Yes, he certainly seems very ancient. The übermensch that is Holden perhaps shows a reconciliation between man's mind and primal violence, making him a "new man". That, or he himself lacks the filters (laws, rules, morality...) that elevates the violent beast to a human, macking him and what he represents incomplete/evil. The Judge is a devil that desires and celebrates mankind's abandonment of their morality and virtues. He triumphs totally in the end when he draws the Kid back into depravity despite him being a reconciled holy man that has tried to put his past behind him.

The kid is the coin the Judge has thrown, always meant to go back to the same point, no matter the length of the string. He was trapped by the Judge, just like the man who's portrait had been sketched. The man failed to become great and find his own meaning, and was consumed by Holden because of it.
