Will Hawkeye ever be cool again? I liked the West Coast Avengers and Solo Avengers series a lot as a teenager then he dropped his costume then Jeremy Renner ruined him completely.
Will Hawkeye ever be cool again...
Eventually
Jeremy Renner ruined him completely.
How
Seconding this because Hawkeye has for the most part been a complete non-factor in the MCU. Renner's face is not the problem with the character.
Will Hawkeye ever be cool again?
He wasn't cool to begin with!
DOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!
Nope
Very few people are cool now.
How do you modernize his costume without making it boring?
Jeremy Renner ruined him completely.
Matt Fraction ruined him completely
Um........I like him in Marvel Rivals???
I'd argue that part of his current rut is just because of that. He did nothing in Avengers so normalfags all just saw him as "the joke archer who won't use a gun like a normal person"
Then we also had Fraction's run making him a schlubby joke character who wears a t-shirt to work while shilling Kate the whole time
blame supernatural
again
Rivals did him pretty well, costume aside
is hawkeye even cool? Mostly an X-book reader but I saw picrel and for the first time in my life considered checking him out
It used to be established that he was trained by Captain America and was worthy of being a leader. But the MCU removed the link to Cap to make him the Purple Arrow and not Hawkeye.
He has elite level hand to hand combat skills plus he's an archer. He works best as a team leader.
He's the hothead of the team who had his arrogance and ego tempered by working with Captain America, who then also gets the responsibility of leading his own team with the WCA
He's fun
He's cool, what are you on?
I always thought EMH did a pretty good job
Never knew he was leader material, 90% of hawkeye I have seen was in the mcu and even there he's hardly explored
Gotcha, to be honest I have always just assumed the wca was shit after I read their horrible horrible crossover with excalibur
WCA is real good shit. Not just for Hawkeye too, Hank Pym gets a lot of good shit too
is hawkeye even cool?
Very.
Mostly an X-book reader
Don't take this directed at you personally but man is my stance on X-readers and their disassociation with the rest of marvel ever more and more proven.
I don't. Because it doesn't need to be. Quit acting like you're embarrassed of your medium.
What part needs to be "modernised"
I mean that sounds like a pretty fair stance. I don't primarily read superhero comics but X-Men was the thing that made me start and the wealth of online stuff about the Claremont run made jumping into it's roots fairly easy.
Aside from Miller's Daredevil it seems like most of the other properties don't have such definitive classic eras, or at least not widely popular ones. I've got Peter David's Hulk, Walt Simonson's Thor, and Roger Stern's Avengers on my big to-read list, but it took a bit of digging to know that those were one's to check out
Should at least give him white superhero eyes
Hawkeye got fucked over by a variety of factors.
>His entire arc as a character pretty much peaked/resolved itself by the early 90s. He was a hot headed young hero who constantly butted heads with his surrogate dad Captain America, until he grew up and became a responsible leader. And Marvel fucking HATED this, hence why Busiek kicked him off of the Avengers and put him in Thunderbolts after his attempt to regress him ala Justice and Firestar pissed off fans during the first year of Heroes Return.
>His origin is based on carnival/carnie culture and that was outdated by the 90s. Hence why modern versions starting with the Ultimates made him a SHIELD agent, while stripping him of his hot headed personality because Clint can't be a dick to the Marty Stu that is the Samuel L Jackson Nick Fury.
>Adding to this, there are those who want him to be a super edgy version of Green Arrow for Marvel (IE the guys who wrote his post-WCA mini-series, Austen, Bendis, Loeb, etc) who kills and basically is an asshole's asshole.
>But the big one is that editorial since the rise of Bill Jemas and Joe Quesada just straight up HATE Clint. Because Clint was in the Thunderbolts, a book Quesada despised, he was deemed "old fashion" and Tom Brevoort, when Thunderbolts got canceled to a huge backlash, basically bet his career and fiefdom on a Hawkeye ongoing soothing over the backlash only for it to flop because Fabian Nicieza didn't give a shit by that point as he basically was more interested in running Cable/Deadpool instead. The book was a huge flop and combined with the character assassination that Austen did to Clint, forced Brevoort to bring on Bendis and let him destroy the Avengers (and kill off Clint) to save his job and fiefdom.
Only problem is what happens to Wanda and Viz.
I hate to give Bendis any credit, but his post-resurrection Clint wasn't terrible outside of not letting him be Hawkeye.
Didn't know about all that other stuff though, that sucks
Still the best Hawkeye.
I thought Old Man Hawkeye was an enjoyable series.
If you're looking for recs then Stern and DeFalco's back to back runs on Amazing Spider-Man should definitely go on that list
Nah, being able to see his eyes made him feel more realistic. EMH Hawkeye had a punk attitude about him, white eyes would've made him look too appealing.
That was his best outfit. It doesn't necessarily make sense or transition well to film but it was cool
I'm gonna give you a black eye.
Gruenwald Cap is great. He's on the book for a good long time too. He starts to run out of ideas kind of near the end but that's like after 10 years of stories.
Hawkeye was NEVER cool.
he was fucking RAD.
Appreciate it, not really asking for recs because it will take me forever to read the stuff I already want to, but if Stern's Avengers ends good enough I will check it out
Long runs are the best for letting you really *get* a character, provided they have decent direction at least. What I really wish is that there were more super long independent comics like Cerebus, Spawn, Savage Dragon, Elfquest, etc. Granted I've only read Cerebus of those, but massive runs are where comics really feel epic in the sort of scope I appreciate in the Marvel universe
It's not like Hawkeye's always had the white eyes anyway
Cool doesn’t exist anymore, it’s one more thing we collectively forgot how to make, like socks that last more than two trips through the dryer
