To be fair, as much as I dislike Stolas, that premise was the basis of this movie. It's the female character who ultimately decides to cut off the exploitative relationship though instead.

Stolas' relationship with Blitzo is all backwards on this. Blitzo is too desperate to keep his safety net he'll willfully let himself be exploited just to feel like he can have agency with his business. Stolas meanwhile holds the actual cards of controlling the relationship and when he decides to do the decent thing of removing the exploitative part of it he makes it into a trap to snap on Blitzo if he didn't react exactly as Stolas desired it to.

Stolas very visibly and desperately was fighting the possibility Blitzo would not reciprocate him, compare to Edward in Pretty Woman who lets Vivian go after her boundaries of not accepting payment for love is set and shows up later after the emotions have calmed down to woo her properly because he does earnestly love her.

But it works because Edward is actually a highborn classy man who can take the rejection and disappointment without crumbling like a wet paper bag as opposed to Stolas being a dramatic immature retard.
