Dark Horse sends Cease & Desist to GetComics

GetComics, one of the largest and most popular sites for downloading comics for free just got a C&D from Dark Horse and as a result they've removed all Dark Horse stuff from their site. Apparently the guy who contacted him is named Ken Lizzi, an employee of Dark Horse.

Yet another reminder to download as much shit as you possibly can when you can. I wonder how much shit is lost/harder to find online now

this didnt need a thread lil bro

I’m surprised one of the companies actually did something.

name a current Dark Horse comic worth downloading and reading. Even DH admits it's manga thats keeping them afloat. THey got nothing, besides moebius and Corben Libraries

how is dark horse able to get their shit taken down but megacorps like marvel and dc cant ? is it because marvel and dc know that piracy helps sales/garner interest?

Yeah that explains it
Wait does this include licenseshit that Dark Horse lost the license for?

Bitch, go back to your off-topic spam threads.

Didnt they print a bunch of EU Star Wars? Good thing I already dd all the omnibuses I cared for.

It’s not so much that it benefits sales, it doesn’t and that has never been true, it’s that it decreases the value of the product so the other companies can’t afford to spam the market while staying afloat like they do.

This is the same reason the music labels and film studios didn’t tamp down on it, indie media was booming in the 90s and early aughts and the best way to kill it was to undercut the return a smaller studio or label, totally indie musician/band or director could recoup.

Anyone telling you piracy benefits sales is parroting a talking point of major corporations who know it isn’t true.

Umbrella academy is fucking awful though.

I did like robinsons magical hotel mini with J Bone tho.

Are there any comic book torrent trackers?

A lawyer AND a creative writer?? i didn't know SOVL/SOUVLESS could even be dual-wielded by one man

I figured it was a Mr Skin situation where they look the other way because it moves old product (yes people do click those Amazon links and buy dvds of old tit-heavy movies, and I assume at least a few new readers who use pirate sites to give comics a try become paying customers).

I think this is pretty much going to be the end of convenient piracy. It's going back to the Limewire/Kazaa days of shady sites filled with digital AIDS and half the files containing trojans that lets some Russian teenager into your home wifi network. All because Indians and Mexicans can't stop going onto Reddit and Xitter to brag about how much they pirate and where they get it from.

is it because marvel and dc know that piracy helps sales/garner interest?

I pirate a lot but the thing that perplexes me is this
The cancellation line for a Marvel/DC ongoing is 15 - 20k
That is not a lot of people.
It's even lower for an non Marvel/DC series, as low as being under 5k is considered the cancellation line.
I know plenty of people pirate comics because they're not American
They don't have an LCS (not like every American has one either) and even if they could afford overpriced imported issues and trades it wouldn't go to the actual companies or creators behind those comics.
I've noticed a lot of younger people on comic social media are ESLs and the idea of them being more invested than Americans just pops up from time to time in my head.
I can't help but feel there will be at some point a series that's gonna be popular with the foreign fans but not the Americans who actually buy from the direct market so when the latter doesn't buy despite the former's gushing, it'll a be rude awakening like how gaijin aren't the ones in control of what WSJ axes or not.

Between exchange rates, localization costs and market size there is not a single form of media in America that priotritizes any foreign markets. Some tent pole action movies cater to China but even then they can’t guarantee that Chinese udiencea will take to it and so it isn’t worth it most of the time.

So the idea that any comic will be made with a foreign market in mind, or that there is any way that would generate sustainable revenue is just absurd to suggest. Japanese comics that are already a success in Japan are localized for western markets because they’re larger economies with more valuable currencies that represent a return on investment. There is no market in the world outside of the US that represents a feasible return on investment for western media, specifically comic, companies. The markets that may generate some insignificant revenue generally have apps and digital options.

I'm aware why American published comics don't sell for a foreign market
That wasn't the point I was making
I can't properly articulate it in words but I just think it's kind of funny I guess that a series could feasibly be well loved by pirating foreigners yet still be cancelled because not enough Americans (just under 15k at most and 5k at least even) didn't bother buying.
The longevity of a hobby of theirs' is dependent on a country that's mostly ambivalent to comics and has an outright literacy problem

This isn't new- back in the 90's Alan Gant noticed Lobo sold very well in the Latin American market where the combination of macho man and blue collar satire resonated well. He tried to get DC to make a book for that market, and they refused to look into it.
Similarly, when Matt Groening dissolved Bongo, chuck Dixon was writing and noted that they sold well in Europe and tried to get them to sell the license to a European publisher, which was also refused.

I can consider buying something like Watchmen but buying mediocre trades or extremely expensive floppies is just not going to happen for me. I'd sooner just stop reading comics.

...so?

im an aspiring data hoarder but mostly movies/tv/anime. i need more space if im gonna start collecting comics/manga too. cant afford more space right now though. i kinda assumed that when it came to piracy comic/manga sites would outlive video piracy sites. guess i was wrong

new Umbrella Academy

there's new stuff? is it good? i havent read since the 2nd volume/story arc and that was like 15 years ago

RCO and Getco aren't even the best piracy sites in my experience

No to imply any of this stuff was ever a secret club but you got way too many high profile you tube retards bragging about the sites and calling attention to it to a point were I'm shocked something hasn't been done sooner.

