I was watching a season 1 episode last night and it was put together so much better. There were different angles, and cuts to character's faces during dialogue. Now it's just like family guy where a whole scene happens on one screen.

The show got worse about this and then it got better. The new studio is an improvement.

I don't think Planetina is a more extreme version of Morty's good traits. I think she's Morty devoid of his best traits, his empathy, his ability to see the grey areas and meet people where they are, even if he doesn't agree with them.
I think they could both grow if they spent more time together. Morty would learn that inaction can be just as harmful as action, and Planetina would learn that the most immediate solution is not always the best one; that torching a bunch of miners doesn't actually fix anything and that we need long-term solutions to long-term problems.

But, I just remembered the version of her that knows Morty got frundled, and the one in this universe would therefore still be with her "kids"... so there's basically zero reason for them to meet again.

In the most recent promo they are building a car like the ones from the wasteland episode so they are probably going back there

Fun fact, this was originally the fifth episode of the season but they reordered it.

We're getting punked? Rick is the only character that hates the lore and breaks the 4th wall to remind everyone. But even though he acts like he's standing in for the writers, the show delivers on the lore and backstory stuff all the time. We get tons of cool stuff like Unmortricken, even among slop episodes like that dogshit alphabet one.
The hole episode was great too, one of the best ones in a while and ended a lackluster season on a high note.

I liked the one with the time breaking and multiple scenes playing at once. That felt like a proper start to a season. Something ambitious and actually entertaining and not deviating too far from "Rick and Morty" as focus characters. This one was primarily Summer's story with Morty's acting as a close B plot but not nearly enough to make up for how fucking awful her scenes were. I don't care if it was intentionally obnoxious, they still go back and forth on how awesome her Tech CEO self was. Just because she starts using instagram phrases to intentionally be obnoxious to Beth doesn't suddenly negate how insistent they were she was a badass in the matrix.

Which reminds me, where was he this episode? I tuned in late (when Beth & Summer were at brunch before the makeovers) so I don't know if they mentioned what he was doing in the first 5ish minutes.

Jerry's honestly a cool dude. He's kind of a needy wimp, but he knows lots of cool and useful stuff and he stands up when he really needs to. He'd make a pretty good dad irl, better than mine. Deserves maybe 3% of the crap he gets from his faggot family for just trying to exist as a normal guy in their insane world of debauchery and insane bullshit that's just constantly happening 24/7 for no reason.

Rick and Morty has those writers where they take a generally well-meaning person or set of behaviors and have to tear into it and villanize it to the audience which just causes essentially psychological brainrot. Like the shit with Jerry being a wimp and sad equalling him being intentionally an emotional parasite on people rather than just his actual personality being meek and needing guidance and such. I've actively seen people watch shows and movies with this type of writing about how general traits are actually this really evil annoying thing and then latch onto it. I have no idea what this phenomena is called but it pisses me off to no end. Like if something were to say nice people are manipulative and only doing that because it forces you to do them favors or whatever. Like they're trying to compare it to specific niches of people at large and demonizes basic ass traits entirely, then the characters say "you're right! i am a manipulative person for being scared and weak!" or some broken ass logic shit.

Rick and Morty is a trauma marionette show for the writers who work on it. Jerry is mistreated because most of the writers hate their dad, but also because they feed off of social media posts and things they see on PornHub to feed back into the show.

Jerry has never been treated better.

Nope. Everyone should just be a belligerent asshole like Rick, all the time. If you're not constantly shutting everyone down, shunning them for having the nerve to exist around you and gloating about how special and cool you are, you're a loser.
Or at least, that's how they all look at Jerry for some reason, and even gaslit (and I loathe to use that word, trust me) him into seeing himself that way. He wasn't like that in S1, he used to stand up for himself. And that side of Jerry still comes out whenever he's backed into a corner. Put Jerry in the right situation and he becomes a monster-slaying badass, a tribe-leading shaman, a stoic wasteland survivor.
I fucking LOVED original timeline Jerry for the way he trashed Morty. Morty deserved it, big time, and Jerry really did let him off easy, that was no joke. Everything Jerry said in that ep was spot on.

