Go woke go bro-

I’ll be taking that, chud. Thanks for the purchase!

Can California just fully burn down already.

Okay so hear me out.
Move out of the state.

Since we can't have your money we're just going to steal it from you.

Oh you mean like WB using films for tax write-offs?

Thank fuck I don't live in shitholefornia. You got me fucked up if I'm gonna pay 4000 a month to live in a shoebox while being treated like shit. Let the industry die. There's no saving it. 90 percent of the "subsidy" is gonna end up buying an executives daughter's mansion.

Yeah, but now WB gets to do BOTH with their California productions

this won't affect you if you don't live in California. Either way, I'd much rather my money goes to fund animation than tax breaks for the rich or buying armored vehicles for the police.

I’d rather not be FORCED to subsidize animation that only appeals to a teeny crowd who can’t support it.
You want my money, cater to me.

A third of the state's budget comes from federal funds. All Americans are getting ripped off, not just the ones living in Cali.

Have you even read it? It's only statewide

You still lose money from tax write offs. It’s lot like you make a profit from it. It’s just reducing the loss.

I’m being financially violated by the very thing that infests what I love. The tragic part is I knew the bubble would burst because the people who like this shit are tiny and unengaged, but now the state is turning me into a paypig to artificially prop up something that by all accounts should die.

He thinks that money isn't going to some producer's back pocket

You know, you can donate YOUR money to indie producers. There's not a damn thing on Earth stopping you.

the corporation whose job it is to make movies has to take a loss on the movie they made because they decided not to release it

It shouldn't be my fucking problem as a taxpayer regardless

Bro just donate to these guys who are literally just doing the same thing TV studios are doing but the characters are more woke!

You guys will get it one day.

No Thanks.gif - 383x338, 723.89K

Everything made with non-consensual funds should be legal to pirate.

I'll just steal my money back!

the solution isn't to simply stop making animated movies and cartoons so fucking boring and maybe people will go see them

Hollywood, take notes. Here's what you do:

take risks

allow more creative freedom

stop meddling with creators' visions, adding unnecessary shit that turns audiences away, and making everything bland to appease the lowest-common denominator

stop sanitizing every cartoon you make to the point where kids know it's just lame ass shit compared to internet stuff

make stuff cool again, like actually try for once to make a character that people want on a t-shirt

Pretty sure you're gonna get taxed by both.
So you want them to donate to indy animators while also getting taxed by corprate cartoons?

I thought the tax money was for indie projects too.

and I'd rather not be FORCED to give my money away so people who have more money than they can spend in several lifetimes don't have to pay their fair share.
At least with the cartoons, there's a slim chance I might actually like the outcome.

No my point was if anon thought funding other people's animation was a good thing, he could donate his own money instead of people being taxed

who are these people you speak of?

TEXAS DOES THE SAME THING YOU DUMB FAGGOT

I'm one of the people working on a lot of those indie productions, but the industry is in a tailspin. I'd rather more efforts be made to at least TRY to hire more real animators than resorting to all AI slop everything.

Should we spend money on fire prevention?

No, this is more important.

Hollywood is the last industry that needs taxpayers to help them.
Tell Zaslav to take a 80% pay cut, he can make 10 million and still survive, I'm sure.

so really what you want is other people's tax dollars going to you.

Well it isn't. The way tax write offs work is they can reduce the amount of tax the person or company pays the government. If you actually care you can search this stuff and understand it real fast. But you probably don't. You care just enough to whine but not enough to know what you are whining about.

I may be stupid but so is this practice. I can't really defend it.

not that anon but what does write off have to do with my taxes going to someone's shitty cartoon. You're still paying some tax money.

California is a net contributor to federal revenue, anon. If you want fairness, you should be giving more of your money to them since they currently give more than they get back.

Except that article points out that California has the opposite of a monopoly and almost all the work on these kinds of projects are done in foreign countries and Republican states that already provide these kinds of tax breaks.

This
Make shit people want to see faggots.

unless those tax dollars are going to indie productions somehow (they won't) then they won't be going to me.

Wait. Is it a tax break or government funding?

Hollywood has been getting taxpayer money from various states and countries to incentivise them to work on productions in their jurisdictions for decades, anon. This is a common practice across all industries because governments want to attract businesses.

then what do you want? Tax dollars going to big corporation animation?

