The characters are super easy to draw and recognize, so you get a gigantic boom in fan content and people feeling personally connected. It's a similar reason why the horse show exploded with popularity, you only have to learn how to draw one character and then you can draw every character immediately

-do not use that production value to make things hideous (Most indie stuff that meets the above criteria fail this, like monkey wrench)
