From what I recall, TMNT was doing so well that 4kidz allowed the team freedom to do whatever they pleased, and the results speaks for itself. A lot of fans contribute the episode, and other dark topics of the season, as to why season 5 was straight to DVD, and season 6 gave us the more kid friendly Fast Forward
admittedly they kinda didn't since all this and that episode in particular never aired in the US.
that said, i think its cool they took that risk at all and told such a dark and grotesque story, body horror arcs in western animation is so rare so i can appreciate that.
