It's only good compared to the current ASM (although ASM is slowly getting better under Kelly). On its own, USM is probably one of the worst Hickman's comics ever, it's only been a little over a year and it's already a shitshow. I mean, Hickman always gets lost in his own ideas and plot devices at some point, I liked how someone compared him to Lindelof and Moffat here on Anon Babble last year regarding the habit of never finding a proper resolution to whatever story he's building up, but usually that happens in the 3rd or 4th year of the run, not the 2nd.

Hickman should never have been put on USM. He did a good job writing the Ultimate Invasion mini and the Ultimate Universe one-shot, he's a great world builder, with all his maps, charts, graphs, etc., but instead of writing an ongoing he should have just become some kind of curator over the whole new Ultimate Universe, or even an editor, and just set the overall direction of that project and let other writers write everything, including the Spider-Man book. His dialogs still kinda suck btw, even after 15+ years in comics, his characters still talk just like they did in FF. It's hard to explain what exactly is wrong with his dialogs, it's probably that all the characters always speak monotonously, robotically, unnaturally, like some LLMs from 2023, lol. Not like real people. It's not as bad as Bendis' speech bubbles, but still not good.

I think it's good and enjoyable and interesting, but the month-to-month in-universe thing just isn't ideal.

As someone who got into comics via adaptations and only started reading comics themselves around 2012-13 bendis ultimate spider man was a huge love of mine and is "my" spider man. It's way better than hickmans run imo. I like what Hickman is doing and it feels refreshing when it's main competition is ASM which is shit marriage or not. That being said there's a lot of stuff I find boring or off putting.

For example the Ben and Jonah plot takes too much screen time early on. Recently it's been better and not taking as much real estate