Tax breaks and government funding are functionally the same thing, which is why the article also questions whether the funding cap will actually end up being budgeted for. It's more money for whatever the target group is through either payment or tax not collected.

Modern cartoons are so bad you have to be forced at gunpoint to buy them

Thanks Hollywood!

But in this case it's a tax break rather than grants.

I want more animation period. More indie? Great. More mainstream? Great. As long as it isn't AI slop, I'm in. I think animation should be much more prevalent and it fucking sucks that shows keep getting canceled early, shelved, and all the bullshit that went on with the WB films...
I think it's one of the most artistic mediums employing a ridiculous range of artisans across disciplines and despite going through a bit of a slump at the moment, I applaud efforts to help keep the medium alive.

Bailing industries out of their worst habits doesn’t improve the situation anon. A crash would have been better.

Bailing industries out of their worst habits doesn’t improve the situation

and yet the same thing has been going on for decades with the housing industry, the automotive industry, the airline industry, the tech industry...
At least in this case, something I give a shit about is getting a leg up. Who knows how it will work out. Maybe the same corrupt shit will happen that went on with the other industries too, but I think it's stupid to turn a blind eye to the majority of other industries that have gotten bailed out throughout history and then suddenly get mad when an industry we're supposed to be on this board to celebrate might get the same thing.

If it makes you feel any better, there's nearly no chance this bill is actually going to fucking pass, so there's that.

that's not what a bailout is. the animation industry isn't going bankrupt, it's just doing its work in other places. this kind of tax incentive is intended to attract business, not prevent bankruptcy. it's a kind of state competition, like general business tax rates.

How are they the same thing. One is the government simply withholding taxes on a production. The other is the government actively giving them other peoples money.
I wouldn't give a shit about tax breaks as long as my taxes aren't going to them.

Bad for the “pay us more” crowd, if work would have gotten out of California you’d get a pay bump by moving to a sane state.

again, you could donate money to animation productions if you care so much.

from the perspective of a government budget, that is. it's just moving dollars around in the economy. this is the government deciding it's not going to collect certain moneys and will account for that in the budget.

The state’s new bill not only increases the credit from its current 20-25%, but also expands the cap on the credit program from $330 million to $750 million annually.

So this is the amount the state is willing to forgo for this budget measure etc.

Okay, but from the perspective of the taxpayer one is their money going to some animated slop and the other isn't. Big difference.

Correct. This isn't directly funding anything; it's encouraging businesses to start more projects and do them there. A grants program to help get projects off the ground would look different and would need some kind of management group within a department.

I want more animation period. More indie? Great. More mainstream? Great.

hope this helps.

Like Trump with tariffs.

I don't want people's money going to someone else's hobby

Either trolling or stupid. That's not how tariffs work.

N-NO, SHUT UP, THAT'S BAAAAASEEEEEEDDD!!

no, not like that at all.
all the homos learned a new word this week

This. Rich jewish cocksuckers ruined the country.

sweet, then don't donate to indie productions.

don't want my tax dollars going to it either

then move out of California

and you wonder why your shit industry is dying.

Forcing me to pay for calart loretoon flops is straight up evil.

I'd much rather my money goes to tax breaks for the rich than tax breaks for the rich

Smartest american.

do you know how the bill actually works? Productions would actually have to be produced primarily in California (as opposed to being farmed out to 3rd world countries) to qualify for the tax break.

Kids would rather watch Jack Black shaking his fat aging body while dramatically naming Minecraft things instead of OUR slop, so now we’re just gonna take your money :)

Fucking hilarious that CHICKEN JOCKEY bailed Warner Bros out of another bankruptcy, those #AnimationIsCinema fags must be fuming.

When is Disney going back to their bread and butter? For the longest time they were the little girl fantasy/wish fulfillment company, making tons of princess junk because every little girl from the dawn of civilization to about 2000 AD wanted to be a princess, and then they wanted to be a celebrity, and now they want to be tiktok stars, meanwhile this crop of Disney talent seems to have drastically overestimated their own influence and they're pushing "if you try hard enough you can be just like Hillary Clinton or the CEO of Walgreens!"

Congratulations kiddo, now ypu know what a tax is.

who would have thought back then that every single person in the world would have seen nearly every inch of Miley Cyrus's naked body just a few years after the show ended?
