There's something bothering me about this place
I know! This lesbian bar doesn't have a fire exit!

Anon Babble in a nutshell: women who pretend to be attracted to their own sex and dumb fat guys with autogynephilia.
What should've bothered him was the woman in green changing her skin color between shots.
what's her problem
realistically shouldn't his entrance in such a place be prohibited?
legally I don't think they could.
Anti-discrimination laws. You can't outright say "no men". It'd be up to the clients to kick him out. But since I assume Homer showed up and went straight to the bar to buy drinks, I doubt anybody there minded him.
Maybe the She-She Lounge is very trans-friendly and they assumed she was a trans woman.
Nah, it was the 90's. Gays weren't being told to be actively hostile towards non-gays yet.
According to The Simpsons Guide to Springfield, Kirk is a regular at the She-She Lounge (which is played as part of a joke about how desperate he is to find love, going to a lesbian bar in the hopes that one of the regulars brought a straight friend or relative). The book's canonicity is debatable, but it does imply they're fine with men coming to the bar as long as they behave themselves.
The joke that follows is that they assumed he was a very butch woman.
Why would you not allow a paying customer who isn't causing any problems?
Maybe he's there to get understand the culture better.
If he was hitting on all the gay women or making a scene, then yeah, boot him.
She's Smither's sister.
I like this explanation.
going to a lesbian bar in the hopes that one of the regulars brought a straight friend or relative
Another sign that this was from the 90s: the writers apparently didn't know bisexuality was a thing.
kek
literally me
"we're here, we're queer, get used to it"
In the 90s, bi was code for "I'm actually fully gay but don't want to admit it".
It's somehow a softer sell. Especially for celebrities and the media.
"I totally still like the opposite sex. Don't worry about it."
Now if you're gay or really are bi, either is fine. Just be honest with yourself and others.
They thought Homer was a really ugly butch
The secondary joke is that older gay bars were often in second rate real estate and had poor safety & upkeep.
Like some landlords wouldn't rent the good places for a gay joint.
You'd end up with a place built before modern codes or it'd be over capacity cause it was originally a retail shop.
They thought he was a butch. But even without that lesbian bars are generally okay with men being there as long as they're drinking and not hitting on any women, because it helps keep the business going and a lot of gay bars have trouble staying open because of their limited clientele so they'll welcome any quiet drinker. It's the moment you start bothering lesbians that you're thrown out, just like women are thrown out of gay bars when they start getting handsy with the men and making a scene. Homer obviously wasn't hitting on any women and so he'd be allowed to drink in peace.
lazy simpsons quote thread.
I hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

I know! This sneed store doesn't have any gummy bears!

Tmk random straight dudes showing up to gay bars to get sloshed is kind of a common occurrence.
Once you reach a certain level of alcoholic, they will walk off to any bar in the distance and ignore the local flavor, sit at the bar, and grab a whiskey.
I'm friends with a lesbian and she actually talked about that to me because of this scene. Apparently lesbian bars are completely ok with men coming in so long as the men recognize they're in a lesbian bar and you know, don't try to hit on anyone.
offscreen, a wizard is giggling
Can confirm. I'm a regular at a gay bar. A tranny flirted with me and I just took the drinks.
bisexuals
it's just gay with extra steps
