Why was this show a massive failure?
Invincible Fight Girl
Cartoon network barely tries to market new shows that aren't for toddlers. Look how they treated justice league action.
Pathetic shit, muh animu attempt for normies to go "this is best animated sequence of a fight!" Or some other variants like "show me a better fight, I'll wait" in twxtter and reddit, of course it was going to fail.
Brown female protagonist
This
3/5 of my favorite artists made multi page porn of her. That counts as a win for me
Sauce?
It came out like 10-15 years to late when people tuned in and watched action toons
Ker drew it for /dlc/ over at Anon Babble.
Wait there's porn of her? Is it actually good?
*sigh* into the eye of the beast I guess
Instead of making a genuine action series, they made a shitty fucking bauhaus slop comedy, something we already have like 4 billion of and have for the last decade and a half.
This is the first thread I've seen about it and i browse here pretty often
I watched the first episode and found it a little too twee for my tastes
I assume it was meant for Cartoon Network and they stuck it on Toonami because it had action
I guess i didnt shill it hard enough
Dumped on Toonami. They’ll get the exact wrong message from this too.
battle show about an inexperienced teenage girl
literally 0 good ryona webms
Jesus, at least KLK didn't pull its fucking punches.
Clearly not
Let's be honest it was to anime and did tropes from 20 years ago. Even the speaking pattern sounded like old dubs at time as if they were trying to be a parody but it was obviously meant to be genuine.
Add on to this most came in hoping it'd be about a mary sue getting a clue, or more realistically a heroine that has to struggle a lot to reach her goal and making up for her physical weakness with tenacity and thinking. But mostly she just suddenly gets exponentially stronger in literally less than a week. She is able to beat a whole 4 man of experienced wrestlers she was brutalized by in less than a week of their first fight. It's like most modern female led shows they don't want to make the femmc struggle so it feels mary sue ish. Even if she gets beaten or loses because the natural hero journey/progression is flawed/broken it makes it feel like she is favored by the world. As the hero usually loses but still gets something or wins in ways that feel rushed or unearned. I say she'd be better as a base for a Anon Babble au or just a Anon Babble ryona girl
because of its horrible writing.
The best kind of protagonist. A decent tribute to action anime, hurt by its dedication to being a tribute and going by the numbers. Andy has a great personality though; dances between eager and bright-eyed to blood-lusting berserker.
The writing was sloppy, flip flopping between deconstruction of fighting anime and playing straight, much in the same way they flip-flopped between Andy being a novice and a prodigy. The pacing was abysmal, the humor one note... It just wasn't great at all.
My reasons for not liking it.
1. It looks like the same kiddy shit we've been getting from Cartoon Network for years. Action shows that look like something for toddlers are shit.
2. "muh wrestling" is a boring concept/setting for a cartoon. At least go full Bruce Lee movie-tier deathmatch tournament
3. I don't remember any of the villains because they're just this forgettable. All of the characters are pretty dull, but villains are especially so.
One would think in a series about fighting there'd be more than enough memorable fighters but guess not. Despite all its retardation, Baki got it right for fuck's sake.
Ponder if 90% of the fights went like Videl vs Spopovich
Exactly this, really andy and many modern mcs have that naruto problem of. I'm the under dog but also "special bloodline/super skilled/super smart/the secret goat etc". They are somehow just starting out but can keep up or catch up to people 10x more experienced with little effort. Putting in about a week of work and only 2 fights and being able to completely demolish a guy and his 3 friends in a 1 v 4 who have been wrestling since childhood and are fully grown adults is insane.
Also wait was it ever a deconstruction? I felt more like they were playing it straight but it was so bad it felt parody esque.
kek
Isn't wrestling kinda boring of a concept to build an action show around? I mean normally it'd make sense, years ago perhaps. But fightfags have anime shit these days and they want to see more flashy stuff like that.
They do get flashy anime wrestling powers so it's not just 2 people grabbing each other hoping for a pin.
If the original power puff girls came out today they would absolutely give it the same treatment and consider it too violent for 7 year olds and stick on at midnight. The modern CN is a bunch of cowards. The show came out at the worst time when network's aren't allowing cool stuff and taking risks
when network's aren't allowing cool stuff and taking risks
That's all on streaming. TV is dying.
