It was only successful for 2010s Cartoon Network standards. Like how the Tracey Ullman Show was considered "successful" for FOX in the late 80s but in actuality no one really cares about it.
You never know what to expect. One episode could be Finn suffering from depression for no reason and another episode could be a psychological horror movie about a deer and the next could be romance and the next could be an ice king episode. They just got to do whatever the hell they wanted because it was a weird show and only cost like $100,000/episode.
