most likely they know they have to share the rights, if valve comes with a "everything you make is MINE!" people who are fans of the guy work will side with him and boycott the movie, valve is still a little smart to know this and certainly won't pull a nintendo on the guy.

At least a trilogy. I wouldn't be surprised if the first one was a stand alone with a lot of sequel bait for a second that is set up for at least a trilogy once the first is proven to succeed.