It tried to be anime but for the wrong reasons. It tried to do slow pacing and training arcs which is fine, but thats only because shonen like Naruto and HxH anime had to follow a horrible 1 chapter adaption format and were released weekly back then. Sometimes they benefit from the slow pacing depending on the direction.
Invincible Fight Girl feels like it tried to copy that(and without a manga) and the result is not too good. Should have just been its own thing.
Anime is shit so a cartoon trying to be anime sounds like it'll be shit
andy a cute
She is.
it's more surprising to me that anyone had faith that this was going to be anything other than shit since the initial reveal. nothing about it looked appealing.
Yeah, also add on to that most mangas/shounen's get like 25-50 first seasons. They have time to be dragged out and this allows for slow but great training arcs. Also a lot of people mention naruto and dbz, but this show was like a 1 to 1 of mha "can I be a hero wrestler"
Nah their are tons of great wrestling cartoons, comics and anime. This series doesn't really lean hard enough into the wrestling aspect really feels more like fighting/mma series.
I think it could be great even with just grabbing, but yeah but the irony is mostly only andy has a truly flashy move as of right now. With her god tier punch while most others just have super strong moves like the beef puncher straight.
True but eh might be fine because of the art style see realist or more accurate proportions make the violence feel real and less cartoony. So I think they'd be somewhat fine as even TTG gets pretty brutal and it's the golden child but no blood. The even a nose bleed era is long gone as most Cartoon companies are pussies. Also came out when CN was dying and the current CEO is retarded, we now have more CN content on Disney plus than on MAX. Let that sink in dudes.
what about anime trying to cartoons?
anime is just cartoons.
How would you guys fix this series?
Anime fans aren’t excited by generic brown girl protag.
Make it at least TV-14
Cut down on the anime influences
Make andy get beat up way more (which also makes her wins feel more impactful)
Make it a general martial arts show instead of just wrestling
Make quesa poblana less OP busted (or add more characters that rival her stength)
I really liked the idea of the show but saying all my bickers it does feel very gimmicky at times :(
Lies, the amount of simping for brown/tan tomboys is insane. If anything, it's more telling of how bad stuff is. Like Korra, the sheer amount of initial love and hype from fans was insane if you remember being around then. It's just that in the West, brown protags have sadly become synonymous with self-inserting, poor writing, and no depth in characters.
Think it is supposed to be well it's on adult swim hopefully if it gets a s2 they lean more into the fighting brutality
Agree
Hard agree
Agree
Agree
Really same liked idea and most of these suggestions are things I've said before in threads. One idea I had was have their be a new gen of wrestlers trained by the scout/the wrestling corp, they owned the rights to the perfect strike footage. So I said have all the new gen have better versions or perfect counters for it. So have next season andy works her way through the try outs to become official wrestler. Then tries to fight maybe the new rank let's say 96# then they easily demolish her and when she tries to use the perfect strike as a last resort she gets hard countered forcing andy to not keep overly relying on it.
Also yeah think the series needs more grappling but still martial arts would be great mix in. Honestly sad they used the classic old bad anime tropes, instead of the more fun modern anime fight tropes like using unique moves and cool smear frames. An Andy definitely needs more beat downs, but kind of hard now that she has basically surpassed most of the fighters who are years her seniors. So in the end she basically would need a hard cap or why I suggest the new gen top 100 so she can have actual challenges. But really the irony is how popular the show was for a half a sec when the first ep dropped because of how it lied about what the show would be. With andy getting beaten but not giving up and having to learn and grow against better fighters, then it became andy is just naturally durable skilled and strong.
Yeah they simp for ones that look better.
Ehh, it was kind of boring.
Anime without any of the things that make an anime worth watching.
My point is most of these characters would do better in like '10s but the problem comes from the fact that most have killed the vibe. Like I feel you could list a few brown western mcs but most are average to shit, with a few unique stand outs
Lies, the amount of simping for brown/tan tomboys is insane.
Is it?
The only tan tomboys I can think of that people simp for in anime these days are Nagatoro and the bunny girl from MHA.
Usually the brown girls that get love in anime aren't tomboys, most recently the girls from Okitsura, neither of whom are tomboys, and Okitsura is a romance series/tourism ad anyways, not an action show.
