OtM was full of cliches, didn't really accomplish anything new story wise, and the animation (while stylized and looks great in some scenes) doesn't really add enough to make it a good movie. On a technical level I view it as equal to Luck, but with a more interesting story and characters. Still not a great movie though seeing as how we're comparing Turning Red to OtM. Turning Red hit early 2000's pop culture right on the head and is a more enjoyable and relatable production for general audiences, and narratively serves as a sort of time capsule for that era of boybands. Both fine movies but TR is iconic compared to OtM's generic chinese myth narrative

I kinda liked how symbolically the mother's wardrobe has more calm tones like blue and green to represent her repressed emotions, while Meilin has reds and pinks to express her more unrestrained emotional being. Even her grandma and aunties were decorated with hints of red that they were not nearly as repressed as Ming Lee.
The mom had a better design and is who the film should have been about.
it probably was who the film was about initially but they figured they could make a more compelling family movie by giving her a daughter of her own to deal with. Basically her arc fails, but her daughter succeeds where she couldn't
