Unironically just started a rewatch, and I think s1 is great but really s2 and up is where it truly becomes "gumball". S1 feels a bit like a pilot season which inherently has a level of nostalgia and comfy but it feels a bit more like other series but after that it goes balls to the walls and truly begins to have it's own style.
Blame Ben for being unable to come up with anything for most of the cast to do other than just stare at Gumball's misfortune or ensure further torment. Well, at least until S2 rolled around.

They don’t look bad. Hardly anything is actually objectively bad really. If the S2 designs were in a vacuum where S1 never existed, then there’d be almost no complaints whatsoever.
It’s just that their predecessors had more expression to them. Which I get S2’s designs were probably done as a cost-cutting/time saving measure because they are the faces of the show that take up tons of time. Make a sacrifice here for other things to get the time and money to flourish, but Gumball as a show never flourished much so it’s like “eh, it’s an attempt”.
Go watch the 4 5 and 6 seasons and you will see, faggot.
