Fanart is almost always a slap in the face to the original creator. If some character is loved part of the reason will be the characters design. These characters do not need changing. Trying to force your own design changes onto these characters is no different from race swaps. Keep it to yourself. All fanart should be on-model but with the artists style added on without completely changing the characters design. Create your own character instead of trying to change someone else's character. BE CREATIVE WITHOUT RUINING SOMEONE ELSES CREATION. TOTAL OFF-MODEL FANART DEATH

When I first encountered this take I actually thought it was trolling for a bit. My mind’s eye is so accustomed to flexibility in design that I couldn’t fathom treating a character like a physical object with rules.
Three people can draw a portrait of, I dunno, Stallone, and as long as it captures some side of him those are all windows into Stallone.
Even heavily interpretive fanart is valid because it contains a perspective on the character in question.

The one on the right doesn't even look like Sally, it only has her color scheme. If you want to make off-model stuff, at least try to keep the face intact
