Do you agree?

Do you think America is a sleeping tiger when it comes to comics? Like we could see a resurgence of original titles if the execs got their heads out of their asses?

yor.png - 1316x1001, 176.22K

Theoretically possible, but not something that seems likely.

I dunno dude I dont really care

Not for the reasons listed in that post, because the guy's stupid.
In theory the floodgates could open back up because the IPs themselves are still popular with kids. But to do so would require basically folding all of DC and Marvel as we know them and replacing them with brand new companies in all but name designed from the ground up to make comics specifically for kids, with teen and adult readers being bonuses instead of the manchild demo being the main target audience.

it's true

Don't...don't post this shit on other boards. FFS, it's bad enough Anon Babble's mods don't do anything about it, at least let it be contained there.
That said; maybe. There's no shortage of people wanting to make comics, and some sort of industry shake up is needed to bring both creators and consumers back into the fold. It would require someone with both money and vision, so who knows when it might happen.

No because the current state of the industry is heavily creator driven in its nature, the entire industry is basically a wishlist for writers and illustrators circa 1986 or so protected by desperately trying, consciously or not, to prevent executive authority ever looking at them too closely or connecting the dots between dozens of deliberately obfuscated problems because every single problem in this industry is basically entirely artificial and exists to service the continued existence of a near zero oversight work culture where you work for a couple hours once or twice a month playing with the world's biggest toybox, pretending you're Stan Lee or Steve Ditko and fighting over getting to use your favorite action figure with the other wannabes, collecting paychecks for almost nothing, and when the boss asks why you barely make any money you shrug and say "Sorry boss, natural market forces, nothing doing" while quietly pushing your artificially fucked distribution and market presence, low quality and low production rate product, deliberate antagonism of the audience, and refusal to market off to one side and make sure none of the dozens of comparable industry examples that don't have this or that problem are ever seen together without at least a figleaf of "East Asian Magic Markets" or "Magazines are *totally* different from comics in terms of production and distribution" to deflect scrutiny.

If you fixed all that there wouldn't be a fucking industry anymore because you'd literally have to purge almost its entire institutional base and 99% of the creators in it. You'd have to start over with....what, maybe 10 or so writers, all of 5 artists, and begging Jim Shooter to come out of semi-retirement along with whatever indie hopefuls would maybe be serviceable before going deep in the hole rebuilding the infrastructure and institutional knowledge?

not when all the stuff its owned by corpos that drive away anyone with self respect after a while.

you can be a great writer and excited to do spider-man then you are meet with all the limitations on it by a completely retarded editorial theme that you will fuck off and do your own thing or just fuck off forever from the medium.

i am more excited for people who rather want to do comics their own way than for ips, comics can be big but they definitely can't be big two lame-os.

there are a lot of things that no one on this board wants to admit

DIRECT adaptations

take a current comic run, and make it a cartoon. thats it. now ideally they would change the way they write books knowing they will be adapted because a lot of comics are steeped in continuity or hand wavy bullshit retcons etc but at the end of the day comics need direct adaptations like invincible not just for comics but for animation. its such a simple fix yet american companies refuse to do it. the closest we get are the DC direct to video movies.

and those SUCK most of the fun by trying to change the source material endings or fit them into their own weird universe.
such a shame.

DIRECT adaptations

Cultural differences are at play, weeb. Just doing things 1:1 ain't gonna fly.

Burn marvel and Dc to the ground

am I the only one that feels like writing good is harder than drawing good

Yeah dude let's give artists more freedom to jerk off blacks and trannies. That'll totally kill Japan.

You fags overrate manga.

OLD American comics are as good as anything Japan EVER produced.

How old?

depends. where's the money to be made?

So what’s the source of the OP image over there?

Yeah, like amerilards having stupid ass union laws that bloat productions with unnecessary roles which can only be justified by adding more shit to the story

I think the creative capacity is there but it'd have to be part of some greater movement or shift towards a medium people are drifting towards, something like a contemporary version of the early 00s webcomic moment.

Not in this era at least. We'd have to mass fire all the retards at every level to even get a chance.

Writing isn't very hard. You just need to read a lot of books, pay attention to how people (including yourself) think and feel, and be curious. If you can't do that, then of course it's going to be hard to produce anything decent. Why else are there so many horrible writers?

In all seriousness, the American comics industry is fucked and has been fucked for decades. It needs to die so it can be reborn.

America will collapse into civil war long before the systemic issues that led to its popular culture rotting fix themselves.

