Elio production budget ballooned to $300 million

Back in 2023, a source revealed that the studio had serious concerns about the film during production, indicating it needed substantial reworking. Initially slated for a March 2024 release, “Elio” was delayed to June 2025. The release delay seems to confirm those struggles. “Elio” was initially directed by Adrian Molina, but in 2024, he was replaced due to a “scheduling conflict,” which absolutely nobody believes. Despite his departure, Molina still holds a co-directing credit. The film is now being led by Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian (“Turning Red”). Behind the scenes, “Elio” has experienced major upheaval throughout its lengthy development, to the point where the budget tipped toward the $300M mark. A significant portion of the creative team was replaced midway through production—which, if you’ve seen both the 2023 and 2025 trailers, explains the dramatic shift in tone and style. While most of the character designs have remained intact, the latest trailer, released last month, revealed that some heroes and villains swapped roles entirely. Alongside the director change, the film underwent extensive revisions in both its narrative and character development. The earlier trailer leaned into a more somber sci-fi, highlighting Elio’s emotional distance from his hardworking mother. Although comedic elements were present later in the trailer, the overall portrayal of the protagonist was notably gloomier. That contrasts sharply with the lighter, more upbeat tone seen in the updated footage—and that’s all Domee Shi’s doing, as she was tasked with making it a more comedic affair. A good film might still emerge when “Elio” premieres next month, but cautious optimism is warranted given the considerable drama surrounding the production since it began in the summer of 2022.

lol lmao even
Disney's going to lose even more money

What the fuck are those ugly monstrosities

They basically just remade the entire movie after the first trailer

What the fuck was so wrong with the film that they had to gut it and essentially make a completely different film with its assets?

revealed that some heroes and villains swapped roles entirely.

Which characters and why?
The Aliens look cool, seethe more that it isnt another boring princess schlock instead

original was darker, serious, and more gloomy

"and that’s all Domee Shi’s doing, as she was tasked with making it a more comedic affair"

I want to read the original script before they decided they wanted to make it happy and sillier.
In the original you could see Elio was freaked out at being abducted and was in survival-mode. I think it could've been cooler.

Oh youre referring to the webm, never mind
Wonder if well ever learn more about the original version and why it was scrapped. Reminds me of the captain america 4 reshoots

What the fuck has been going on at Pixar and Disney Animation? Why can't they make literally anything of passable quality anymore?

I liked elemental and turning red

They spent $300 million pushing Chtorr on Anon Babble?

I liked elemental and turning red

please get better taste

They're required to make sure everything is diverse. From the story, the animation, and the people working on it.
They data track screentime appearances and dialogue to ensure that the equality is backed by numbers.

Those movies were actually enjoyable unlike wreck it ralph 2 or frozen slop. Inside out 2 was also nice because i wanna fuck the female emotions, Disgust especially. Cry more

what software is this?

I dont give a shit about the big bad DEI boogeyman, i just really relaly hated how soul looked. Same with strange world and lightyear, tho the later two also had really really bad stories.

300 million dollars of bean mouth

lasseter never would've allowed this lmao

Why does bean mouth trigger autists so much?

it's soulless and derivative. pixar is supposed to be industry leading, cutting edge. but it's just 9 figure calarts slop at this point. art styles do matter.

Its a good art style, better then generic ass classic disney art style

Which characters and why?

I think they’re just comparing the trailers and noting that the scary alien dude looked like Elio’s friend in the first trailer, and in the second he’s clearly a bad guy who is conquering Earth. But when you’re only going by trailers, it’s really difficult to say for sure what changes were made. Probably the character flipped from good guy to bad guy, but it’s sorta possible that both scenes could have remained intact and the character just goes through a heel turn.

movie had more gloomy, dramatic feeling

highlighted themes of emotional distance and loneliness

movie gets significantly overhauled

it's now a funny comedy fart movie for the kiddos

"Animation is Cinema" bros keep on winning

I’d wait for a more reliable source but either way it’s gonna be a flop because Pixar has failed to garner interest in the project. The drastic overhaul didnt help.

good bait

So i assume this isnt accurate about the final movie anymore then

IMG_7160.jpg - 1290x1410, 322.32K

I'm a good little liberal boy, I don't care if the entire film is filled with homosexuals and browns, I just hate modern movies but I can't put my finger on why

I'll blame it on the artstyle and the story, that's the ticket

Seems like it's going to be the typical

No one understand the weird passionate main character who is so unique, so they make friends in another world

alternative movie news

This is definitely not a reliable source. Are you all actually brain dead?

The art style sucks, lightyears pretentious grounded sci fi setting and plot sucked, strange worlds anprim moral was fucking stupid, fuck you
And im all for it

Also, is no one itt even going to mention that it's already confirmed that Elio's parents are dead by the time the main plot starts?

But isnt the mom in the trailer?

