Why did Marvel Brownwash Scarlet Witch?

Has anyone from Marvel Comics talked publicly about why, starting in 2023, they suddenly chose to give Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver new, darker skin tones (and it was very sudden, the preview for the first issue of Steve Orlando's series had them colored normally, then the published issue made them look brown)?

I've gone past being upset that they're pandering to the people who scream the the MCU version (in every way that matters the most comic accurate adaptation) is "whitewashed" because of the identity of some of Wanda's 900 different canon parents. Now I just find it funny that no one from Marvel has ever acknowledged this is what they're doing, though colorists have occasionally talked about being advised to darken her.

I don't know when the MCU version will stop being "dead" but it's kind of unique for the comics division to throw their lot in with the people who want her to stay dead. Like so much else about Wanda it's not quite like what happens to any other superhero character.

My specific problems with it are a) it doesn't make any sense given Wanda and Pietro's history, since we know they look like they could be the children of white Americans, and b) the people who pushed for this are the people who want to cancel the MCU version, and they now use the recolor as "proof" that MCU Wanda stole the job of a brown Romani/Jewish woman or whatever.

They get really mad when you tell them this, but being Romani is a very minor part of Wanda's overall convoluted history, there's almost nothing pre-MCU to suggest that she's Romani by birth, and the MCU version is correct about what her origin should be (generic white European girl from fake European country) and how she should look.

It's not accurate, though. They were white Americans in the 1970s, then retconned into being white kids adopted by stereotypical Romani. So they were colored as white because they were already established as white kids with white parents.

Before 2013 there's exactly one comic with two lines that call Magneto's wife a "Balkan g-psy" and there is literally no other reference to the twins being even part-Romani by birth.

So the color change has nothing to do with the vast majority of their comic history; it's based on taking a very minor part of their history, one of their many multiple parents/origins, and recoloring them in a way that makes no sense.

Basically people who think comics Wanda isn't white are people who hate comics Wanda and hate the MCU version for being comics accurate.

Finally allowing her heritage to be visually visible in terms of skin tone so that she doesn’t just look like a white woman cosplaying is objectively good. You have no good argument against it. Your feelings being hurt doesn’t matter.

Plenty of gypsies have lighter skin, random brownwashing a character is not logical no matter the retcon. Changing the racial characteristics at all is the racist move here.
