The reason the 40 cakes works is because it's Silver Age. It's a bit like Superman promoting cigarettes or something like that. But you couldn't pull that shit off now without it feeling like contrived bullshit.

Remember how one of the major criticisms of MoS was that Superman and Lois were busy making out while the city was in ruins? Suddenly that's not an issue for people anymore.

My real issue is the way they are using a foreign nation as political bait. There have been comics about Superman intervening in wars, if he should or shouldn’t get involved, being seen as an immigrant because he’s from another planet, fighting the Klan and more like that. But this movie seemingly erases any complexity and maturity by just making Lex responsible for everything, and all Superman needs to do is stop him so it’s all fixed. There’s war imagery in some of the trailers clearly inspired by modern events, but they stripped away the nuance, like WB is afraid to be called “woke”.
Also, its like Gunn has a fetish of american superheroes going to other countries to be their saviors. Happened in suicide squad, happened in Creature Commandos and now this. He uses the general term of “third world country” without committing to using a real one or what’s the experience of actual people living in the third world.