No Disney unfucking itself and going back to hecking cute and wholesome 50s cartoons, only Neo-Nazis burning down Disneyland and murdering the employees because it’s “woke” and they’re all working for the Jews, or something.

Style is the biggest hurdle to overcome.
I will choose to read a manga crime or romance or historical fiction or whatever because in manga form, the storytelling feels different and looks different than a liveaction movie or TV show. Even the structure of dialog feels unique.
American attempts at genre comics, generally, feel more like lesser movies. Art styles that don't make an impression- either too realistic or too crude and simplistic. Writing that reeks of wanting to be a movie.

That comic looks like shit though.

This is a pretty recent problem for the west, mostly caused by failed Hollywood writers getting involved with comics.

Manga is structured differently due to having its roots in kamishibai theater and woodblock prints. The emphasis is on the art, with dialogue being used in service to deliver the art. Not to mention the nuances of the Japanese language-culture.

The closest equivalent we have to manga in the west - in terms of spirit - would be Sunday comics.

Manga is structured differently due to having its roots in kamishibai theater and woodblock prints.

sounds genuinely interesting, where can I learn more about this

literallly everytime japan does anything better than the west, a bunch of westoids starts claiming japan is cheating
what's anooying is they pretend to be progressive when they are sinply racist or nationalist
you can see ''muh japanese work culture'' has been used by them
reddit is full of that too

Transformers

You're no different Anon

Sharty has been a detriment to life itself

It really isn't recent because even most old classic comics aren't really engaging in terms of style or writing, either.I wish I could be more engaged, but I can read 60's and 70's manga and be more interested because it feels unique and the art style looks charming and after decades I just can't say there's many American comics that hold up the same way or remain unique feeling reads.
Like 70's non-cape books and 80's indies just don't hold up for the most part. Not enough to make an impression.A lot of 90's and 2000's indies aren't great either. and even when the art is technically good they just don't stand out as comic characters for the most part.

Also worth looking into is Kishotenketsu, which is the term used for East Asian story structure. It's why Japanese and Chinese fiction "feels" differently in terms of plotting. Without info dumping too much, it's fundamentally different from the western A vs B (obstacle vs intent) framework of writing due to lacking "conflict". Not conflict in that there is no internal or even external conflict WITHIN the story, but that there is no struggle of Chaos vs Order. Rather, Kishotenketsu is about Order existing, then Chaos shakes things up, only for Order to re-orient itself and exist but having changed.

It's why I brought up the Sunday comics comparison. It's also why Japan loves American sitcoms so much. The emotional climaxes are built around "random weird stuff just happens" and "sometimes nothing happens". Slice of Life fiction best exemplifies this. Or comedy 4-koma.

Implying i don't want Hasbro's death too

thanks lad, for some personal projects I’ve been figuring that it’s be good to actually learn historical context for art forms because I never actually went to art school (figured that it was a scam desu)

Western story structure

A cat is stuck in a tree!

A Firefighter climbs the tree and grabs the cat

The cat is saved and is in the arms of its owner!

Eastern story structure

A cat is in a tree

A firefighter then climbs the tree

He then grabs the cat

The cat is then returned to its owner

The difference might not seem obvious, but it's subtle. The former has more stress/anxiety behind it: the implication is that the cat being stuck in a tree is unnatural in the first place. It is a problem that MUST be solved. The latter lacks this stress because it's viewed as something that naturally exists. Of course the cat is in a tree, that's just what happens. No big deal.

Art school is a scam if you're interested in art history, just take some community college classes for that instead.

Something else worth studying is the "spiral" framework of kishotenketsu, related to kabuki and kamishibai theater. In the four-act structure, each individual act (with the exception of the fourth) can be viewed in a vacuum by itself....until the fourth act arrives, which then puts the first three acts into a NEW context and establishes a firm continuity and emotional throughline forward from start to finish.

Ever wonder why mystery stories are beloved in Japan? That's why. Big questions are established, then gradually info is revealed until we get a sudden change and then a big twist that puts everything into a new light. Very similar stuff.

Lmao
The Anon Babblecksuckers defend "the diversity of artistic styles" like:
and regarding comics, if poorly drawn childish garbage (as if they were illustrations from educational textbooks) like dogman or smiles are the standard, then it's no coincidence that M/a/ngas like Chainsaw Man or Demon Slayer dominate sales and are the topic of conversation.

