what are the things you hate most about the legend of korra.
Korra hate thread
It exists. This picrel episode from the original show was a cry for help. The fact that Korra exists followed by another upcoming continuation proves that no one came to help.
I'll start. The dark avatar is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever seen. It shits all over the themes of balance and harmony the original show hammered home, and turns the role of the avatar into a simplified battle of good vs evil.
her sexy body, it makes it hard to hate her
I don't know why it was so satisfying to watch Korra powerless, horrified as they poisoned her. I was like "nice move Zaheer."
they made Aang a bad dad.
they shit up nearly all of the original cast.
they fucked with the world building just to give it a 1920's aesthetic.
Korra was a cunty mary sue.
the "twist" with season one's villain sucked ass. should have kept him as a non-bender.
the wide spread use of metal bending is bullshit.
the "muh special variant" bending shit was an absolute ass pull.
the pussyfooted gay pandering in the last scene of the last episode of the series was lame and gay. a Schrodinger's corpo pandering experiment. the scene both panders to fags and is just girls being friends (depending on where the episode was aired).
she breaks the avatar cycle.
avatar wan.
Korra was a cunty mary sue.
This gets thrown around a lot, but I will never understand this particular criticism. Mary Sues are characterized by hypercompetence or obscenely accommodating degrees of in-universe popularity and/or respect, often in lieu of a good reason for it. Korra was distrusted by too many people and got her ass handed to her far too often to be a mary sue. (I could be wrong, but I actually think most of her fights ended in her defeat or a draw.)
Kira Yamato is a Mary Sue
Carol Danvers (MCU) is a Mary Sue.
Rey is a Mary Sue (probably the definitive modern example).
Korra on the other hand is a lot closer to the opposite end of the spectrum than any of those. She was one of the few times men writing a female protagonist were actually willing to rough her up a little...and ended up roughing her up quite a lot. And in the next series, she's seen as responsible for destroying the world as they know it, go figure.
She's so obnoxious that I couldn't even enjoy her being sad and crippled. I just wanted her fucking dead.
at this point I hate Korra's fanbase more than the show or character. they've metatasized into a toxic glazing defense force that insists the show and character are flawless but she's still not overpowered or a mary sue and if you have any complaints about anything it's because you're racist and sexist.
That they took the amazing idea of a brash, hot brown tomboy Avatar who's the opposite of Aang and they completely dropped the ball with her.
It wasn't longer.
Show should have just been the miniseries, character would have been remembered much better.
I think a big part of it is that Korra doesn't really start facing consequences until like, book 3, very tail end of book 2. At which point the show had literally been pulled off the airwaves and relegated to online only because nobody was watching it. There's a very real chance that the people that say Korra is a Mary Sue only saw half the show
"IM THE AVATER, YOU GATTA DEAL WITH IT"
that is the majority of her character. she was flinging fire as a natural water bender as a toddler.
at least she struggled with air bending and some of her struggles with it were pretty good. but wasn't her struggles with it mostly due to her "I'm the best" attitude?
Personal biggest ones for me
Lightningbending Generators
Lightning and Metalbending being common
Platinum mechs
Zaheer mastering Airbending in the span of a week from within a jail cell because he read some philosophy over a decade ago*
Amon busting out a super high level water bending technique in broad daylight in front of a crowd for basically no reason
Lionturtles giving bending
Republic city being New York
Magmabending
*"Uh well he didn't master it he got his ass whooped by Tenzin". Shut up. He developed and used multiple techniques entirely on his own, that is literally the air nomads definition of mastery.
Actually agree with this even though I dislike Korra as a character. She is a bad character but I wouldn't call her a Mary Sue.
I still feel like they could have made the idea work if they tried to embrace a more Yin and Yang symbolism for the two spirits, but they decided to double down on Vaatu just being Satan so he must be locked away.
this much seething a good decade later
Success breeds jealousy I guess.
Korra was a massive failure relative to the success of atla. It got pulled off air and went digital only, and basically killed the franchise for a decade.
I remember that, people didn't even know when it was airing and I think with the last two seasons they got dumped in bulk on nick's website without marketing it at all. Whole release after season 2 was a mess because they instantly regretted ordering so many more episodes ahead of the fact.
I dislike the idea of the avatar spirit being distinct from the avatar regardless.
The Yin Yang angle certainly makes more sense, but the problem I have with it is that the avatar is already a balancing force. Why does there need to be an opposing spirit to keep balance?
