I think they just did not care to read any comic books, many movie writers probably also got their job becsuse of nepotism. If they cannot read a few comic books then I don't see how they got to be blockbuster budget writers/directors without nepotism.

Hollywood doesn't care about comic book stories, they think it's for kids. They can't conceive that the stories have some serious background with consistent storylines. A few members of the crew and cast do, but most don't care. It's just another job for them.
It was an okay duology especially at the time, but doom was still bad in it.
I hope the new movie will be a lot better, but seeing latino Reed and Ironman doom I have my doubts