Wake me up when RCO goes under
Even capeshit writers and artists use it for quick reference

just my opinion but i dont think marvel or dc give a fuck about the free read online sites. they dont seem to be doing literally anything to try and stop them . they are an "open secret"

retard

It's because the vast majority of people who do use the direct market to buy floppies buy capeshit from Marvel and DC
It's rare for a comic from them to have a jarring disproportion between buyers and piracy readers.
I think the one major example would be Gwenpool and even her series sold enough to last a few trades before going under

Huh, interesting
Reminds me how popular Duck comics are in Europe and how a writer I like is American yet the Duck comics he wrote don't get released in English

Honestly? If convenient piracy stops I'm not going back to the age of torrenting. I'm going to stop consuming the media all together. You expect me to pay you for the privilege to read garbage like this? And even if it were something better why would I spend money to read it once when a game will give me more entertainment for the same price

that never came out thoughbeit

privilege to read garbage like this

It's been years
It never even came out

Get a life

it would have if it didnt get roasted online. someone at marvel thought this was a good idea until the internet bullied them

I'm just pulling from extreme examples. Even if I discard all the obvious fetishbait there aren't any new writers who can compare to the goats

there aren't any new writers who can compare to the goats

I like Absolute Martian Manhunter

DC and Marvel streaming shit doesn't even work. I tried to get a free month of Marvel because a comic I pirated had a page missing or something and it didn't let me enter my credit card to get a free month. And DC isn't available in my country at all. They are all in on USA LCS market.

I like a good number of things coming out. And if I have the trust that it's going to stay good I don't mind blind buying. Problem is I have very little faith in what's actually going to be good or stay good.

No one making you read these, they only exist to bait suckers like you into talking about the company which is a form of subliminal marketing there's no way they're not self aware and doing this on propose. It's not even about the sells with these just trying to get the brand in your head.

What good comics has Dark Horse published?
Any recommendations for stuff they've put out that isn't superhero adjacent?

Beasts of Burden, The Goon, and Usagi Yojimbo

If convenient piracy stops I'm not going back to the age of torrenting.

You're at an even bigger risk because of seeding and it being easier to track.

but I use a VPN

They're all Israeli/Slav datat harvesting companies that can and will sell you out by giving your data to the feds and rightsholders when they're not selling it to advertising companies.

Shalom, FUD shill

fuck off i torrent all day long and use a vpn and nothing bad will ever happen to me

you seem to know a lot about reddit, maybe you should go back

Ah shit, where am i going to get minor threats now?

If convenient piracy stops I'm not going back to the age of torrenting. I'm going to stop consuming the media all together.

For most people it's going to be the same.

I'm not gonna buy random comics at $5 a pop to "see if they're good" when 99.99% of them are shit I wouldn't accept for free. You need to improve your ratio a LOT before you can return to that model.

Again does this include their expired licenseshit?

I have a feeling companies are going to go harder and harder on copyright shit soon.

Yeah that’s what I’m fearing, I guess I’ll have to actually start buying floppies of shit I like.

based on what ?

bump

How come Getco has to oblige but RCO could presumably laugh off this kind of charge?

soon

Look at what happened to Mangadex, they lost something like 25% of their uploade chapters overnight and many on series that have no official English translations and likely never will.

Probably depends on who runs it. I would assume GetComic is based out of the US or something while RCO is likely based out of some turdie country.

To be perfectly frank, I think manga's community being much larger globally and far more dedicated makes them more easy to rebound and rebuild

that wasn’t the point I was making

No, no it clearly was that america should consider foreign readers more. It’s just that you just seem have now made a new point that “murrica bad! Murricans dumb!”

Not in the same way. What happened to Mangadex is going to mean that translators will be more reluctant to upload their stuff which means things are going to be more scattered into fucking Shitcord groups. Mangadex also has the benefit of working very well and being ad free making it incedibly easy (and more importantly safe) to browse while also not compressing or watermarking images like a lot of the shitty turdie sites do.

Chuck Dixon has been talking about Dark Horse lately and how they're apparently THE worst company to work for in all of comics. From his description, they sound even more like the cliched "evil corporation" than even Marvel or DC does.

No, no it clearly was that america should consider foreign readers more

Not at all
Again, I compared it to WSJ axing manga that may have fans abroad but failed to resonate domestically.
I don't want Shonen Jump to pander to Americans.

that “murrica bad! Murricans dumb!”

Reading Rainbow was literally made to address the problem with illiteracy in America
People defended Harry Potter simply because it got kids to read again (it didn't work in the long run)
Americans on average don't like reading, it's why there are multiple PSAs encouraging kids to read or visit their local library.
It's why book stores struggled to maintain business.
You can't deny America's literacy rates is tied to the comic industry which already has its own unique problems.

Not surprised
Guy Davis left comics after being jaded by them, one of the reasons was letting Scott Allie still be around until he properly got Me Too'd
Prior to that it was an open secret he was a sexpest

I still can't believe Skottie Young did this first.

It's kind of funny, I used to read a lot as a kid but my reading of prose largely tapered off at some point in middle school, replaced largely by comics and manga and then by the time I was in high school nonfiction history.

QRD?

qrd?

I've started to notice the Japanese are becoming more aware of English language piracy sites past anime.
One of the big name tokusatsu guys heavily implied that one translation resource got taken down because stupid westerners wouldn't shut up about it (he basically just said "A pheasant that doesn't want to get shot doesn't sing" or something like that) and that they would've done nothing had the westerners been not so open about it.
Hell there was one hentai artist who found out people were translating and distributing his shit without permission but sat down and realized he could have these people working on his favor.
Not sure how that turned out.

A pheasant that doesn't want to get shot doesn't sing

why are the japanese so cool and artistic bros