I never actually went to art school (figured that it was a scam desu)

Most of them are, and even the ones that aren't suffer from the college structure. I went to a good art school(now no longer giving out degrees) that had successful artists including and old pro from the days before the comics industry got all fucked up. And honestly, that part, getting one on one time with people who actually know their shit? Invaluable. being surrounded by other people making art was also really great as well, but my man, find you a mentor if you can. There's no need to go to art school if you find someone to take you under their wing.
Also fuck you OP, you summoned the Anon Babble troll. Maybe Anon Babble's mods will prove less incompetent and ban the stupid fucker.

work culture

How about monthly and biweekly magazines which make for most of the manga? Or doujinshi? That faggot thinks the west has invented inide comics when japan has one of the biggest indie manga events in the world every summer?

maybe it could've been better but it's like part of american culture that products for kids easily turn to shit due to dumb greedy corporations.
atari fucking died for it. american toys are usually shit. xbox has been strugling since forever.
america is great at many other things so i don't think that's a big deal.

you summoned the Anon Babble troll

He can't stop thinking about Anon Babbleck.
Could be, actually.

No. It's over. It's dead. Western comics died in the 90s. Western animation died in the 70s. The golden age was the 40s. The silver age was the 50s. Bronze age was the 60s. It has gotten worse & lazier, & with all the leftists & sjws that have infultrated the industry, you can bet the quality will get worst. Only HitlerAI can save the industry no.

Nah shit got good again once the feminist schlock took a faaar backseat.

Shit has never and will never be good. It's always been low-hanging fruit.

no because execs are not willing to allow new properties to exist. they will continue to pay for more and more reboots and re-imagining of the same capeshit comics over and over.

just do it like anime!

Anime for the longest time wasn’t 1:1 faithful, you dumb fuck. And you really think adults are going to just watch whatever new cartoon because it’s a comic adaptation? Come the fuck on.

Japanese work culture is just exploitative “do overtime without compensation”. It’s so sick that people literally die from overwork and the overtime laws are a joke.

you can be a greater writer and excited to do spider-man

This already shows one of the reasons why manga works better than comics nowadays.
Why the fuck are good writers picking up a 60 year old IP to write about instead of making their own?
Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, One Piece, and many many others wouldn't exist if their creators had to continue someone else's creation.

names no less than 5 trash manga

If it gives us better art then any amount of artists consumed into a meat grinder is worthwhile.

It’s not. And now Japan regularly outsources its work to Korea and China because they can’t get younger people to come in and animate due to how poor the wages and working conditions are.

Why did you switch from manga to anime lol? Also Japan has been outsourcing its anime since the 70s(and america since the 60s)

I'm just giving examples of the most well-known mangas to illustrate my point. I could've talked about Kakukaku Shikajika to say that even an autobiography manga has space in the industry and will win awards, instead of "X-Men #666 - Jean Grey is now fucking Beast and Scott can only watch"

He could name 99% of all manga and it would fit since only a select few franchises work like western capeshit. Your favorite manga probably exists because the author was not forced to rewrite the same franchise again and again.

Just highlighting the issues that their work culture creates with related field. It grinds people down to the point very few l want to work in the industry anymore that forces them to outsource even more than before because no young people are around to replace the old work force.

Most original manga is trash too. Full of the same boring tropes and gimmicks.

Just highlighting the issues that their work culture creates with related field

But we were talking about manga? Which manga are outsourced exactly?

Most original manga is trash too

Most of everything is trash faggot. You are not saying anything new. What matters is that all the good stuff is allowed to exist. A lot of good manga would have not existed if manga worked like western comics.

It's still better than writing about the same story for 60+ years, even fucking soiling the good bits by retarded drama that it's only been added recently, like all the Paul/MJ shit that Peter has now to deal with

The point was Japan having excessive workloads that is detrimental to the industry. It’s been happening in animation for ages and causing issues like not having enough domestic workers forcing outsourcing. In manga you have industry veterans needing to take extensive and frequent hiatuses because their health breaks down from overworking.

No it’s not. Finding manga that’s actually well written and doesn’t shit the bed after one volume is hard work.

Japan has been outsourcing some of the works to other countries for more than 30 years. It used to be mainly Korea but nowadays SEAsia too.
That's literally the only reason why the west can make tons of fake anime by hiring Koreans now.

The diffrence is Japs usually do key animations themselves.
You anti-anime retards really keep telling the same cope and lies to yourselves. Embarrassing.

Finding manga that’s actually well written and doesn’t shit the bed after one volume is hard work

the same shit can be said about every Marvel/DC comic book being published today

Why do the villains here look like from Megaman?