Ok tranny
I didn't mean all tomboys but most tan girls in anime are either tomboys or gyaru. Also Anon Babble has a tan tomboy thread at least once every 2ish weeks. I was kidding around with the lies part being animated, but brown girls are fine in anime just the western variation that gets hate because as I said the well has been soured.
Look at desscara, everyone loves her both on twitter and Anon Babble people even call her the new gojo. Though Anon Babble loves her for very.............interesting reasons but seen a few praising her as the best part of that manga.
So its a cartoon and not anime? That sounds awesome anime is trash.
Pick a lane either go all in on wrestling or general martial arts/mma.
Because for all the talk about "wrestling" it ended up feeling like more of a detriment. It felt too goofy and ironic, just the modern goofy shit and well fuck that noise.
If going the martial arts route, just have it make sense and progress naturally. The whole perfect strike nonsense was a plot tumor.
The anime wank was the worst , I enjoy anime but IFG leaned into every shit reference it could, and it'd just get an eye roll outta of me.
And don't undermine your positives with stupid shit. Bertie is probably a high point that's just sandwiched between dumb shit.
See I say the same and they can keep the grapples but really they use more realistic submissions anyway.
I mean goofy is good, I've seen some good latam wrestling series. But it's about leaning into it fully or not a joke here or there is fine but the whole thing is weird for how serious it is at times
Yeah, and also we could have better fights than just the goofy toes and finger thing. I feel it wants to have cool fights but then has that super goofy vibe. Like shounen is the inverse serious but with goofy eps or moments, but this show had a ep about a abused unloved girl and had feet and southern jokes in the same ep and same scenes. "Ha ha we just beat our broken daughter and ran her out of town, now by the way let's make goofy faces and poses as if the scene wasn't super fucked up and treated super seriously" So mostly a bad tonal shift constantly
100% I was so taken out when they used the damn dbz sound effects unironically. Like come on that's just lazy it's a literal sound effect made in the fucking 80s. That's really it's other huge flaw it feels so anime that it doesn't have any real "umph" like nothing to make it special as it feels like it's so much of other shows and really so average it can't stand out. Also they lean into references and anime tropes from the 90s and 00s so it's so dated for a series that just came out. Feels like a show that would get heavy praise if it came out in 05' or something as it'd be so new and original but now everything in the west is going the way of anime so who cares.
Ha didn't even read this part but I referenced her above and honestly she is my favorite character and she is completely over looked and I hate it. Hope if we get a s2 she comes back and is a main rival as she really is basically a actual hard working andy. Andy beat a girl that actually came from a wrestling family and trained so hard she turned herself into a beast with only a 2-3 days of training. Then they'll say she's not a prodigy.
It's basically a copy of Ultimate muscle and mucha lucha
HEY! come on now, that's disrespectful to those two
"dude anime" does not a good show make
Tell that to weebs
Finally get decent looking non cal arts action show
They burry it and don't promote it at all
It had a total of zero original ideas. Everything it did was lifted straight from anime.
It aired on Toonami so most discussion for it happened in their general
anime is all original ideas
I think the main issue is that
It didn't look very interesting
It was an obvious children's show airing at midnight and pretending it was aimed at adults
That's a recipe for failure.
None of these wannabe anime will ever take off because they're trying to capture an audience that doesn't exist.
The people who are into anime like it because of how it is, if your show doesn't have that stuff, no matter how much bots on Twitter try to pretend otherwise, people aren't going to be interested in your show.
Likewise, the people who *actually* like cartoons like them for specific reasons, so just making a cartoon that desperately wants to be like an anime is going to turn them off as well.
It's the worst of both worlds, and seems to mainly arise from this retarded idea that you can appeal to people who like anime and people who hate anime at the same time.
Oh that makes sense now i avoid anime like the plague
it was doing well
Lol, lmao even. Shit had its rerun pulled mid run and never trended on Max even once. It’s dead
People like TAN girls, which are usually still Japanese. Not nappy headed nogs
Weebs hate shows like this that just scrape a bunch of surface level anime references together into a pot and call it a show
Never said that. But when your show is pulling obvious ideas from DBZ, Naruto and other trash that Toonami aired back in the day, it makes it really obvious where you copied all your ideas from
Who the FUCK decided that Invincible Fight Girl should be the actual title? It sounds like a joke title fans give to a show. Not to mention the Billy and Mandy ass stylization they gave to it
A western cartoon trying to be dbz/naruto/bleach sounds amazing though. If it had blood and brutal combat/solid animation. Not even japan makes dbz kinda anime anymore.
