ITT: cartoons that failed to live up to its hype

The 90s New Woody Woodpecker Show had a shit ton of promotion and newspaper articles hailing the return of Woody Woodpecker after 20+ years of dormancy, yet the actual show was very mediocre and quickly forgotten about. It was so bad, that it killed off Woody Woodpecker for 15 years until the 2017 movie.

Boomer tier advertising that was doomed to fail.

The show honestly wasn’t even bad either

Compared to other 90s revival of legacy cartoons (Droopy: Master Detective, Pink Panther 93, Baby Huey Show, Casper, Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat etc...) this was easily the worst one. The writers did not understand Woody and his style of comedy at all.

Blame executive meddling, it started out as a Animaniacs-esque sketch show with various Walter Lantz characters, but ended up just being Woody and Chilly Willy. Even the artstyle went from being Spumco-inspired to cheap Hanna-Barbera for the human designs.

The one that always comes to mind for me is that whoever made Butt Ugly Martians honestly thought is was going to be the next Ninja Turtles and be this enduring multimedia franchise.
There are several articles detailing just how much faith they put behind that shit.

What's up with these weekly "shitting on Woody Woodpecker" threads?
The original shorts are great regardless of if you like the character or not, never watched the 90s tho

does this technically count? Like after the 95 movie was a success at the box office, this animated series based off the show was supposed to kick off the franchise (as well as the two direct-to-video movies) in hopes for a sequel to get made

oh god RIP David Lynch. I can't tell if this was his biggest contribution or either his Playstation commercials or his role on The Cleveland Show

BUM was a clear money-laundering scheme. The creators put out just enough shitty product to hold up their end of the deal, then ran with the money.

Butt-ugy bros..I don't think the movie is happening

I think it’s because he’s perhaps the largest cartoon icon who has fallen the furthest
He used to be Mickey and Bugs level but I’d argue Oswald is more popular then him now, and that used to be Woody’s supporting character 2 decades ago

Bold of them trying to use Oswald only to back down.

Nevermind that. Why are they coupled with renewed posting about David Lynch?

Different doesn’t necessarily mean bad, correct they tried to modernize the character’s whole approach and presentation but straying from what worked in the 40s but might not in the 90s doesn’t mean bad.
Only Twisted Tales I’d say is better in your list since that blows ever other one out of the water

Weekly? When was the last one?

Only brazil like pica pau

realistically, who would direct a Butt Ugly Martians movie?

Michael bay

I'd watch it

Bay almost always made kino in his heyday so yeah it wouldve been great

but who will play as the martians?

Not surprised, it lacked soul.

Reminder that this show only existed because Tex's surviving family needed college money, and Chuck Jones had to make sure DiC didn't rip them off.

NOT FOR BROADCAST

air it anyway

Can you imagine if they used him and then did the trade with Disney? Like would Universal release the 1999 show without the Oswald shorts and people would go DID YOU KNOW THE 1999 OSWALD CARTOONS ARE LOST MEDIA or some shit

taint a mans legacy because his destitute family needed money

Thats genuinely fucked up oh my god

Sad

It was a good show, at least the Carbunkle episodes were, I really liked those.

Animainiacs were never good
