The Oblongs

Why did nobody tell me this show was actually funny?
When I saw it getting popular on tiktok and youtube shorts, I assumed it was because of the typical *holds up spork* quirk chungus humor, but it's like a 10-jokes-a-minute kind of show, like early spongebob/simpsons/futurama. Who wrote for this show?

Why did nobody tell me this show was actually funny?

Because you don't watch it for the comedy, you watch it for the gothmeat.

Retard.

Artstyle reminds me of Fat dog mendoza

how

it's like a 10-jokes-a-minute kind of show

shame that most of them aren't funny, then

So the mom was just a regular, modern, sub-standard white woman and the joke was that she settled for a torso, right?

She didn't settle. She could've married Tommy Vinegar

Nope, she was actually high standard and fell in love with Bob because he's a cool guy. Also he implicitly has a big and dexterous dick.

what does angus do now? Last I heard he was selling shit out of his attic and garage

I like the episode where the mom boxes... because it's just so funny, yknow?

Bob

is he a reference to subgenius/discordianism? I haven’t watched the show

yeah he's a discorder
the fucks wrong with you?

I dunno. It's very trippy like that show.

To you.

I laughed at a lot of them.

Who the hell is Robbie!

Also he implicitly has a big and dexterous dick.

As a quad it's basically a tool for him. I remember one episode he plays the piano with his penis.

I mean, it's a pretty old show. The creator is kind of an odd guy, and you can find mini YouTube docs about him. Interestinly enough the show was only 10 percent of his vission and he butted heads with the studio at first but eventually just worked on the visual side of things.

He doesn't hate the show, but he thought it tried to be too much like The Simpsons. Originally, Creepy Suzy was going to be the main character. And she really should have been, she only has maybe five minutes of total screen time, and not one episode about her, and she is a fan favourite.

too much like The Simpsons

Yeah, classic Simpsons. That's why it's funny.
I know the show was a book before, but I've never seen scans. Has anyone here read it?

Yeah. It's only okay. I think there are 2 books, and I don't know if I only read one of them. It's been a while. It's like a children's book for adults, and they are mostly about the frog girl, aka the fat one. It was amusing but nothing ground-breaking.

The stars really do align.

this nigga really expects me to read all those words

discord moderator ahh comment

Ahh? Why are you screaming?

Why did the artists draw buttholes on all the animals? I thought that's only supposed to happen in anime

Ehh, she’s fun but I like the idea of a deformed family more, was a dark contrast. The premise of the original book is just weird kids, Susie wasn’t the focus there, she’s just on the cover so people think it’s about her.

she only has maybe five minutes of total screen time, and not one episode about her

Yeah that sucks. We almost got one but they scrapped it.

and she is a fan favourite.

Why is that relevant? She became popular long after the show ended. And It’s not like they had the power to tell who viewers liked most before developing the show.

Same reason Raven from teen titans is popular. She's goth and people like to draw her.

she's not hot topic goth, so scenefags shouldn't care about her

And giving Susie more things to do would involve showing her family, and that could easily turn into Addams family but they curse anyway. You get enough of the weird kids on the show, idk if Angus just wanted the whole thing to be goosebumps but deformed kids or something.

I learned about this shit because I looked up "List of conjoined twins in media" or some shit on Wikipedia because I was expecting to find Charles and Mambo from Duckman. Watched some episodes while they were still free on YouTube and it was hilarious and then I bought some episodes for the PS Vita of all places.
Helga's the best character. I don't care how hard Angus was pushing Susie, she was about as funny as a 2x4.

I bought some episodes for the PS Vita of all places.

Did you like the vita? (Someone who rocked his psp till it stopped)

Creepy suzie is really overrated. But still have her over the girl with no jaw and one boob.

Yeah the Vita is alright. 100% Gex on it and Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance on it. I want to experiment with making homebrew on it but I never got around to it.

One anon claimed Angus wanted his young daughter in exchange for an autograph. Don’t know if kidding or not.

Do you have a source for this? Because Angus' comedic stylings are pretty similar to the TV show. Have you ever watched Deliriously Jen?

I asked Chat GPT, it gave me a rundown of what happened and provided sources. It couldn't find the exact 10 percent quote, but the overall sentiment was correct.

According to IMDb's trivia section for The Oblongs, Oblong commented in an interview that he was generally dissatisfied with the show and accused the producers of essentially creating a clone of The Simpsons .

IMDb

Further insights come from an article on Everything2.com, where Oblong expressed frustration over the creative process, stating:

Everything2

"I thought we were designing a dark, mesmerizing show, but it is so bright and colorful."

Everything2

He also felt marginalized during production:

"They treated me like a little brother who they had to drag along on a date even though I hired all of them."

