My nephew's only video game console is an iPad. His mom is quite impatient and not tech literate, so she doesn't know anything about video games. He installs something and she doesn't care. He's super into "My Singing Monsters" and he showed me his collection. His mom mentioned how she bought him some $20 monster that sings and he proudly showed it off. There was a kind of sadness in my mind, where I just felt like he was engaging with video games in the worst, consumerism kind of way with his mom having zero interest and just hitting "buy" button to satisfy him.
I showed him Cuphead and played co-op with him. He struggled for a little while, but slowly started to get it and get the hand-eye coordination for it. Now everytime I see him, he asks if we can play that cup cartoon game. I'm happy there's a game he gets to enjoy and that I get to talk about with him, but it kind of saddens me that this is like, a rarity for him. I grew up with a NES and me and my older sister played Contra all the time.

I don't know jackshit about the game other than him showing me the island with his collectibles. I assume it's like every other mobile game where you're just upgrading things, waiting for timers to end, and hitting a "collect" button multiple times a day with the option to spend money in order to negate timers.
Wouldn't something like Nexomon infinitely satisfy that collecting urge in a more engaging way? I feel like there's no mobile game that cannot be a hundred times outshined by a console/PC game. They're all just like, the idea of a of game instead of real games.
