Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Falcon & Winter Soldier had not been fucked over by the pandemic, which reportedly caused it to be rewritten to remove a germ warfare plot, and delayed it so it wasn't able to be the first MCU show on Disney+ as originally planned.
Obviously they were counting on that show to launch Sam as Captain America and turn him into a guy who could carry a movie. Would it have happened if WandaVision had been the second show, as they planned?
I don't think so, because I can't imagine the show being *that* much better than it is and I don't think anyone put enough effort into making us accept Sam as a worthy successor to Steve. But I never thought it would be this bad.

The entire problem stems from making Sam cap. That would never have been improved by any sort of extraneous circumstances. Marvel got way too cocky and pushed too many female and non-white leads. Anybody who doesn’t want to admit this probably thinks white men are to blame for the recent election results.

It might be a lost cause, yeah. I don't think they could really admit to themselves that the obvious choice for Steve's successor was Bucky, who has more connection to Steve and the whole Super Soldier thing, and probably has a bigger fanbase too.
What they would have had to do is really make the case that Bucky doesn't want to be Cap and that Sam is a worthier successor, but the politics of the time may have meant that they couldn't even see that they needed to make that case.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I think Cap Sam works better here than it does in comics. MCU Sam is likable, I enjoy seeing him try harder because he's not a super soldier, and I like the new mask they gave him in this film. His solo series definitely needed work though
Sebastian Stan is slightly younger and definitely the better actor of the two as well. Bucky's story would be a redemption arc and people eat those up. Then there's Bucky still having to be the Winter Soldier moniker even though that's a completely fucked up time from his life. He needed a superhero identity and Sam already had one. I think them fumbling this and Thor's character post infinity war are the two biggest fuck ups that sank the MCU long term.
I don't know if extra shots are going to save a movie that genuinely no one wants to see in the first place.
I don't know if it is having actual troubles on set. Rather they are just making a movie no one is interested in, starring a character nobody is interested in. And it will never get much from a test audience.
