To be fair, before Gwen started learning magic there was an episode where she used the Hex's staff even though it is explicitly stated that only a master magician is capable of using it, it is reasonable to think that Gwen's ability for magic should have an explanation besides hard work, the problem is that the explanation they chose is boring, kind of stupid and seems like it was made by someone who didn't like or hadn't seen the original series.

Calling it a last-minute addition isn't entirely accurate, the show has been teasing that idea since Season 1, and Gwen was already using spells in the early episodes of Season 3, but even if it were true, it's no excuse for Alien Force to waste the opportunity to fix the problems that magic had in the original series and instead take away everything that made it interesting.
