it says "a network around them" and zimmy hates being directly observed, it's likely something like an alarm if zimmy wanders too far outside a pentagon shaped area.

This comic is so old that it predates the release of Demon Days by over a month. If you think about the way it looked early on with that context it makes a lot of sense.

Just talking about how the general aesthetics of the comic looked at the time. It's a very mid-00s look which always immediately makes me think of other comics/cartoons from around that era, just used Demon Days as an example because of how close together they were. That bleak, angular, angsty kinda feel that the comic gradually dropped as it went on.
Yeah the first like 10 chapters or so remind me a lot of flash animations that were coming out around then. Salad Fingers and this Reflection cartoon kind of remind me of it personally, could also see the Gorillaz angle though.
