The ending was Worlds Collide. Robotnik won and rewrote reality. Everything was wiped out. The only thing remaining was Sonic stopping him from wiping out another dimension, for another 28 issues at least, before his dimension faded from existence.
Post-reboot had a handful of good stories, but was mostly bad and didn't deserve an ending.

I'm skeptical because this makes absolute sense for the kind of game they're making here, what's the best way to get whales to spend money? Add actually obscure characters that everyone wants.
On the other hand, there's this shit , and the fact that these characters don't have models definitely doesn't help, you'd think they would want at least one of these ready for launch so we all know what to expect out of this game.

There's no baggage, Sega owns the character.
They do. Games aside, Sega owns everyone from all three Sonic cartoons (Adventures, SatAM and Underground), everyone from post-reboot Archie and everyone in Boom (cartoon and comics). Sega is in a legal grey area with characters from Sonic X and Sonic OVA, and of course, Penders owns all his characters and a good majority of pre-reboot characters are left in the dusk so that no other writer tries to pull the same stunt (unless they were made by Ian).
