I get that he's trying to make an already established universe work, but just having a bunch of cameos of other DC characters does NOT work, there's far better ways to do it than that, shit a fucking "Booster Gold's Gold Soda" advert and a "A New Green Lantern?" headline alone could do the trick better.

It is actually insane how hard the Cloverfield franchise fell off.
A lot of people don't remember this but one of the most significant things about that film is that it's probably the last time you ever saw so much organic hype drummed up for a new IP where everyone was running around trying to get news about the film. They literally had to change the production name multiple times because people kept finding out what it was and trying to leak stuff.

It wasn't just inspired by the first Godzilla but was just as ballsy and provocative as the first Godzilla. I was 9 when it came out and even I remember that fucking poster of the statue of Liberty being burned into my head and jumping up and down wanting to see it, and having to basically snatch the DVD copy from my uncle while we were on vacation to do so.
Part of it is that Abrams was known at the time but he certainly wasn't a household name like Nolan yet so even stuff Inception doesn't really compare to what you had going on with that movie.
That's the big shame of Cloverfield, it was probably the last time you saw mainstream audiences genuinely excited and 'hyped' for risk and creativity

The only reason it was greenlit was because the original writer came to Gunn with a script idea that was good. Gunn talked about being somewhat liberal in greenlighting projects if someone came to him with a good enough idea.

There are a few that would have drummed up similar hype. Sinners, M3gan, some of the A24 films maybe.
Thing is, like you said, Cloverfield had the ARG, the sense of mystery, the way it made itself feel real. And it was also just an extremely ballsy movie that came out post-9/11 before the recession really hit which made it this perfect window to release a film like that.
And it does feel like it's the last time you'll really get that from a new IP
