Never got the hype about Spawn. I was a 90s kid and still never understood it nor do I understand why it still gets issues and even tons of spinoffs. Its clear to everyone on planet earth he was only cool in the 90s. Its 2025 who still reads this shit
Never got the hype about Spawn...
Most superheroes nerds go crazy about are from the 60s. It's not that weird
That shit will always be real.
It just looked cool and had a very good toyline launch with it.
Some people like it and this demand is enough to keep it afloat, what's hard to understand?
It's pretty good for what it is:a edgy 90s comic starring a hell-powered anti hero and his constant personal struggle of coming to terms that his former life is no more.
I read it up to issue162, but 100 is a good stopping point for the "classic" era as a whole.
My personal wish is that they give Redeemer some kind of miniseries or even his own comic series since a lone angel hunting down demons could be cool
Honestly I'm just fascinated by these comics that refuse to die. Apparently gold digger ended recently at 301 issues but you never see anyone talking about it or witchblade or motherfucking femforce
I liked Haunt more....well the first half anyway. The Spawn HBO show I also like a fair bit but that's just cause of being a more serious adult cartoon and me liking Sam, Twitch and most of the crime elements on the story or the villains.
Its clear to everyone on planet earth he was only cool in the 90s. Its 2025 who still reads this shit
Oh I'm sorry, can you name a modern comic that's any better than the classics?
Copra.
Most online comic spaces are bitter as fuck, who wants to discuss it online? Believe it or not, people do hang out and talk comics at comic shops.
This is because nobody talks about comics online besides marvel and DC (despite these being ironically enough abysmally selling brands).
Invincible
Rule of cool
Swap the characters for marvel or DC and you'd be drooling over it
That's from 2003
Retarded take
the JSA era a few years ago was killer but the writing was always shit
This is the only time comic books looked good.
love spawn, but the series should have ended when god and satan got trapped in an eternal struggle on some other planet
the 90s lasted until 2004 just like the 80s lasted until 1994
9/11 distinctly killed the 90s
Kids should learn to defend themselves against the 90s.
9/11 footage still feels like 90s to me in terms of image quality. bush 2 in 04 killed the 90s.
Wrong
Maybe you were too young then to see the impact it had across the board in media.
I'm forty retard
Then you're autistic. I'm only 36 and can remember.
Gold Digger gets brought up here solely on the basis of ‘look how long Gold Digger’s run for and nothing else. It’s an Antarctic book by someone who’s gradually becoming more famous for porn parodies, that says something about how meritous the comic is for actual discussion.
Never got the hype about Spawn. I was a 90s kid and still never understood it
Because you weren't cool.
All I know about Gold Digger is that the characters in it get laid more often than the X-Men.
No one "reads" Spawn, it has no story. People just buy the covers.
One creator working for them pretty well summed up saying they’re basically the Asylum pictures of comic books where they largely just publish books meant to capitalize on hot topics and trends and other IP coming out around the same time these days. GD is some of the last old school Antarctic press stuff out there. Even back then Ninja High School tried trend chasing pop culture a lot.
Filtered
this is extremely based
Because you weren't cool.
Have you been perpetually 10 years old since 1992 or something?
Most comic book fans keep buying shit out of inertia. "I've got every issue up till this point! I can't stop now!"
It sucks because Spawn basically ended with issue 101 but Todd's got nothing else of note to offer and a giant ego that won't let it die.
It was a product of the 90s, you wouldn't get it.
OUR FUARKING HEROES
youtube.com
We get it, bro. You're not cool.
This. Kino ending. Oh well, I still buy it for the covers like someone else said.
McFarlane's clout
peak 90's edgy
also normies can recognize him in a crowd even when they've never read him
Look who's talking.
op here. i think some people are misunderstanding me. im not talking about why spawn WAS popular, im talking about why he's STILL popular
Never liked it either. None of the image books were good and the art wasnt enough for me.
When you're 13 you think it's a cool design but never look much beyond that. When you're mentally 13 and like characters like the Punisher you think he's the coolest shit ever and the peak of comics.
This. Also, peak Spidey design
He has a cool design
Cool voice
90s nostalgia
Unironically good HBO cartoon
Goes to show you just how far a good design can carry a character.
Hell, it's the only reason Spider-Gwen is allowed to still exist despite being complete shit. At least there's some actual substance behind Spawn to justify his continued existence.
yeah + mortal kombat
it's time for a well made current gen spawn game
Oh you grabbed a picture of the Spawn, Punisher, Michael Myers and Mortal Kombat convention.
And SoulCalibur 2
Im not the one complaining about why people like Spawn, bro. You're a nerd, so you don't get it. Simple as.
Tawd needs to draw a crossover before he's 90
I just want another Spawn show and video game.
I am surprised that after Invincible became a success there have been no attempts any other Image creators to have their comics adapted (Chew, I Hate Fairyland, etc...), I know Todd is still working on that Spawn movie, tho.
I like Spawn, I'm just calling you out for being a retarded manchild.
It sucks because Spawn basically ended with issue 101 but Todd's got nothing else of note to offer and a giant ego that won't let it die.
Its ill-advised, but I do respect it to some extent. Todd always though comics having large issue counts made them feel special or important. It's why he refuses to do relaunches of the main Spawn book or start at #1 again.
I'm just calling you out for being a retarded manchild.
Just cuz I said you weren't cool? Way to prove my point, dork.
Kirkman alone couldn't get it done, neither can any other Image creator. It took producers wanting to pick up the properties and make them.
Even with Todd's relative big money for a comic guy, he can't just pay his way into Hollywood.
Because of your childish behavior, as shown with your reply, dumbshit.
Says the guy calling me "retard" and "dumbshit" just because I said you weren't cool. Keep digging that hole, bro.
Kirkman alone couldn't get it done,
Kind of unfortunate, and this is after he gave AMC their most successful franchise with The Walking Dead TV show.
You're too stupid to get my point, which you keep proving over and over again. Only immature faggots like you care about being "cool" and say that others aren't just because they don't like your favorite comic book character. Now go kill yourself, faggot.
Reality is unless you have a multi media push you are going to be forgotten. An animated series. A few low budget games. Though that was what worked back then. Media is too saturated for another push like that to work without getting lucky
And you keep proving me right again and again. Like I said, keep digging that hole.
A lot of culture until 04 were still riding on the "Y2K era" momentum like Powerhouse era CN, nu metal, Unreal Tournament, Matrix movies. 9/11 happened but these things still dragged on due to momentum. It's like how the late 2010s "woke era" lasted until 2024 instead of ending with the pandemic.
