never watched one of these types of shows before, is american dad good?

It starts off meh, then eventually becomes the best of the animated family sitcoms.
The opposite of family guy.

I did not care for the first episode at all, never watched past that
This. It starts off as Political Family Guy with a conservative middle class family instead of an apolitical working class one, but eventually they discard that weak concept and start leaning into absurd, character-driven humour.
Funnily enough, the dramatic uptick in quality kind of lines up with when Roger goes from an alien hiding in the attic and lazing around the house all day to a persona switching omni-character

Francine is best tv mom
The first five or so seasons are excellent, it gets mid after that and a few seasons later it gets awful.
Strips down to a bikini 2 minutes later
God she's the best
Francine's great because she's allowed to be just as silly and stupid as the other characters instead of being exclusively stuck in the "voice of reason" role. Same as Hayley in later seasons, when they leaned into her being a burnout loser
Not related to American Dad, but this is also why I love Linda Belcher. More female characters need to be allowed to be funny and goofy in these animated sitcoms instead of just gutting and shaking their heads at the other characters antics.
Although even that can be done well, as seen with when they made Marge comedically boring in later episodes of early Simpsons.
Half of what I like about American Dad is that there is no real voice of reason. The family starts doing something stupid and everyone is just all in on it or if they try to be the voice of reason their opposition is just as dumb.
I would argue that what makes the show great is that every character has an equal chance of being either a voice of reason or insane depending on the episode. Literally every member of the Smith family has taken a turn being either the voice of reason or completely detached from reality and it just works so perfectly with how absurd the humour of the show is.
Literally where is the lie
It starts off eh then it gets good then it gets bad then good again then kinda bad and now it’s eh and no one pays attention anymore
Yeah, that part's great. Even Stan's allowed to be the voice of reason sometimes. Mostly with Roger but there was a few with Francine.
What episode?
The lie is the Family Guy slander
Do you just throw around insults without knowing their meaning?
Which episode is this?

When was Roger ever the voice of reason?
Or Klaus?
There's been a few times Klaus tried to tell Stan or Roger not to do something, or to warn the family that someone was doing something crazy. Roger is occasionally reasonable, when he was like Dr. Penguin or when he told Stan to say no to bullock (though it was after he tried to drown a kid in a car).
A lot. I can't name the specific episodes, but Roger is often the voice of reason to Francine, Steve and Stan and Klaus is often the voice of reason to Francine, Hayley and Stan
Oh wait, I can name a few episodes.
Fart-Break Hotel had Roger as Francine's voice of reason and the Hurricane episode had Klaus as Stan's voice of reason.
Post a clip of it!
Despite being such a shit psychiatrist Dr Penguin was easily among Roger's most sane personas. Shame he died.
Got a link for the season so far? Haven't found it on any of my usual sites.
What I wouldn't give to do body shots off both Hayley and Francine's asscracks
It's the best one that's currently airing. Not an achievement but still.
Family Guy (Classic Seasons)
lol
Simpsons (Classic Seasons) >= Family Guy (Classic Seasons) >= American Dad >>> Family Guy (Modern Seasons) >> Simpsons (Modern Seasons
Yeah pre-reboot. They're pretty decent, if not a bit derivative of classic Simpsons.
Honestly I think the show stays pretty good post-reboot for at least a little while. Season 4 isn't all that much different than the first 3 seasons.
The seasonal rot really starts to set in starting around season 7 or 8.
The bigger crime here is them just having hayley in her usual attire, but a skirt instead of jeans.
Give us back early season bikini Hayley, god damnit.
Gotta do everything my damn self...
American Dad's peak is much better than Family Guy's peak, I'd move it to second position. Even when it was good, Family Guy was never as funny or well-written as American Dad
None can compete.
Zoomers love zombie family guy zoom zoom
The first 5 season are alright. Season 6 through like 15 are so fucking funny. Can't speak beyond that
Why must I always learn that there's a new American Dad season through such random means?
FIVE episodes already??
They upped Francine's thighs in this episode.
No way, Family Guy didn't go downhill until somewhere around the teen seasons, MAYBE starting around Season 9 at the earliest. I say "maybe" because that season started with the kino hour-long murder mystery
no wonder jeff thinks of francine when doing hayley
First season is a bit hit or miss. But does get better after that.
Season 1 had the best gun jokes though.

I remember season 8 Family Guy used to get a lot of flak for its humour relying on gore.
Thats weird, I use that pantry a lot
And the Paprika, not enough
heh