You say that, but this has actually worked for Emperor’s New Groove, Toy Story, and Zootopia. Those all had earlier scripts that were darker or edgier or feelsier, but they would have been garbage if actually allowed to release without their overhauls.

Dunno if I can say the same is gonna be necessarily true for Elio. I thought Elio’s first trailer was better than its second. It’s probably gonna be more like The Good Dinosaur where the earlier pitch did need some reworking, but the finished product still came out really bad.

no mention of Coco 2

no source for $300M claim

no mention of already confirmed fact that Elio's an orphan

no one itt capable of understanding the (obvious) fact that nothing in the 2025 trailer contradicts the tweet in

Is this a bit?

No. Olga is his aunt in the final movie.

muh bean meme

If you're using the term "bean mouth" unironically, you've already lost. Even if you absolutely hate the art style, "bean mouth" is either not a real thing, or so broad that it could accurately describe millions of distinct art styles.

aunt sends him to a summer camp to make friends

is too unique so makes friends in another world

has a clone to take their place on Earth

When you pay to watch a movie you want the characters to look good.

Fuck this looks like shit, everything with it looks like shit.

And it’ll either go

the two friends from different worlds unfortunately can’t stay together and are bitter sweetly separated forever

the quirky protagonist walks away sad, but, having learned a valuable lesson about friendship, manages to make new friends in the real world

the real world friends are literal who characters who only show up in the last two minutes and the audience walks away feeling sorta bummed and dissatisfied

OR

the overwhelming power of friendship allows the protagonist and his alien buddy to overcome any obstacle! They stay good friends and live happily ever after

the audience learns the valuable life lesson of the importance of being lucky enough to have a cool supernatural alien buddy fall into your lap

It looks cute to me, and apparently others feel the same way as me. Seethe

It looks like ass.

People still believe World of Reel?

He dislike it, you like it.
The point will be if there will be enough people that likes it so it is sustainable.
And if they keep wasting money on remaking it, it won't

No matter how the final movie turns out, it’s still going to get nominated for Best Animated Film at every movie award show next year.

I wonder if they’re making original content bad on purpose so that they can just focus on endless sequels and remakes. Or if they genuinely just don’t know how to make entertainment anymore.

Then how do you want to call it?
At least calarts was a worst name.
What will be a better describer for this art style?

ballooned to $300 million

Dobbohohoho...

I heard rumors that Elio was originally going to be gay or something LGBT.

People were only spreading the rumor cause they learned the head director was gay.

real world

"What makes my world any less real than yours?"

It's neither. It's just that (You) expected something that was never a real possibility in the first place.

Source: My ass

they genuinely just don’t know how to make entertainment anymore

Turns out that making a director trauma dump on the audience every movie isn't a great strategy.
Nor it's turning a personal story into a mass appeal product, this shit production has been a mess.
I still remember when the communiverse nonsense was front and center for this movie idea.
Now the only plot points that seem to have survived are abduction and ugly human designs

No American animated movies for me this year, I’ll wait for actual kino, thank you very much.

Spending that much money on an original scifi film. $750m break even point at the box office. They should've taken the losses with the original mediocre version as there's no way this is getting past $600m. Even Elemental which was considered a box office surprise only made 500m.

As far as I know, the only late complete overhaul which worked out for them was Frozen, which was re-animated really really fast when they changed Elsa from an anti-hero to a tragic heroine. Almost all their other rewrites were really early on when the film was still in the animatics stage (Rapunzel Unbraided, The Bear and the Bow). They even gave up with pic related.

Meanwhile Illumination makes a movie for $75m so even their flops make money. Disney really need to sort out their spending.

gigantic.png - 2114x2108, 3.12M

How the fuck did this manage to be the best thing Pixar have put out in years? Not even damning with faint praise, it was good.

3571.jpg - 1200x721, 84.19K

Kinda wish they stuck with gigantic.
Maybe they needed a spin on a fairy tale to get out of their creative rut.

There's no source for the 300 million claim and you're retarded for believing it that easily,

This is just word salad.

Ahh, perfect for the theater kids who make up the majority of American animation fans these days.

The storyboard were extremely raunchy. I think a lot of stuff is being held back by censorship, so it takes crazy artists and writers behind the scenes to push their limits, so after the censorships/changes come through, they still have a decent end result.
Win or Lose's concept was really cool. Too bad they're done with originals.

At least something approximating it is still being made at Skydance but the same director.

They do have a fairy tale film in the making: Penelope, adaptation of Princess and the Pea. Their big problem is Jennifer Lee who really hates romance and is big on the worst kind of poorly written "Strong Female Character". You need romance in these films, no matter how much the usual types claim it's sexist. She was responsible for removing the twink star and the villain couple from Wish and she removed Kristoff's arc almost completely from Frozen 2.

The storyboard were extremely raunchy

Based, probably lots of lewds of the sexy mom drawn at pixar too
