I think chainscaling only works in series where there is a consistent amount of power escalation. Even then you can only really justify one or two extra degrees of separation compared to direct scaling.

I actually thought the animation for Kratos vs. Asura was good. I know a lot of people had problems with it, but I thought it was great.
Even if you disagree about Asura losing, given the power gap between the two it makes sense for Kratos to take little damage. It also put Kratos in some kind of a mentor or elder role to Asura, and let Kratos show how far he had come by defeating someone who had been down the same path as him. He wasn't just fighting Asura, he wasTEACHINGAsura. And I think that's very heartwarming in a way. That Kratos would take the lessons he learned and help someone who was just like him.
If this weren't a Death Battle I'm sure they would have ended cordially and taught each other well. The alternate ending is weird, even if heartwarming in its own way. It was nice to see Kratos reunite with his daughter, but it feels weird to have him just stand there and take that punch.
I haven't played Asura's game though (but after watching this fight I think I might watch a playthrough!) so I might be missing stuff but as a big GoW fan I thought they did Kratos justice and from what I saw they treated Asura with the utmost respect. If Asura, size scaled correctly, punched Kratos like he did in the fight, Kratos wouldn’t even register as a speck of pixel compared to Asura’s fist, just like how Asura was in comparison to Wyzen’s finger. It’d look ridiculous. They can’t have Kratos do insane lightning fast combos like Asura did when he fought Augus because he’s never shown to fight at that level. GOW’s fighting is way more grounded and slower-paced than AW, they know this so they can’t show it. They just use their wank and make Kratos a tank and one shot every one of Asura’s form, which made for a boring fight but they had no other choice otherwise it’d look insane to the average viewer to see Kratos doing more than his game actually shows.

Kaido is a very popular villain and character. How many characters can he fight that generate an interesting match that are also thematically consistent? It's just not that many. I don't think there's even one besides maybe Acnologia?
