In my teens I played a browser-based RPG with a forum and had more in-game currency than I needed so I ended up setting up a shop where people could swear an oath where they'd get a pitiful sum of currency in exchange for their real life eternal soul. I got like ten of them. It'll be really interesting to find out how that works if I die and it turns out there really is a market for souls.

Shot in the dark theory but:

Alastor was probably intended for Zoophobia as an anti-heroic figure

"Roo" (Eve/root of all evil) looks to have been a repurposed Zoophobia antagonist (an Australian animal hunter/catcher)

Alastor also means "defender of men" and is an epithet of Zeus

Alastor's backstory (if Viv hasn't changed it) is that he was shot by a hunter and died

Alastor's stuck and enslaved to Eve-Roo, and wants to free himself as well as everyone else who's victim to her

hence the constant repeating of "he's actually a nice guy" and Al looking like the least evil person in the room by comparison to people like Vox or Val

and it's why Alastor doesn't try to fuck with Charlie too much (not only is Eve-Roo her actual mother, but he knows Charlie is instrumental to getting his freedom)

They're just prize figures, dunno how much those are where you live but they're like $15 here.

Alistair also brings to mind the British occultist Alistair Crowley

Crowley was responsible for the religion of Thelema, and served as a prophet to usher in the Aeon of Horus

Thelema posited that the Scarlet Woman/Red Goddess/Whore of Babylon (Gaia/Mother Earth) would be impregnated by Chaos (Father of Life)

From this coupling, the Moonchild would be born: a human being serving as the vessel for raw divine power and capable of either saving or destroying the world depending on whether it was influenced by Good or Evil

Unlike the Messiah or Anti-Christ, the Moonchild is a regular person who lacks emotional control (neither stoic or free of desire)

Al's been gone for seven years because he's been paying his debts to Roo-Eve as part of the deal involving Lilith. Watching over Charlie is included with this. My guess is that Roo-Eve's been having Alastor do her dirty work and set the stage for taking over and corrupting Heaven, using Hell as a backdoor.

My gut tells me that the DEEP LORE goes something like this

Lucifer letting Eve eat the apple had major consequences

It damned her to Hell but as the first Woman and the source of all Evil/Free Will, the seeds of the fruit connected her deeply to Evil as a power source

Now Eve is the Roo(t) of all Evil

Because Lucifer and Lilith made Hell grow stronger, Eve became incredibly powerful

Heaven panicked because it made Eve a walking threat to the status quo, and began the exterminations to keep her in check

Eve's plan is to make Hell so strong that it topples Heaven and makes all divinity corrupted as revenge for being ABANDONED and BETRAYED by Adam, Lucifer, and Eve

Do you think that Alastor has his own plans with Charlie too?

I think Alastor genuinely likes Charlie because he sees her as the one source of Good to come out of the Biblical family drama he's been dragged into, as well as reminding him of his mother.

My guess is that Alastor intends to build up Charlie as the ultimate anti-Roo weapon: having the Moonchild take down the Scarlet Woman, freeing Alastor from future enslavement. But it's not totally heroic: Alastor doesn't trust authority at all (hence the disrespect towards Lucifer, taking down Overlords, being in love with how anarchy defines Hell), so he wants Charlie to be in a position where she removes he State from the equation.

No Heaven or Hell in charge of anybody, just a free-for-all where everything is on fire and everybody suffers equally. But Charlie will prove him wrong and show that he can have trust in authority (which will likely be tied to Alastor's future romantic involvement).
