Everyone pissed about the roster still finds themselves forced to admit that Jason was a good fucking call.
The only people I saw mad about Jason were people saying he was no longer in vogue and they were BTFO by overwhelming Pro-Jason sentiment within days.

Around the time the beta was going on, HBO Velma was announced. She was a shill pick that they luckily just made the normal Velma.

What went wrong

You'll get a million answers and most are valid to some degree but the bottom line is this:
Shutting down the game to rebuild it in UE5 killed its player base, and the rebuild itself massively downgraded the game and took away the only unique elements it had.

It had a lot of potential before the UE5 rebuild. Its movement was unique and both expressive and high-skill. I really loved the focus on offstage chasing and ladder combos. LeBron and Taz were extremely fun characters for me.

I actually love the roster with some obvious exceptions being the shills. What really really killed the game was the period of NEARLY A YEAR that the game was offline.

Everyone had let go at that point especially after hearing that they kinda dumbed down the gameplay, despite the fact that the coolest characters were yet to come

Convert them to gleamium, they added an option in the store to convert fighter tickets to 1000 gleamium (the same amount required to buy a character). These guys are major assholes for not making everything free when they disabled monetization all the way back in January though, one last fuck you from the developers I guess.

Datamines show Daffy was coming within the next two seasons along with the Wicked Witch of the West and a bunch of random stages (Mad Max, Over the Garden Wall, Barbie).

I don't mind not having all of the big hitters off the bat. People react based on this being the final roster, but obviously the plan was to continue for years and so some big hitters would be stored in the back pocket for later seasons to boost interest back up. I get that, same with aiming for including both boomer and zoomer picks providing they don't overdo it.

The only actual issue is when they waste picks on characters that wouldn't be in most peoples top 100 choices. And really, that only applies to Banana Guard, Lelbron, Donut Steel Dog, and Nubia. Even with Black Adam only being there for a shitty movie tie-in, he's fine I suppose as a character to add eventually, and adding Arya to the game made sense at the time as they probably wasn't banking on Game of Thrones just killing itself overnight like it did.

Did I mention Lebron James? I can looo past obvious advertisement picks like Black Adam and Beetlejuice. But come the fuck on. Lebron James isn't a character. He's a fucking guy that exists. You may as well have thrown David Zaslav onto the roster and at least up the villain count.

Shaggy was specially annoying because not only was he the face of the game he was also really strong in-game (possibly on purpose because he was the only free character and because of the meme) and required low effort to get good results with.

Not that the second should have existed, since the actual screenwriter of the first movie died in 1999.
Which is a shame because while Tim Burton's direction and Vision coupled with Keaton's comedic timing made the film memorable, it was Michael Mcdowell's keen way of writing out of the box yet believable familial dialogue that helped tie it all together. Without it, Beetlejuice 2 just felt lacking. And the dialogue was certainly forgettable. Even without seeing Beetlejuice in years I can still remember a lot of the dialogue and their deliveries. I can't remember a single line from Beetlejuice 2 and I just saw that a couple months ago.

Honestly, it was a bad idea to begin with.
Most WB properties don't really fit this kind of crossover fighting game like Smash to begin with.

What I believe is the most likely to have happened: some suits saw that the game wasn't hitting absolute jumbo numbers that they wanted, so put in the demand for it get relaunched with more characters and on the shiniest new engine because newer engine == better and more cutting edge game. This then ran into two big problems

1) Even though it's all WB, the way they're structured and even just the simple whims of the people that actually give clearance on character appearances meant that the MVS team couldn't just use whomever they wanted. This is why we see stuff like Raven being the only one to be allowed to be depicted at all in Crossover Nexus--or in Multiversus. This reluctance to allow more characters and a focus on making potential money culminates in the face of the relaunch somehow being Jason--a character so mired in rights hell for years and which WB/New Line doesn't even own, only having first right of refusal for distribution on--all because despite EVERYTHING that makes him a potential hotbed, they still would come together for the F13 multimedia push.

2) Beyond the simple nightmare that would be trying to do an engine upgrade regardless, there's no doubt that another thing that influenced switching to UE5 is that it's basically the High Turnover Engine. It's easy to hire anyone in the industry of the worst skill because they'll ultimately still know how to slap together Something(TM) in the latest iteration of UE. That's what they train for, that's what management wants, so I wouldn't be surprised if any of the actual talent on the game was put through the wringer and supplemented with or outright replaced by people that were much worse, making the relaunch even more of a technical/functional nightmare

So relaunch times come and they got this barely functional game with none of the new characters they wanted, so the suits that caused this just go
