Was he a good Judge Dredd?

Was he a good Judge Dredd?

literally the only good thing about the entire movie was the bike.
and maybe the 5 seconds of ABC warriors

Not really, but it's ok, his performance is decent and the rest of the movie works just fine, even rob.

No. Not at all. Not Remotely. The second he took the helmet off it was over but even beyond that just no.

Dredd is much better. Stalone was too 'I must have my face shown' he didn't give a shit about the IP. Karl Urban said he'd only do the film if he wasn't allowed to take his helmet off. The story is also much more focused and you get a real feel that Dredd is just doing a normal day on the job clearing Ma-Ma out. He also gets a little bit of humanity at the end saying she passed when she technically failed. Also the way he just says

Perps were uncooperative

Is funny.

He could have been.

I think the only thing that I'd give to the Stallone film is that it shows more of the sci-fi elements of the setting, but unfortunately it doesn't really use any of them to the film's advantage.

Stalone was too 'I must have my face shown'

I thought it was executive meddling insisting on that? Like Stallone didn't want to but some suit was like NOOO AUDIENCE WON'T KNOW IT'S YOU IF YOU DON'T SHOW YOUR FACE

Should've been Arnold, Stallone already had Demolition Man, you shouldn't be able to play a super cop in two different movies.

Canonically, neither were good Dredds. Stallone was wacky, but Urban was too edgy and quick to play executioner.
Also I never imagined Dredd as the gruff faux-Batman voice so Urban didn't do it for me. The ideal Dredd should be one that projects his voice with confidence. Not fully hammy like Stallone, but not as low-key as Urban.

>Judge Dredd (1995)

Bad Dredd, Megacity like the comics

>Dredd (2012)

Good Dredd, Megacity not like the comics

What we need to do is combine the Dredd from 2012 and the Megacity from 1995 to get an authentic (to the comics) version of Judge Dredd.

He was the law.

Did Rogue Trader and Darktide cause a resurgence of Judge Dredd threads today or what?

Who was to blame for the helmet thing?
Was the studio the ones who said "We're not paying to have Stallone in our movie and not show him off!"
Or was Stallone the one saying "I'm not gonna wear this helmet for the whole movie, soon as the introduction is over I'm taking it off"

I don't think it's ever been confirmed, but judging by Stallone's interviews on the movie he was more apathetic about whether he had a helmet on. Like he acknowledged the fans had a problem with the helmet off, but didn't really act like it matter, but also didn't really act like it was an ego thing. It was more like, he knew the movie had a bunch of problems and didn't rate the helmet as being that important in the grand scheme of things. So with that in mind, either it was a production mandate, or it was just nobody putting much value into it either way instead of anyone having a mandate.

we work hard, we play hard

The interesting thing is Stallone's Dredd is way more visually faithful to the comics than Urban Dredd; but Urban Dredd captures more of what makes the comic work, and translates it far better to the screen. It's probably the clearest example of what is and is not important in an adaptation.

The only chin in Hollywood that came close to Dredd's was Stallone's. He had the part by default.

I guess Arnold must not have been interested.

No, iirc Stallone himself said that he wouldn't act in a movie where his face wasn't shown clearly.

really

No, he was Hamlet with eggs

Best Dredd adaptation

Stallone's Dredd is way more visually faithful to the comics than Urban Dredd

199'5's Megacity like the comics, 2012's Megacity not like the comics

This is the biggest, most widespread fake fact about these two movies. The 90s movie reflects MG1 as it looked in the 90s, and the 2012 movie reflects 2012's MG1, casuals just can't tell because they never read Dredd comics that recent.

I wouldn't mind the helmet thing to show his face a few times but it's like having a Batman movie where we get Batman in the full suit for only ten minutes, driving the Batmobile, and using his gadgets but then it's Christian Bale in a t shirt and jeans for the rest of the film.

I wouldn't mind the helmet thing to show his face

Oh so you do not read 2000AD

When the plot is literally him being stripped off his badge, being sentenced to prison because he’s framed for murder and then escaping and returning to MC-1 it makes no sense for him to wear a helmet when he’s in civilian clothes.

You're gonna have your mind blown when you read how all of those things happened in the comic and they didn't show his face, kid.

You're gonna have your mind blown when you realise some things work in comics due to static and still, forced perspective of the panels but don’t in live action format where the camera is moving and just because it’s a running gag in the comic strip doesn’t mean it’s going to work in a movie where it would just be nonsensical and doesn’t add any real value.

doesn’t add any real value

Why did you think anyone wanted to read the opinion of "how much should Joe Dredd show his face in a movie" from someone who doesn't read 2000AD?

Step aside, poser
This is the best Dredd

90s tend to have much cooler aesthetics in general, so I don't blame them.

Fanboys going “waaahhh it’s different” isn’t a valid opinion.

His performance is pretty bad and a lot of the time almost seems like he's parodying people's impersonations of him. Then you add on Armand Assante saying he was purposefully trying to act like Stallone to reinforce that they're clones and the whole thing is sunk.

He wasn't just a good Judge Dredd, he was the law. Also fuck the haters, the film was fun and kino as fuck.

He's great if you think of him as a different take on the character and not something that's intended to be comic accurate. Otherwise he sucks.

... I want a 2000ad CRPG

The 90s movie reflects MG1 as it looked in the 90s, and the 2012 movie reflects 2012's MG1

What the fuck are you talking about? The city is still full of goofy architecture and wacky robots, not heavy concrete with massive steel door commie blocks as depicted in 2012. Do YOU read the comics?