Everything2

Oblong attributed the show's dilution to network executives' decisions:

Everything2

"Even though they said they wanted to shock and offend, when it came right down to it, the network toned the content way down. They were just scared."

Everything2

These statements suggest that while Oblong may not have specified a "10 percent" realization of his vision, he clearly felt that the final product did not align with his original, darker concept, and he was critical of its similarities to The Simpsons.

So the source is bullshit someone wrote on imbd? Yeah I'm not trusting the same page that says The Oblongs was "Will Farrell's first time doing an animated television role"
ask AI to dig up some newspaper clippings instead

Alright, boss man. I asked Chatgpt again and said I wanted better sources. And this is what it said.

You're absolutely right to seek more authoritative sources regarding Angus Oblong's criticisms of how his artistic vision was handled in The Oblongs. In a 2016 interview with Vice, Oblong expressed his dissatisfaction with the show's direction:

"The Oblongs was pretty close to my original vision, but missed the target on a few points. Showrunner Jace Richdale was a chickenshit afraid of offending anyone out there, so a lot of my jokes, situations, and plotlines ended up getting thrown aside. The show turned out more like The Simpsons and less like South Park; Jace had never seen an episode of South Park, and I kept telling him to watch it to see what we could get away with in those days."

Additionally, in an interview with The Sacramento Bee, Oblong remarked:

The American Prospect

"I thought we were designing a dark, mesmerizing show, but it is so bright and colorful."

These statements highlight Oblong's disappointment with the show's final presentation, which he felt deviated from his original, darker vision.

You know you can just use ChatGPT and Google yourself. It really doesn't take that long and ChatGPT is free to use and it's super user freindly you just talk to it like a person and you can just tell it to find sources for stuff and if the sources are shit you can just ask it to get you better sources. It's super easy to use and it's free. It takes the same amount of effort to ask me to look stuff up as it does to use ChatGPT yourself.

There were other sources to but I only copy and pasted the main ones.

Do not redeem

What does "do not redeem" mean in this context?

you asked chat gpt....for source....

You can do that now. You can check out the sources to verify what Chatgpt says. You can ask it for sources now, and it will actually do research and post the sources so you can verify what it says.

no I will not, I will do it the way nature has intended, by googling. why are you acting like a normie

not him but the first result you get when you type a question into google is an ai generated answer

I am using a tool that works. Does it fuck up sometimes sure. But that's why you ask for sources. That way, you can always verify what it is saying. It's just a faster way to get the job done. Plus, it's always annoying when people ask you for sources for every little thing, and you Google it for them, and then they always have a problem with the thing you Google. So then you have to waist time until you finally find a source they actually like or nothing will ever be up to their standards, cause a lot of the time these people are just being little shits trying to waist your time. I usually just tell these people to google it themselves and this pisses them off and they turn into a broken record and keep stating over and over again how it's your reasonability to google stuff for them etc. But thanks to Chat GPT, you can find sources super fast now.

Sometimes it does make sense to ask for sources, like if after you tried to look things up and came up short. But a lot of the time, people are too lazy to even do that, or it's a deliberate troll campaign to get you to waste your time. I bet in the future, once people start using Chatgpt to find sources, Trolls will just claim everything from Chatgpt is unnatural or untrustworthy. So then people will just use Chatgpt to do the research, but just quote and reword the framing and copy and paste the sources and then trolls will accuse everyone of using Chatgpt. Even though it's impossible to tell at that point, and even if the information is 100 percent accurate. Becouse for a lot of people it was never about verifying information it was about being a little shit. Which makes sense when you're talking about politics, people love to steer the conversation away from the actual topic when they know they are losing, but it's especially weird when the topic is apolitical. But Some people are just addicted to acting like little shits. So, whatcha gonna do?

Now this asshole’s spamming with his copy paste chatgpt shit. Maybe cause I said Susie shouldn’t have been a main character lol.

to be fair I'd settle for the torso too if I was a woman

I was asked for sources twice and provided them twice. That isn't spam. Also, the topic was how the creator felt about the show. It never had anything to do with Susie.

i know and it pisses me the fuck off.

did you ask chatgpt to write you all that? mark my words, they will take that "tool" away because there is no way for it to make a profit from the costs its hemorrhaging.

I wrote it myself. Did you even read it? Chatgpt doesn't swear. Maybe there is some way you can trick it or something. I don't know. I will say that is one thing annoying about Chatgpt existing is people will accuse you of using it without a substantial reason. As for the economics and longevity of the tool, I can't speak to that. But I find it weird how you put tool in quotation marks. Are you trying to claim it isn't a tool?

Who wrote for this show?

Karl Marx.
Isn't it obvious?
