Alternate timeline: John K. never got fired from Ren & Stimpy

The documentary I watched is called "happy happy joy joy", it's free on tubi, and they actually have John HIMSELF show up and by the end of it all he announces that he's retired from animation (not willingly)... The basic sentiment from everyone regarding the guy was that he's a brilliant man... BUT... he's kind of a nut. If he stilll HAD a platform today I doubt we'd have the documentary in the first place.

Ren and Stimpy is a property that exemplifies how much of a collaborative effort animation (and entertainment in general) truly is.
The games episodes showed what it's like without John/Waller and APC showed what it's like without Bob Camp and Billy West
Then the reboot came and showed what it's like without any of them (minus Billy, who can barely do the voices anymore)
It's kinda tragic what became of the show, hopefully they'll just lay it to rest at this point

It was gonna happen at some point. John thought his firing was the death of cartoonist driven animation in the industry since nicktoons was meant to be creator driven. After he was fired, nickelodeon took over the entire production which kind of defeated the purpose of a creator driven cartoon so I guess I can see Johns perspective. After spumco got booted, the show started to suck.

There are only 3 half hours of the show per year and they cost as much as 20 half hours of Rugrats, at minimum. The show ultimately gets punted from cable and becomes a direct to video series, then cancelled when the VHS tapes don't make 30 million in profit each.

Animation already has plenty of Dan Schneider type foot fetishists. Just take a look at Tangled and how blatant all the Rapunzel foot scenes were.

Even random shows like Steven Universe sometimes randomly come out with oddly detailed foot scenes like pic-related that makes you wonder if maybe the animators enjoyed drawing those feet a little too much.

That being said John K does not seem like a footfag. Naked Beach Frenzy is him being unabashedly horny and I don't recall any scenes like pic-related. And if you want to attach a weird fetish to attach to him than look at all the constant fart jokes he was putting in his shows, but as for feet nothing stands out.

John's wilder ideas are only funny when tempered through a children's show format. It's funny because of pushing the boundaries of what he can get away with. This would require John being willing to compromise and not constantly go over budget. Granted, R&S should've been an MTV show to begin with, it got better ratings there and censorship would be far less of an issue.

John was also his own best hype man. He was probably a lot of peoples' first introduction to analysis when it came to art/design theory. He posted about various topics on his blog and a lot of people got the wrongful impression that these were his original concepts and that he was some sort of mega-genius. Furthermore, he seemed to never pass up the opportunity to shit on everything else, so people who couldn't see through his bullshit took that to mean that he knew better than everyone else.

In reality, he stalled at "has great potential" and was never really able to go beyond that because he was unable to perform the basic duties of his position. Nobody gives a shit how "brilliant" you are if you can't deliver on time, under budget, and you suck to work with.

And for the John K fanboys who want to proclaim that "real art" takes time and all that, what the fuck has John done since then? He's had 30 years and has yet to produce a great masterwork. John needs structure and discipline because he grew up with a very strict father. Bakshi fulfilled that role for awhile, but then John struck out on his own. Nickelodeon decided it wasn't their job to be his daddy, so they let him go. Without some serious therapy, John was never going to be able to be the head boss.

John had told stories about how he and his friends would bring girls around and his dad would swoop in and "steal" their attention and show off how many pushups he could do etc, and essentially emasculated all of them.
Fast forward and Robyn Byrd told the story of how the first night she was at John's house, he took off his shirt and made her watch him do pushups in the garage.
John both suffered at the hands of his dad, but ended up becoming the same overbearing, overly critical asshole to other people as he aged.

The question isn't how would things be different if John wasn't fired from Ren & Stimpy. The question should be how would things be different if John actually committed to going to therapy and doing the work?
