superman.
Watchmen led to half of Grant Morrison's career and DC: New Frontier.
Also "Last Days" type stories like All-Star Superman.
Arguably All Star Superman's more influenced by the Silver Age Death of Superman (not the 90s one, but the 1961 by Jerry Siegel and Curt Swan) and Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow moreso than DKR
Year One and All-Star are good, but KC is not on the same level.
Kingdom Come
lmao
no
All I know is that Pic Related is the superior deconstruction
was it Nirvanna or everyone who tried to imitate Nirvanna for ruining music and grunge in the 90's?
I fucking hate people like you.
This meme ran its course. It's time to lay it to rest.
my bad, posted the wrong deconstruct
Not as good as either Watchmen or TDKR.
meme
You really are unaware of how respected Mark Gruenwald was by the monthly comic crown.
Why blame the trailblazers for every bad imitator?
How?
It would've been neat. Like a meta way of saying Gotham no longer needs Batman, which is what Bruce wants. Its actually a win for him.
But I like my Batgod kino
Watchmen was FAR more influential in the long term.
The only part of his post that's wrong is the radio part. The rest of it is objectively 100% true.
Nothing in this post happened.
It's hilarious that you fags think All Star Superman is better than Kingdom Come.
It's 100% false.
I know it's better than Kingdom Come.
a Batman capable of defeating Superman
and he wrote how that would work, he needed help from Oliver and Carrie and had to wear a specially made suit. Batman knew he couldn't really fight Superman 1 on 1 but he also knew Superman would hold back
He also made Superman a government stooge
and the book makes it clear Superman does it begrudgingly because he was the only thing keeping us from really going to war with the Soviet Union. There are actually a lot of great moments that show what Superman represents and you're supposed to see Bruce as kind of delusional when he's talking shit. Hell Bruce only gets his way BECAUSE Clark didn't try to rat him out when he could hear Bruce's heartbeat
7/10 got me to reply, really proving that retards didn't understand TDKR
