As stupid as it sounds, I use to really like the Lucy and Augustus dynamic.

I thought it was good for Lucy and her character development (which we can't have) to make friends with someone away from the table. Someone who maybe had a history with the group, but not necessarily with her as "just another boy who wanted her body". And someone who wasn't afraid to show the more shitty aspects of life and call her out on her bullshit.

But Augustus' character has been so watered down that he's barely even a shadow of his former self. Such as shame Taeshi has written to be fully indoctrinated into the Lucy defense force. And that this whole situation is being set up to give Lucy her girlboss moment where she gets to tell him off for trying to take care of her fragile ass because she never asked for this!

Yeah I figured that was likely the intention, but even so, it just doesn't do anything for the reader's experience really: I doesn't remedy the situation, nor does it make the comic any more enjoyable or even believable. It's just bashing over and over again, and, anytime there's hope for a change, things just go back to zero, or somehow get even worse, with characters like Augustus being transformed into Lucy's pet, secondary characters losing any potential for becoming relevant or interesting, etc.

The only idea that makes sense to me is that Lucy wanted to prove (to herself) that she wasn't a useless parasite and she couldn't do that without braving her old demons. Except the moment Lucy came back, she got a new teddy bear boy in Augustus, and Mike proved so angry and pathetic that she could style all over him with near zero effort. So an opportunity to grow up turned into comfortable backslides and regression.

People hop on to this new lucy because its seen as her getting back at him for "Making her jump". With a lot of readers forgetting what Lucy did that lead up to it.

One of the comic's themes, if not THE theme by that point, was that even when you try to change for the better, people still remember the bullying and shitty stuff you did. Tess was the poster girl for this. But after that, the comic became uneven with how characters get punished for being shitty. Some characters catching repremands way worse than ones that have done worse.

Well yeah but even before Taeshi went off the deep end, that was just Mike. Besides December and the lead up, he hadn't ever done anything to Lucy or anyone(he barely did anthing to her there but ignkre her and acream). The point of James was to give Mike false hope before kicking him in the balls. This was evident to anyone who noticed that Mike is never allowed to be happy for long.

It really wouldn't fit his character. Mike is, at his heart, not a cat but a dog: ever constant and faithful. That's what Lucy liked so much about him in the first place, that no matter how much she kicked and lashed out at him, he would still unshakably be at her side. Of course, by the time she actually decided to stop being such an abusive bitch, it was too late and he had a new master now in Sandy, and due to Paulo's bullshit Mike now had it in his head that Lucy was a threat to his bond with his new master, so he did what a dog does to threats to their master and he lashed out at it.

Taeshi unfortunately believes that her slow burn milquetoast drama is utterly enthralling. Probably because a lot of it is based on her sad little romantic history with Suitcase.

It's less a ticking bomb and more of a demon's core: two relatively inert, boring halves, but by blithely putting them so close together, the whole thing just radiates toxicity. Not so much that it'll fly apart, but more than enough to make anyone who looks at it sick.

She just doesn't want to dwell on the actual bad side of her own fursona. The comic itself became a dumbed down safespace for her to fuck around in.

It would be amazing if Mike finally dumped Sandy just to turn around and date literally anyone and everyone who isn't Lucy.

I've never seriously read this comic, but every time I see one of these threads, I can't help but look. It always feels like pulling the camera back just a bit would reveal that Mike is in Hell and this is his eternal punishment.

Because actions mean a whole hell of a lot more than words. But nigh everything that actually happens in BCB is so passive, and Augustus got Mike to swear off any active interventions. So Taeshi quickly, stupidly wrote herself into a corner and I wonder if this is her attempt to partially undo that. but i feel like he primarily only ever showed up to fuck with abbey and abbey was pretty easily played. i dont think he messed with anyone else who WOULD be given to drop him. even mike has his limit until he finally tables you, i think this is the first time he's really gone out of his way and repeatedly harassed someone who poses a threat to him AND cant be kept at bay so easily by just comparing him to his dad
by the way, funny how abbey's therapy arc coincided with augustus finally having a social life beyond showing up to rattle his cage, im sure it wasnt intentional on the author's part but still big think moment

I figured it was because Abbey dealt with Augustus a lot less than he did with Paulo. He was around Paulo daily because he was dating daisy. Also paulo constantly brought up his mom while Augustus went for the "Dad" button. He can't stand being anything like his dad at all so even if he did throw hands, the words about being similar would echo.

Despite all of that, I still fell like I missed nothing of importance. This is one insane (and infuriating) ride.
