Summer started out as a funny teenage girl stereotype with a slight boost to vulgarity but since S3E2 they’ve tried to pivot her into Rick and Morty’s third man, an action hero girlboss.
This was the first episode that put those two sides of her to the test. What if Summer grew up in a new context and was permitted to become the ultimate girlboss? Well, she has the potential to do it and she made big things happen, she became confident and capable, but not a pleasant person to be around, nor was she happy. The episode impressed upon us that the character of Summer shouldn’t lose her teenagerlyness because that’s what makes her endearing, it’s not something to write away from.
There was a reason she was shown to be obnoxious, it wasn’t an endorsement (unlike the Kuato episode which was a complete misread on her character).

Yeah, this is the tendency of a Rogue Summer: without the guidance of Rick or her parents, she'll end up performing actions that go beyond moral ambiguity straight into ends-means post-facto justification. Notice how even when she confronts Morty in Power Plant Valley she's not apologizing for her actions, which she sees as necessary to escape the Matrix, she's sorry that he got hurt along the way - sorry that he grew attached to CJ and his other squadmates.

She remained convinced of her ends but regretted her means to achieve them. It’s honestly the perfect takedown of the Kuato episode (I’m not alleging this is intentional) because that episode required Morty being written OOC/suffer to make Summer look better than she was.
It’s not a great episode because the humor was light and the Beth stuff didn’t land the best, but it was serviceable and better than her side of Die Hard and Kuato.

Man, this show feels like Simpsons levels of being on their last leg.
The writing is god awful, the voices are very different, and they're relying a lot on characters constantly screaming and gratuitous bloods & guts like family guy.

Blood and guts on this level has been a thing since Season 3.

I’ll be honest, I’d have jumped for joy for this episode in Season 5, but the baseline of the modern show has actually slightly risen since then. By the standards set by 6/7 I’d put this as middle of the pack, but it wasn’t bad.
I have a good feeling about this season, other than Rutherford’s episode which worries me. Beth is so underutilized and giving her episode to him could just make a bad problem worse.

Does anyone else really hate that Rick's fake backstory, which was established to be fabricated and had to be because otherwise the escape plan he made it up for wouldn't have worked, turned out be real with virtually no modification? Fuck me, I didn't expect anything in particular and I might have accepted that part of the fake backstory was true, but why the hell wouldn't I rule the exact scenario I was explicitly told it couldn't be? That has to be the thing that has pissed me off the most about the show.

He couldn't, if he remembered it he wouldn't have been able to insert new details, the bugs felt secure in their plan because they knew it was impossible. I know it doesn't quite work like that in real life but that was the established rule within the show.

Do you think Jerry Siegel is an adopted alien orphan or that Stan Lee was bitten by a radioactive spider? When you make things up, you do admittedly do so from your existing frame of reference, but that doesn't mean it's all personal experience. Even if Rick had to pull from his memories to make that up, it doesn't mean it had to be virtually identical to what actually happened, it could have just as easily been a series of movie clichés he cobbled together.

Pretty sure it was between S2 and S3 where in an interview one of the new female writers for the show boasted about wanting to give more focus to Beth and Summer for being underused.

That was the turning point in the show.

Shame too, since Beth and Summer each had their unique roles to bring to the show, but those were lost and nothing gained in return.

With Beth they even tried to have their cake and eat it too by introducing Space-Beth as the girlboss-version of Rick while keeping "regular" Beth, except that regular Beth was already ruined by making her more "assertive" towards Rick.

And with Summer they made her gross and cynical and just wrote her very inconsistently. Just compare S6E1 and S6E2, two back to back episodes. In one Summer is a cynical girlboss badass, in the other she's a scared girl who has to find her way through a tough situation.

Just watched. Honestly, not bad. From the other posts here I was expecting dogshit, came away with a pretty middle-tier episode. You guys really oversold the Summer girlboss stuff, it wasn't even the focus like in some of her other episodes, it was just setup for the bit at the end. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. Beth is the best, most complex, and well writte character in television history. I love the fact she’s Rick 2.0. Everyone on Anon Babble loves her and agrees Rick and Morty is a masterpiece of character development and intellectual writing. The show has gotten better and more intelligent as it goes on- and I can’t think of a single person who disagrees.

Jumping the Shark in S3E1 by turning Rick into the smartest man in the universe with a gigantic powerlevel has prevented the show from telling the stories it used to, and it took three more seasons for them to figure that out and try to correct it.
Turning everyone into a snarky mini-Rick threw off the whole philosophical balance of the show and they’ve only started to correct that with Morty and Jerry.
Beth is completely underutilized.
How Poopy Got His Poop Back was a generic template plot complete with guest star and movie references just as an excuse to memberberry some characters.
Kuato wrote Morty completely out of character to make Summer look better and thrust upon her privileged status in Rick’s eyes that she didn’t earn, and the show just signed off on it wholeheartedly.

