I don't remember her ever doing that. But it's just basic logic: Mike was the best on the team right up until David joined. Ergo, Mike is now second-best.

Did anyone else on the team say it or was it just James claiming Mike was the best? Currently this comic makes me think James gushes over people he wants to bang and they may not be as good as he claims they are.

I suppose it's never been officially declared. But given that James immediately latched onto David only because he's faster than Mike, it stands to reason that James likewise latched onto Mike for being faster than the rest of them. Otherwise, James would have been busy gushing over the team's then-fastest runner. The only member of the team Mike's talked about wanting to beat is David, and only David is ever shown to beat Mike. So I feel pretty confident that Mike is runner up.

We've been dicks to Mike lately, maybe we should organize a sleepover orgy tonight as an apology.

Mike would just cut to the chase and volunteer to leave before any of that happens. He's one of the newest members but no longer the fastest. Mike wouldn't want to break up the existing friend group, can't justify David getting kicked, and now his membership has become a source of pain. The team might be unhappy to see him go, but I think they would reluctantly accept his logic, wish him well, and promptly drop out of the comic due to lack of relevance.

He latched onto Mike for being fast despite not even training. His speed's not been put into relation to the rest of track team at all. If anything, it stands to reason that he's the slowest right now since he's new. Besides, for all we know, James could have already latched onto every track team member in the past.

I think that would actually be the straw where I just quit entirely.
It's like, I know Mucy is fated no matter how fucking dumb it is, but sometimes there's little moments where you hope she sees reason and either starts working towards it in a way that makes sense or drops it entirely.

Mike being the slowest makes very little sense given that David barely beat him just one page ago. It would also be rather strange that Mike only cares about beating the fastest member of the team if everyone else is also ahead of him.

I suppose this could also be from the what-if chapter when Mike really does turn down Sandy. Lucy's mentality in it seemed to be that once she-demon Sandy was truly out of the picture, Mike was no longer really at fault for all the stuff that happened between them. Otherwise she would not have fallen back in with him so quickly.

We didn't see anyone but David and Mike running. And of course it'd make sense for Mike to care if he doesn't want to be last. That's if Mike cares about his performance at all and isn't just sad because of what James said.

Nah I think this is just one of those napkin scribbles. It is non-canon and everyone can be more out-of-character than they already are. This was probably drawn as a meme.

David himself said the race was close. It doesn't make much sense that Mike is the slowest but also barely beating out David, unless you're arguing that David is second slowest on the entire team. But then why is James so enthused about him? Why the joke about not needing Mike anymore? The team wasn't trying to fill a roster when they picked Mike up.

James is most likely just enthused about fast people in general. And the joke would make just as little sense if David and Mike actually are the two fastest. It's just a stupid joke / bad writing.

The joke would make far more sense my way, though, as would James' gushing. Mike was the star of the team before, hence them needing him. Now David has taken his spot, making Mike functionally irrelevant. Besides, that just wraps back around to the question of why James would be so enthused about two people who are both slower than his own friend group.

It's practically a horror story from a certain angle. No matter what Mike does, he's desteined to have to deal with the table group to varying degrees. Even if he tries to make friends with people away from all of that drama, one of them will follow him and fuck it all up.

I am, because James randomly fell for David, a person he had zero experience with, after seeing him run faster than Mike. I just do not find it terribly convincing that James would be over-awed by a guy who's faster than the slowest guy on the team.

Another question worth asking is why James would assume that Mike (and subsequently David) would have such great potential if they're both running slower than anyone else on the team. Surely either of them would only stick out if they were, sans training, already better than at least some team members.

The thing is, what you're stating would be how things would go normally in life. But due to Taeshi's writing history, I would not put it past her to have james only care about the fastest guy and such just to make him stop caring about mike for the sake of whatever plot she's cooked up here.

Because while past Taeshi may have been able to separate the suffering of her white cat fursona from her own, modern Taeshi cannot. It probably didn't help that own Taeshi's IRL mental breakdown happened around December, coinciding with Lucy's. So when freshly returned girlboss Lucy blames Mike for her woes, self-inserting Taeshi followed suit.

Yeah, but it won't be. Taeshi decided over a decade ago that David, Mike, Paulo in that order were the most athletic boys in the cast and it won't occur to her to figure out where James and co fit in to the ranking.

think about that is those two, whether undeserved or not, are allowed to have good things happen to them to balance it out a lot more than Mike does.

Mike gets the track team as a bandage attempt to his rep but the mall outing had him magically run into lucy to ruin his day, and the movie with james had to end with David being a lame ass meme character and ruining that too. Mike literally cannot have anything good in this comic at this point. It's been like this since Lucy was written out of the comic and it isnt getting any better.

There is two small pieces of evidence for this however. Funnily enough they have been claimed by "mysterious" DMCAs.

One was a "joke" comic Taeshi did of Abbey telling Molly he was gonna have to rape her and another was YET another Taeshi drawing of Molly sitting on Abbey's lap, kissing his cheek while he was all flustered.

It's very bizarre things to draw between your minor sibling characters. But given how much Suitcase adored Molly's character is is pretty sussy. I'm pretty sure that's the whole reason Madison as a character was created.
