Was he a hack?

Was he a hack?

Define "hack"?

One hit wonder.

He means well but he can't direct or lead a crew. Butch and Seth collaboratively carried the first season of JB's writing

using season 2 suzy in the image

He wasn't a hack. Season 1 was great. But seasons 2 and 3 were great and equally good to season 1, and some people prefer those.

Genius, at least when it comes to Chad characters

He probably grew up on those Scooby doo cartoons where they had a guest celebrity of the week or someone like Batman, go easy on his seasons

Not the same

I liked all eras of Johnny Bravo
every season had good episodes and Bravo was always funny

Just because he doesn't make a name for himself or have a billion shows under his belt doesn't mean he's a hack or a failure. There's dozens of people who were very successful whose names you would never recognize
Butch and Van are actually friends AFAIK
I assume Seth would be too if he still was interested in cartoons

This, both the Partible and Tingblad seasons were good for different reasons. And despite being the weakest one season 4 still had kino episodes like the Run Lola Run parody.

Carl is also in that image

even though Van didn’t create him

Run Lola Run parody

What kid would get that reference?

The same kid who would get Donny Osmond's appearances in the Partible seasons and Tingblad's Some Like It Hot parody.

or the multiple twilight zone references

Yes but what's the joke/movie or what?

No he's a based Hispanic artist. He's got great designs, sucks he isn't doing anything really anymore.

He was like 25 at the time he was fired. And at the time he was hired, creator-driven series were still new and Cartoon Network was just starting to experiment with original content.
Van had passion and skill but got caught up in an industry he just wasn't ready for at the time, but he learned and improved and put in the time necessary to get him back to his show. People shit on Johnny Bravo season 4 but it's really not that bad. If anything Van is the furthest thing from a "hack", he's one of those people who learned the hard way that the industry is unforgiving and bettered himself, which is more than I can say about some creators.

Hispanic

I thought he was asian?

The Philippines is apart of Hispania. They've got the history.

sucks he isn't doing anything really anymore.

hes working on pete the cat on amazon.

The only hacky thing he ever did was that weird-ass Sonic comic he did for the official Twitter where he mostly just poorly traced the characters.

As an artist or as a director or producer? Please don't tell me he's an executive producer cause that means he isn't drawing on it. I haven't seen this dude in the spotlight since the 2011 special.

The most interesting thing about season 4 is that the Hey Arnold creator of all people worked on it.

Stupid retard.

He's both

More weird trivia, the Hey Arnold creator was married to Matt Groening's sister, Lisa Groening.

probably was pitching his pilot to CN after nick fucked him over with hey arnold after they switched the tv movie special and jungle movie.
and that CN pitch never went anywhere.
i think it had to with the fact that majority of the characters were adults and the target audience would have found its setting and concept to be boring. it doesnt even feel like a CN show feels more like something fox, or abc would make
i know courage, johnny bravo, megas xlr, and samurai jack had adult characters but their premises were strong enough for kids to watch

Kids don't need to get the reference. It provides a good structure for a story that they can understand without *needing* to get the source. The reference is more for the animators to have fun with and the parents to enjoy.

When I was a kid, I didn't have to see Casablanca, A Fistful of Dollars, The Marx Brothers or Laurel and Hardy or any of the other old films that may have been referenced to understand a joke. As a kid you may identify some of the tropes if they're used often enough in general pop culture. Otherwise, it doesn't take away from the story if you don't know that the plot is based on another film. You get to watch it thinking the idea is fresh while people who know will know.

Pretty sure he's SE Asian.

Is that who he cheated on when he started fucking the creator of Primos?

the Hey Arnold creator was married to Matt Groening's sister, Lisa Groening

Why isn't this brought up when people accuse Dana Terrace of only getting to produce The Owl House because she was fucking Alex Hirsch? Is it because Bartlett isn't a woman?

I don't know anything about that, but they separated so that might explain why.
Bartlett was already working on PeeWee's Playhouse (he did the "Penny" claymation segments), he met Lisa Groening while working on it. So he was known and working on a major show before they met.

Is it because Bartlett isn't a woman?

Maybe, but more likely because it's trivia from before the people who complain about stuff like that online were born.

They were colonized by Spain so technically they get both titles of Hispanic and SE Asian

Does that mean Indians get to call themselves British or Anglo-Saxon?

No, specifically because they don't want that

Are you alleging that Filipinos specifically DO want to be considered hispanic?

Not quite

Yes

van

He's Dutch

Nope

That's just an abbreviation of his name

What race is this? I always thought he was white

Yes, modern Englishmen resemble Indians much more than their Irish and French ancestors

I assume Seth would be too if he still was interested in cartoons

the man runs a foundation that recently restored like an hours worth of classic cartoons.

No, english knew better than to racemix with indians, it was only the spaniards who fucked everything that moved.