I think I’m the biggest Space Beth defender on Anon Babble, but I acknowledge that even my position is only that she has unmet potential, not that she’s been good.
Beth is the weakest character of the family by far, she gets a few good lines once in a while, but they blew their load on the marriage on the rocks plots with Jerry all the way back in Season 1. None of their reconciliations have ever been as earnest or pitch perfect as the climax of Interdimensional Cable, everything since then was a weak retread and they know it because by and large they’ve stopped doing them.
Jerry is arguably the greatest success story of the modern writers, they turned a buttmonkey into a sympathetic, sincere and self aware counterpoint to Rick’s nihilistic/hedonistic/detached view on reality.
Beth got no such upgrade. Froopyland had potential but it was handled clunkily and resolved on *the* worst Rick speech in the show. The choice at the end was mildly compelling.
Space Beth’s initial return wasn’t interesting and she was characterized as a boring one note stoic action girl. I think they hoped we’d buy her because she is the connection to the ongoing Galactic Federation thread but very few people care about that because of how simply they were done away with in S3E1. Her canonicity is also boring.
It was Bethstic Twinstinct that finally gave Beth and her *something*. They finally began a conversation about the struggle that led to the decision to want to clone, how one wants to be with her father and one wants to be like her father. The indulgent masturbatory fling she has with herself also begins to hint at how she doesn’t feel understood. This resolves in the best way possible imo because Jerry actually welcomes the throuple, which shows that someone outside of her accepts both aspects of herself.

People still like this show?

This dynamic between the three is interesting and is where the potential lies, Space Beth is a bridge between the domestic side of the show and the sci-fi/adventurous side. She has potential to make Beth and Jerry more interesting without having a same old recycled marriage spat.
She’s been completely underutilized and thrown in the background since Bethstic Twinstinct which I think was a mistake. S7 not having B-plots did some damage to the supporting cast.
But it looks like S8 will be where she sinks or swims, she’s got two episodes of relevance. Time to see if Space Beth can add anything to the family or if she’s just an excuse to do straight man action stories. I get why people don’t like her, I have my doubts, but I also think this season will be the final judgement call on her for me. She’s simply not been capitalized on enough yet to say “don’t use her”.

tl;dr Beth is basically two characters or put another way those two characters are different sides of the same person and maybe that might end up resolving in an interesting way if they actually try something.

She also changes her mind under no pressure immediately without a reason to. The best moment is when she is honest about how much she cares for Morty, but even that is resolved too quickly as Morty changes his mind right away. Both characters just flip without justification.

When you have an order for 70 episodes, you know not every one is gonna be great. They screen these to test audiences. Decent ep. Wasn't the funniest but I liked the Summer/Beth and Rick/Morty interactions even if they're inevitably getting mindwiped in the end. Almost makes you forget that best boy Jerry wasn't in this episode. This show is still too meta for its own good, they had to shoehorn in the whole "haha they were in another simulation all along but not really" bit in at the end. Part of the advantage of being meta is that you can throw this kind of plot and expect audiences to be with you all the way with minimal exposition. I feel like we could've gotten more though. Maybe push Summer into being more successful at manipulating Beth to tie to the ending better and have Beth come to some greater conclusion about caring about her daughter's validation more than that of a similar-minded friend. Not every story needs character development but Beth's basically the only one who can get it here and this is a character-driven episode.

I don't know about any of that, but him trapping them in a phone charger matrix to teach some exceptionally petty lesson and then forgetting to pull them out was a great premise. Punished Morty and Summer coming out of there with issues and ultimately bonding over it before the mind wipe was cool.

Rick two seasons ago would have sulked he was disagreed with and rubbed it in everyone’s face when he was right. He also probably would have discredited Matrix Morty’s feelings. He feels more well rounded while still being Rick.

I don't want to just disregard Space Beth since I don't mind her as an idea, but they have generally fumbled the ball and failed to do anything interesting with her. She's just kind of there sometimes and hasn't offered much as a character.

I think the biggest problem with R&M is, other than the female writers, Rick being way too fucking competent and isn't afraid of anything. He's too full of augments and bionics and literal magic devices that can do anything and everything. Earlier seasons he ran away from shit. He had to actually think about how to get out of problems, but now, for example, he can just spray magic goo on summer and morty so they don't die to radiation, teleport through the wall, pull a magic backpack out of his ass to hold the nuclear rod, and instantly heal all radiation he took himself.

They’ve done a good job finally developing Rick away from his shark jump in Season 3 over the course of Season 6 and Season 7, but you’re right the last remaining stain of it is his immense powerlevel.

It's weird how much they were able to do in earlier seasons squeezing everything out of the sci-fi concepts/ spoofs. They might not nail it every time but it always felt like a good one and done. If you count The Hole I guess) simulation story with the cool concept of dealing with it after leaving which was just a gag the first time Roy came around yet they somehow did less than all the other ones even without having Summer simultaneously doing a separate die hard story.
It was a cool idea but they just ran out of time and decided to wipe their memories because time ran out instead of the concept itself being fully explored

The first two seasons by and large are fucking laser precise. Those scripts are rock tight. Things changed in Season 3.

It's a great episode on its own. One secondary thing I really liked about it was giving Rick consequences when he used godlike powers to just stop time as the show went on he just became overpowered. It was probably unintentional they just wrote themselves into having to resolve this time freeze thing but modern Rick could never be written into this corner as he is just OP.
Even in today's episode he just gets to fly into a nuclear reactor and wipe people's memories within a minute no problems