Sounds like some good shit! I'd be interested in reading the whole thing once you're done cooking. My concept is a little more tame, happening over two episodes.

In the first episode, we open with Morty and Jessica finally getting together, and Jessica tells Morty she wants to "go all the way, right away, to make up for lost time", resulting in Morty having a full-blown panic attack because he's still a virgin. Intro hits. After, he goes to Rick about it, and Rick tells Morty he's actually not a virgin, he's just had his memories of losing his virginity mindblown, which pisses Morty off of course and he explains that it's functionally the same as being a virgin if he doesn't remember it. Feeling (guilt? annoyance? both?), Rick takes Morty to a few alien planets to try and help him re-lose his virginity, but Morty keeps pussying out. Rick gets pissed off and takes him home.

Over dinner, Morty tells the family about becoming official with Jessica. Everyone seems excited for him except Summer, who seems bitchy and sarcastic about it, and Rick, who "doesn't give a shit". Everyone thinks Summer's brattitude is just normal Summer snark, except Rick, who excuses himself to the garage.

Later, Morty and Summer are on another planet, harvesting some crystals for Rick, and Summer asks about Morty's date plans. Morty tells her what Jessica said and expresses his nervousness about losing his virginity. Summer makes fun of him, and casually offers to "cure him" because "virginity is cringe", saying she would do it so he doesn't embarrass himself with Jessica. Morty protests of course, telling Summer she's fucked up and "spends too much time around Rick, and it's rotting her brain." Summer counters with "Like, who cares? We already have a baby together. And it's not like I'm YOUR Summer," and as Morty continues melting down, she changes up, saying she was just saying those things to make Morty "spaz out" and wasn't serious anyway.

Rick has three things in his favor
1. They should know not to fuck with Rick’s stuff
2. Them being in there for that long was a genuine mistake
3. If he mindwiped the suffering away is it really that big of a deal?
The family has become accustomed to these fantastical things, it is their normal. Rick shouldn’t have been that negligent but it’s not something that needed to be addressed very much. Morty did get equivalent revenge (with more sinister intent) but Rick is simply more competent.

Lets face it, the porn is the only good thing remaining about this show.

Morty won't let up, saying it's not ok to joke about and lodging criticisms against Summer/Rick, the argument boils down to the two screaming "fuck you" back and forth until Summer pulls up her top and says "Oh really, fuck me huh? Okay, fuck me then you little pussy!" Morty, seeing her tits, has an out-of-body experience as his teenage hormones go into overdrive. We cut to later, with Morty and Summer coming back through a portal, looking a bit... rough, and Rick's sitting in his garage, asleep amid many empty beer bottles. His computer chimes and alerts him that Morty's DNA has been detected inside Summer. He groans and says "... god damn it, Summer." At the end of the episode we see Morty laying in bed. His phone's ringing - it's Jessica. He looks at it, then just sets it down. In Summer's room, we see her writing a diary entry where she expresses that she didn't love the idea of Morty hooking up with Jessica, or anyone else for that matter. She's interrupted by a knock - It's Rick. Roll creds. In the post creds, we see Rick approach Beth the next morning saying "We need to talk. Morty and Summer... went for ice cream."

In the second episode, we open with Rick sitting Jerry and his wives down in the garage, and he has tons of charts and graphs and data points to try and rationalize it to them, but to his surprise they barely seem to give a shit. Rick demands an explanation and Jerry says, "Well, who cares? I mean, they already had a baby together." Space Beth chimes in with "Yeah. And it's not like she's HIS Summer." Earth Beth shrugs, offering no comment. She's eating a pint of ice cream. Intro hits, and the episode is about something else entirely and nobody acknowledges or mentions the whole Summorty thing at all.

... until the post creds hit. We get some photos of the family at Boob World, having a great time, and the final few shots are Summer and Morty in the photo booth at Boob World, and ends with a lingering shot of them kissing.

Every time you see Morty experiencing something for the first time, there's a chance he's already experienced it, and Rick stole the memory. It'd be one thing if Rick were only doing this to protect Morty from the most traumatizing experiences, but he's not - he does this whenever it's convenient, sometimes even maliciously or just for fun. Huge chunks of Morty's life are being stolen from him constantly, and often at his own expense or worse, for Rick's amusement. It's completely, totally fucking fucked. And what's worse, we have no idea who else he's doing this to, or when - the only person in the family who is actually safe from this is Rick himself.