Dump cunt, worst character
Yup, this is exactly right. I think they did a decent job of rounding Korra out by the end, but by that point a lot of people didn't care. I think there is a sexist component to the Korra hate, but she is undeniably obnoxious for the first half.
Korra basically isn't am active character in seasons 3 and 4 and plot just kinda happens to & around her
Fine for ATLA cus they were traveling into episodic stories in a wider narrative, not in a wholey serialised show
Assami is a nothing character who has everything there to be a cool character but it probably wouldn't required making her somewhat grey
Bolin is a nothing character
Mako is just mostly a shitty guy
Most side characters suck or are uninteresting
The romance sucks
Most of the villains are retarded or boring
Amon is just a liar coping with daddy issues
Unalock
zaheer is straight up retarded "order is bad and chaos is good because... THEY JIST *ARE* OKAY?!?!?!?!"
Kuvira is interesting at first but then she just becomes cartoonishly authoritarian
being in 1930s is never relevant or a core aspect of the series, it would require zero big rewrites to get back into the quasi middle aged period of ATLA, that's how irrelevant it is
Minor but toph becoming a cop isn't like fundamentally character breaking to me but it is stupid and boring, like if all the things she becomes a by the books stickler and politicking Captain is what she chose?
but it probably WOULD require making her somewhat morally grey*
* Typo sorry. I mean she should be an antagonist at times honestly. It would've been much more interesting if in s2 she actually sided with varrick a bit despite knowing his actual goals because he's been making large profits for her, rather than being a wholey good person who never does anything bad intentionally, be a bit more like zuko
Her just getting airbending by being really mad at amon
should have been a spiritual revelation or some kind of character growth
1- The universe agrees with her without question or discussion. Four seasons in, and she never offered a solid argument.
2- airbending Deus ex machina.
They fumbled so hard with Amon. He was the perfect foil to Korra, and his ideology wasn't completely retarded. I think it's a valid concern that maybe everyday people having superpowers is a dangerous thing. But who cares about examining that critically, let's just make Amon a hypocritical waterbender and drop the whole idea lol.
Zaheer mastering Airbending in the span of a week from within a jail cell because he read some philosophy over a decade ago*
I always assumed he also practiced airbending movements, I mean, most airbender techniques are just tai chi movements.
Eh, was she even still that annoying by then? I just remember feeling apathetic. Her worthlessness is a bigger issue. She's toned down later but remains useless and there's nothing memorable about her aside from traits we learned about in S1 that disappeared eventually.
Assami is a nothing character who has everything there to be a cool character but it probably wouldn't required making her somewhat grey
I don't even know why she was still in the group or why she considered them her friends.
Ex-boyfriend.
The girl who pretended to be your friend and stole your boyfriend.
Your ex-boyfriend's brother (I know Bolin didn't do anything bad to Asami, but it's still weird seeing them interacting).
Not to mention that she was the owner of the company now, and it made no sense to go on a trip with the team.
Everything that isn't Korra. I fucking love Korra herself, she's just surrounded by trash.
I hated it from the beginning
LOK was my first "not muh" experience. When they announced a sequel to ATLA i expected and wanted a direct sequel but with team avatar a few years older. But instead they did this weird time skip of almost a hundred years where aangs dead and all the old team are either miserable and old or dead too. And with a new cast i didnt give a rats ass about. I tried watching the first episode, hated everything about it, and never looked back besides occasionally gooning to korra lewds. Seeing everyone else eventually turn on the show i hated in the first place is just icing on the cake
Earth > Water > Fire >>>>>>>>> Change > Balance >>>>>>>>> Air >> Spirits
it's okay, these guys will save the franchise soon.
Korra as a character went from being annoying to being boring.
it was some of the flattest 'character development' I'd ever seen.
That I can't stick my dick in Korra's armpit and bust on her stupid fat tits.
The spirit world shenanigans and Wan was the most retarded shit that came out of Korra because it ruined the previous worldbuilding. It stripped all of the creepy mysticism from the original series and made the spirit world colorful fantasy land when it used to be depicted as this empty, liminal space. And yes Vaatu was probably the worst thing (amongst many) to come out of that season.
I hate that it was an animated show with a good budget and a considerable amount of talent attached that wasted it's potential continuing the worst aspects of the original series, namely catering to the squeeing fandom.
I mean the domain of the Face Stealer ought to be creepy, but it's silly to assume the entirety of the Spirit Realm would reflect it. It's not some Chinese Hell.
