Not a character or change, but I had to let out that "armamageddon" carried over well into Spanish

Wolverine

Roy Daddy-Do goes hard

Bombón, Burbuja y Bellota.
Hank Hill was Héctor Reyes. They made their last name being the King part instead of the Hill.

They translated "bub" as "papi" in Spanish for D&W.

I always though changing Hoss' name from Hoss Delgado to Rene Gado was the coolest shit ever because that's the spanish word for renegade

Spongebob is Bob the Sponge

This isn't really a name-change though, is it.

The Hungarian dub for The Flintstones did a few interesting changes so the names would rhyme

Fred — Frédi

What are Looney Tunes characters called there?

Not official, but people in Quebec are retarded and boomers today still think it's Dark Vader

dsf.jpg - 1280x720, 74.69K

Elmer Fudd = Elmer Fjot

Bubbles became Beauty

Buttercup became Sweety

Just the ones that come to mind immediately.

translating names

Why?

Does Looney Tunes even work in foreign countries? its full of puns and references.

Yeah, it works pretty well. Ofcourse sometimes we change the jokes to do something else, but mostly it works well. Also Looney Tunes is alot of slapstick physical humor, which is very universal. In general Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Woody Woodpecker are quite beloved here.

That list has sole weird entries. Joker is only called rigolar in the scoobidoo crossover, probably because nobody really cared about super heroes there at the time. And im pretty sure there is no french translation of king of the hill.
Talking about scooby doo, vella is called vera, and shaggy is called sammy.

Lobezno

Hulka

Agallas, Eustaquio Habichuela

Burbuja, Pétalo y Cactus

Kasnatov, Dra. Espanto, General Cicatriz

And many others I don't remember or can't be bothered to remember. Plus a lot of Latin American changes from older dubs we imported.

Bob the sponge?

SpongeBob is SpongeBob.
Pinky and the Brain are Mignolo e Prof.
The Powerpuff Girls are Lolly, Dolly and Molly.
Chip and Dale are Cip e Ciop (pronounced cheep eh chohp).
Darth Vader is Dart Fener.
Dr Claw is Boss Artiglio (pronounced sorta like bohss artilyo, Boss Claw; the sound made by gli, a soft L, is very difficult for foreigners to even hear correctly nevermind pronounce and it sounds like a Y to them*)
Eeyore is Ih-Oh, which is closer to the intended pronunciation of Eeyore than how Americans say it lmao
Hank Hill is Hank Hill
Scrooge McDuck is Paperone (pahpehrohneh, literally Big Duck)
Joker is Joker
King Dedede is Re Dedede (reh dehdehdeh)
Brock is Brock but he's from Plumbeopoli instead of Pewter City.
Lupin is Lupin
Wreck-It Ralph is Ralph Spaccatutto (Ralph Breakseverything)
Moana is probably Moana. I'm not sure. I've never seen it in Italian.
Courage is Leone il cane fifone (Lion, the cowardly dog), Scooby is Sansone and Smurfs are Puffi
* this is the reason yeismo is so prevalent in New World Spanish, too; the Spaniards got a whole bunch people, forced them to learn Spanish but like Italian gli, the Spanish soft L is lost on foreign ears

I actually did localisation work for Italian and detailed it on Anon Babble. Lemme see if I can find the posts on warosu. Basically, references that we don't have we just swap for ones that we do. I've never seen Me, Myself and Irene in English but I'm sure that there no references to Kotetsu Jeeg in the original. You don't understand the immense cultural phenomenon Jeeg is in Italy. So whatever they said in the American version must've been something we, as a culture, just have no frame of reference for so the localiser decided to reference something we do have instead. And that's the sort of things I did, too.

Henri Hill

haha thats so cute

>Scrooge McDuck is Balthazar Picsou

That's the most standout one to me. That's just a whole-ass different name

BOB ESPONJA

Fredo Godofredo!

I love the Italian Duck comics

Soul

I find the inverse interesting to like how the Asterix characters get translated from French to English so Idefix becomes Dogmatix, Panoramix is Getafix and lot of others that are to much for my small Aussie mind

that swedish place

The Phantom has a literal translation of his name (Fantomen), but he was briefly called Dragos in one newspaper as they mistook him for Mandrake.
Gold/Silver age Batman was Läderlappen, named after en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespertilionidae current bats is just Batman.
Superman is generally known as Stålmannen, the steel-man. Spidey is Spindelmannen, literally spider-man.
Dilbert initially became Herbert, I think it's a reference to a classic TV series en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_&_Herbert . Dogbert became Hundbert. Smaller changes were Ratbert to Råttbert and Catbert to Kattbert. Wally, Alice and Asok kept their names. Current publications just keep the original english names.
Calvin & Hobbes is Kalle & Hobbe.
Valerian & Laureline is Linda & Valentin (ladies first).
Garfield is Gustaf.

Daffy Duck = Daffy And

Daffy and?
daffu and who?

So the rhyming nature of the dub even affected the MC names, sorta

Bombón, Burbuja y Bellota.

At least they respect their names starting with B, unlike Petalo, Burbuja y Cactus

They called him Frank in our dub. And Sheen was renamed Max

In LatAm, 12 Oz Mouse was called Raton Esponja (Sponge Mouse)

"Are you on the bullet train to smartsville? Or are you taking the slow pony to the Rubber forest?"

the hat and hair bow on their names

Cute!

"Let me tell you something about stepping in someone else's corn flakes... It's a weird way to eat corn flakes."

You will change the names back to their actual, American-given names or you will be tariffed into poverty.

Americans can't deal with their own poverty lmao