Well realistic submissions have a logic to them, and through that you can build the story of a fight.
Like a leglock finish creates a whole focal point for the attacker and defender etc.
I don't think all levity is bad, and it's necessary to avoid being too self serious. It just feels poorly placed and utilized. Probably a side effect of going from kids programming to the adult swim block.
I don't mind dbz sound effects, in dbz. but sfx is the least of its issues. The pacing and shounen narration from the onlookers drove me up a fucking wall. Just let the fight flow, if it's well done you don't need to stop it dead to explain it to the viewer.
Andy's ability is kinda all over the place, they don't know if to make her a prodigy or an underdog. But in fairness the low episode count and compressed narratives may have impacted that. There just wasn't the time to build so the narrative just gives her a lot as a result.
I watched the first couple of episodes and, while it wasn't bad, it wasn't interesting enough to watch a third. The girl is cute, but there was nothing else in it that hooked me into keeping up with it.
A western cartoon trying to be dbz/naruto/bleach sounds amazing though.
Does it?
The reason the west never made a show like that isn't just because of some nebulous nefarious shadow manipulation, it's because the west just doesn't have that capability.
Maybe if Disney hadn't been the face of cartoons for half a century things could be different, but that ship sailed a long time ago.
We no longer live in the world that Gen X grew up in where people heard "anime" and thought "eww, icky!" so the idea of "anime thing, but western" isn't really appealing anymore to anyone who's not 45+ years old.
not even Japan makes DBZ type of anime anymore
Poorly paced dogshit where the characters stand around and narrate tiny snippets of a fight?
Avatar , megas, totally spies, and teen titans did pretty well, like you said they didn't put it on the right venue
Bleach
Woah there buckaroo, that one wasn’t on Toonami so no one ever tries to copy it.
Western creators always try to “fix” anime. They don’t copy it 1:1, they pull Twitter acceptable themes from them and leave out all the yucky fanservice and ryona people actually liked
Avatar
Ok
Megas
Was never trying to be anime. Just a parody of popular things at the time. Sometimes something from the east, sometimes the west.
Teen Titans
The heavily anime influenced episodes are some of the longest standing criticisms people have of the show
Avatar and Teen Titans definitely did well, but Megas was a failure despite being pretty good and Totally Spies was kind of iffy.
The latter was brought back recently but is largely irrelevant because the audience that was interested in that kind of stuff that would have existed 20 years ago either no longer exists or goes elsewhere for that kind of entertainment.
But like I said, you are NEVER going to be able to make a show that tries to combine anime and western cartoons and succeeds, because the people who like anime like the Japanese elements (which obviously aren't present in the western shows trying to be like anime) and the people who don't like anime don't want to see anime tropes in a cartoon since those tend to be the things they dislike the most.
They're aiming for an audience that doesn't exist, the kids that liked Avatar and Totally Spies and Teen Titans didn't like them because they were "like anime" because most of those kids had no experience with anime outside of whatever they saw on Toonami. They liked them on their own, as shows, regardless of whatever influence they might have had.
True was just saying mma can use submissions as well so her being more submission based early on could still fit. Really I'd like anything that just is more fighting based and actually shows her growth in all aspects than just one damn move.
Oh yeah why I mentioned shounen, they do it but usually fit it a bit better. That could be true but feels like they were always going dark seeing as that storyboard of the homeless perm gang was dated like 2019-20 or so. Makes it feel it always was gonna be pretty serious/dark.
I feel it's a numbers game it all stacked makes it feel less original than it already was also makes it more obvious especially since it's used in serious scenes. It makes them feel to forced or lazy. See their are comics that can do this well but most can't translate it good into western animation. Manga and Anime have perfected the dialogue and reactions during fights, but in the end that's because they' had tons of flops because of it.
Yeah the modern fem mc in general, always the underdog but also a genius and super skilled and everyone sees tons of potential in them also they win every fight or if they lose they still win etc. I mean better to draw it out and just do half in hopes of more. If they actually made her interesting but made the season feel half done we'd be having a vastly different convo anon.
Bleach
Woah there buckaroo, that one wasn’t on Toonami so no one ever tries to copy it.
That was one of the first shows Toonami reran constantly when it came back.
