Why didn't DC sue?

Why didn't DC sue?

Because I'm pretty sure they know Tsuburaya is willing to spend more to win in court.
To DC this is just a specific alternate Superman villain in a pool of many.
To Tsuburaya, this is essentially their main man.
Plus, Tsuburaya beating Chaiyo in court after decades of misinformation probably makes the prospect of bringing them to court more intimidating.

I don't think you can sue from other countries that's why china gets away with bootlegs

Because they're even remotely the same character, they just have the same name?

Sue for what?

Tsuburaya Productions owns the trademark for Ultraman.

And the characters are too distinct for any copyright claims.

More like there'd be an entire forest of red tape to cut thru so most companies just don't bother

TM Class #16

This means that DC can't publish a book called Ultraman. Just like how it is with Captain Marvel.

Ironically the company behind Ultraman went through with a decades long court case against a Chinese company who was treating Ultraman as their own IP, and won, and even got the rights to everything Ultraman related the Chinese company made for all those years. But I'm pretty sure it's a one of a kind case.

Wasn’t the toku one first?

No, DC predates it by 2 years

Ultraman is from 1966.
Ultraman (DC) is from a story in 1964.

60s and 70s Japan gave no fucks and did not bother with copyright.

I'm not so sure they would bother until almost rhe 90s or so. Japan used to be about as bad as China with stealing IPs and making their own content without permission and not caring about court orders from the US for the longest time. Not until they started officially selling their content to the US in a wider scale in the 80s.

Why'd they cross over with Marvel anyway? Ultraman is heavily DC coded.

Marvel has cooler giant guys from Ultraman to fight.
Makluans
Frost Giants and other Giants around Asgard
Kree Sentinels
Giganto
all the big monsters from Monster Isle
Celestials
Galactus
he can pick on Aaron the rogue Water for being a nerd

Mole Man might be his main nemesis

Marvel also has Gozdilla and that monster island too, although it might be the same place as the FF/Mole Man one.

It's this. DC never registered a trademark for Ultraman because he was originally only intended to be a one-time character and they can't sue for copyright infringement because the characters are too different.

why sue over a evil universe Superman?

I feel like really common name combinations of

Adjective + Man

Are the hardest thing to copyright because it's so commonly used for nearly anything including plain ol news headlines and typical speech.

Superman might have a pass for being the first superhero and being too well known for too long. But just about anyone else is almost completely fair game.

you're crazy if you think you could get away with making a character named Bat Man with a bat motif no matter how different he is to the real Batman

Bat is not an adjective anon.

The two Ultraman have unrelated motifs though .

No shit retard, that was not even said above. OF COURSE Batman and Spider-Man are off limits since those are much more specific names that are not common vernacular. They are also not Adjectives so no aspect of what you said is relevant.

The comment was about terms like Super, Ultra, Mega, Amazing, common language terms that are used to describe anything and published everywhere in signs, ads, and articles.

Someone's a dropout neet

This is why you should be in school and not here in the middle of the day.

Hey look, it's Bat Man.

Not chinese, thai. The two companies used to work together and the thai outfit claimed they had licensing rights.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraman

They claimed ownership.

Outside japan.

With clearly fake and forged documents. Couldn't even get the names of some of the series right.

Oh, Plus he made his own stuff too under the supposed licence. That got handed over in the lawsuit.

Because Ultraman is Japanese and is a multi billion dollar empire, and DC is too busy making Harley Quinn fart comics.

I love Ultraman btw, binge watching Tiga as we speak. He fights Kaijus and shit and it's fucking badass.

Japan doesn't even do copyright.
...
Do they?

Because Marvel's the bigger name to partner with in TsuPro's international marketing campaign. Of course, nobody was really paying attention to the revisionist Ultraman books Marvel was putting out before the crossover was announced and delayed for like two years.

Of course, nobody was really paying attention to the revisionist Ultraman books Marvel was putting out

I was...I have every issue.

That would be really fun if Ultraman was Mole Man's main nemesis and always fought off every one of his monsters from Monster Island each time they moved off to go terrorize some place in the Pacific.

While the rest of the citizens on Ultra Star have been fighting the Makluans for centuries and keeping the rest of the universe safe.

Because Superman is outdated and irrelevant.
